In the world of television, a “pilot” episode is the one chance you have to make or break your show getting to air. If it doesn’t make the cut, it’s consigned to the film vault of history, never to be seen. It’s extremely unheard of for a franchise to get two pilots. Star Trek: The Original Series being one of those rare second chances.
Bafflingly it’s been assumed for years that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers had three pilots. As Tony Oliver, co-writer and developer of the Power Rangers pilot, first revealed at Power Morphicon in 2007, “the pilot episode, which turned into the first episode [“Day of the Dumpster”], they actually did three times.”
That means they shot three separate pilot episodes, right? Well, yes, but also no. It’s very complicated so we did the biggest deep dive research on the Power Rangers pilot ever. What we uncovered changes everything...

Scott Pilgrim is back, but not in the way anyone expected. The new Netflix animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is both a continuation of the “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” story and a complete recontextualization of what transpired, twisting and morphing the source material into something completely new. And who better to do it than the author responsible for creating “Scott Pilgrim” in the first place?
The anime “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is created by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, and while it begins similarly to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” a shocking twist at the end of Episode 1 soon takes this story in a different direction.
Edgar Wright, who co-wrote and directed the 2010 film adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” is involved in this new series as an executive producer and he also helped bring a big piece of the puzzle together: the cast.

Beast Morphers has a surprising comedic outing that makes consider the use of comedy in Power Rangers.

This Power Rangers Beast Morphers review contains spoilers.
Power Rangers Beast Morphers Episode 10
For a franchise that sometimes utilizes comedic side characters, Power Rangers doesn’t do overly comedic episodes as often as you think. This is assuming you don’t think Every episode of Power Rangers is hilarious by the sheer nature of its very concept, but if you’re reading this review you probably don’t chuckle at spandex wearing heroes or the hilarious amount of quick zooms in every episode of the show. Not that my co-worker laughed about those things as I watched an episode of Megaforce recently. Anyway, where was I?
Power Rangers and comedy. Since the very nature of the show can be seen as campy, Power Rangers doesn’t delve into overt comedy too often.

Several episodes of Power Rangers were almost filmed and we take an in-depth look at what they were about and why they didn't get made.
Power Rangers fans love a good abandoned plotline. For a series that's run for 25 years, of course there's a ton of ideas that never quite made it to screen. Pick any season and a hardcore fan will be able to tell you some incredible ideas that were planned but never made it to screen for one reason or another.
Rarely as fans do we get to see how these ideas would have played out. Most of the time ideas are just that, ideas. Idle speculation in the writer’s room that never made it to a script or planned arcs that had to be scrapped for budgetary reasons. At best all these are the topic of idle speculation by fans at conventions or footnotes on a wiki.

Before filming began, the most famous Power Ranger of all time had a very familiar name.
Tommy Oliver, a name that will be forever synonymous with Power Rangers. Beginning as the evil Green Ranger and wearing a variety of colors throughout the years, Tommy is without question the most popular Ranger of all time. It makes sense, you don’t go through wearing five Ranger suits and not pick up a lot of popularity. (Even if he didn't quite make it to the top of our Best Red Rangers list.)
But did you know Tommy Oliver wasn’t always going to be the Green Ranger’s name? Yes, that’s right; Kimberly could have been swooning after a man with a different name! What other name could have been used for Tommy though? It’s almost impossible to think about, Tommy Is the Green Ranger.
Well, thanks...

- While it’s only hinted at in the movie, there’s a strong implication that Jason and Kimberly have a thing for each other (the kiss scene in the trailer was ultimately cut). In the original series many fans have speculated that the producers were planning to put Jason and Kimberly together before Tommy showed up. Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.

For some reason, the future always seems to be a few decades away. 1984 was published in 1949. Terminator, which appropriately enough was released in 1984, set 1997 as the date for the apocalyptic “Judgement Day.” It seems strange now, after the turn of the Millennium (which happened rather uneventfully, with little more than an endless repeat of an old Prince song to mark its passing) to look back on things like Mad Max, Y2K, or the still older imaginings of such retro science fiction classics as Fahrenheit 451 or Soylent Green, but for decades, sci-fi imagineers alternated between the chills of gloom and doom and utopian fever.

In the world of giant mecha and space opera, it’s hard to find anything genuinely new. The genre is so defined, there are few trails left to blaze, and so a new series will most likely develop along one of two routes: it can either ride the coat tails an already established franchise, and present itself as a sequel/prequel/reversioning (the new — and Excellent — Evangelion titles are great example of this), or a show can strive to be a parody, preferably a really Good one, such as Galaxy Angel or Martian Successor Nadesico.
Vandread is in this latter category, and it doesn’t take long (approximately five seconds) to find out that this is space mecha action with a twist — forget aliens or angels, this is boys vs. girls! Men are from Mars, and Women are from Venus, but after decades in deep space, the two don’t...

Death doesn’t matter. Only revenge…
Back from the grave, and back from the oblivion so many Geneon titles were consigned to, Gungrave comes to us this week, courtesy of Funimation, in an all new complete collection. The series is from Yasuhiro Nightow, who was also the original creator of Trigun, and it explores many of the same themes, but with a much darker twist.
The beginning of the story is a jarringly bumpy ride, in which we meet Brandon Heat — or rather, the man who used to be Brandon Heat — until he died. He has since been brought back, and goes by a new name: Grave, as in “Beyond The Grave”. At least, that’s what the creepy old mad scientist tells us. Then Grave goes for a walk, some monsters show up, and the shooting begins.
From there, the series begins for the second time, and we get...
