Rascal Flatts have recorded a poignant tribute to Kenny Rogers, releasing their cover of the late singer’s “Through the Years” to streaming services on Friday. Country Music Hall of Fame member Rogers died March 20th of natural causes.
The trio of Gary LeVox, Joe Don Rooney, and Jay DeMarcus originally performed the song as part of the special “Cmt Giants Kenny Rogers: A Benefit for MusiCares,” which aired in early April. Their version is built off a soft, programmed drum rhythm and electric piano, with Gary LeVox singing it...

Gary LeMel, a longtime president of music at Warner Bros. Pictures whom the Los Angeles Times once called “the father of the compilation soundtrack album,” died July 6 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 80.
Film agent Richard Kraft called him “a true giant in the film music industry.” Songwriters Hall of Fame member Steve Dorff described LeMel as “an amazing music man (and) a true friend who made an indelible contribution to my career.” Tom Sturges, a former top exec at Universal Music and other publishing companies, called him “one of the great music execs in the film business, ever. He treated me with the greatest respect at every meeting, took every call and listened to every song and artist I pitched him. Truly one of a kind.”
LeMel’s wife of almost 47 years, Maddy LeMel, a visual artist, told Variety she was staggered by the amount of testimonials coming in.

Blake Shelton has added a new entry in his “Friends and Heroes” series, releasing an appropriately anxious cover of Eddie Rabbitt’s 1979 hit “Every Which Way but Loose.” It joins Shelton’s recent covers of Bobby Bare’s “Tequila Sheila” and George Jones’ “The King Is Gone.”
The Voice coach plays it straight with his version, preserving the double-tracked vocal passages and string flourishes of Rabbitt’s original as he puts himself in the shoes of a guy trying to work out some complicated feelings about a lover. Shelton brings...

Although they can seem formulaic, any major awards show, particularly one like the Songwriters Hall of Fame, is very difficult to pull off. While it’s a hallowed honor, the absolute apex for a songwriter — and the ceremony is a cross between the Grammy Awards and an annual family reunion for the tight-knit songwriting and music-publishing community — it faces many of the challenges that shows like the Grammys and the American Music Awards have, even though it isn’t televised. It needs a combination of starpower and underdog; it needs musical diversity; it needs the honorees to be present; it needs strong, suitable but also unexpected inductors. Sometimes they’re obvious: At Thursday night’s show, country superstar Alan Jackson was inducted by longtime producer Keith Stegall. Sometimes they’re not: Woody Guthrie’s daughter Nora inducted John Mellencamp. And it also needs a high percentage of inductees that are...

Eight set to run through 'Small Town'
Chris Pine, along with Shawn Christian, Bre Blair, John Hawkes, Robert Pine, Lin Shaye, Muse Watson and Brent Briscoe, are starring in Small Town Saturday Night. The indie film is from writer-director Ryan Craig.
Small Town centers on a country musician who discovers that the desire to follow his dream conflicts with his desire to be with the woman he loves while at the same time following the lives of townsfolk whose lives the two impact.
The fim is financed by Perfect Weekend and produced by Charlie Mason, Justin Moore-Lewy, Wonder Fortune Serra and Craig.
Craig broke into the business as an on-set assistant to Paula Wagner during the production of Without Limits and went on helm videos for country Western artists and worked with Phil Vassar.
The movie also will have a strong country feel to it, with Craig using his Nashville relationships to include country music star cameos. Original country music songs and the score will be composed by Steve Dorff.
