Julia Roberts has donned quite a few iconic roles among the likes of Anna Scott in Notting Hill and Erin Brockovich in Erin Brockovich. And yet, none of her fan-favorite roles is still regarded as incredibly successful and popular as Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman.
But what many people don’t know is that she nearly lost that role right after scoring it.

Although surprising it may seem, Roberts originally bagged the role when the film was under production with a different studio and a whole other storyline.
However, within a mere three days of her getting the chance to play Ward in the iconic rom-com from 1990, the actress pretty much temporarily lost the role — that was until one producer came to the rescue: Garry Marshall.

Chris Pine hopes he just found Luca Guadagnino’s next project: Disney’s “Princess Diaries 3.”
The actor and “Poolman” director proposed collaborating with the “Challengers” director for the third franchise installment during Entertainment Weekly’s Role Call Youtube series.
“‘Princess Diaries 3,’ where is it?’ Have you been reading my diary?” Pine quipped when revisiting his past roles. “I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything about it.”
However, Pine did have his own pitch for the film.
“You know, like, what it would be? It would be like a Luca Guadagnino film,” Pine said. “[If he] directs ‘Princess Diaries 3,’ now that is fucking fire.”
Of course, “Princess Diaries 3” would have to come after Guadagnino’s “Separate Rooms” with Lea Séydoux and Josh O’Connor. Guadagnino is also debuting “Queer” at Cannes 2024.

It’s been well over a year since news first broke that Disney was moving forward with “The Princess Diaries 3.” Anne Hathaway can’t reveal any details, but she did assure fans in a recent V magazine interview that development continues on the long-anticipated sequel, and the intention remains to get it off the ground.
“We’re in a good place,” Hathaway said. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
Hathaway would return as down-to-earth royal Mia Thermopolis in “The Princess Diaries 3.” It appears to be the sequel she is most interested in seeing through, as she doesn’t see a feasible way to bring another one of her popular classics, “The Devil Wears Prada,” back to life.
“Probably not,” Hathaway answered when asked about making a “Prada” sequel. “We all love each other and if somebody could...

Disney announced a third feature installment with a script being penned by Aadrita Mukerji (“Supergirl”), with original “Princess Diaries” veteran Debra Martin Chase set to produce and “The Other Woman” screenwriter Melissa Stack executive producing. The third film will serve as a continuation of the original film series as a sequel to the 2001 and 2004 movies starring Hathaway and Julie Andrews. Drew Barrymore recalls filming Never Been Kissed and being asked to “tone it down” because her character, Josie Grossie, was deemed “too unattractive.”
In a recent episode of her talk show The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress talked about her experience while filming the 1999 romantic comedy, the first one from her production company Flower Films.
“At that time, people were very weary of actors being producers,” Barrymore told her talk show guests Christine Taylor and David Lascher. “A lot of it wasn’t necessarily working, and it didn’t mean because you were an actor, you knew how to produce the film. And it was about the economics. So if you didn’t make the film work, and you produced it as an actor, you are likely to not be able to do it again.”

In 2001, Anne Hathaway starred as Mia Thermopolis, heir to the throne and Princess of Genovia, in the American coming-of-age teen comedy film The Princess Diaries.
Her grandmother in the film, reigning Queen of Genovia Clarisse Renaldi, was played by Dame Julie Andrews.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon is still No. 1 on Netflix.
In its first full week on the streamer, the first part of Snyder’s science-fiction epic racked up 34M views, making it first among the English-language film list from December 25 to 31 — and the most-watched title on the streamer. Add that to the 29M views that the film managed in its debut weekend, and Rebel Moon currently stands at around 63M views for 10 days of availability.
It’ll need to nearly triple that viewership in the next 80 or so days in order to make it among Netflix’s most popular films of all time. Rebel Moon is off to a fine start, though it’s likely the streamer was hoping for a stronger full week of viewership, considering there’s another installment and a director’s cut coming down the pipeline. For reference, Extraction 2, which is currently No. 10 on Netflix’s most popular film list,...

Stardom came quickly for Anne Hathaway when she first began her career. After one season on an unsuccessful sitcom, Hathaway found herself cast as the star of Garry Marshall’s film “The Princess Diaries.” It was kind of a case of art imitating life since in the film a young high school girl finds out she is really a princess and is launched into the public eye.
The same thing pretty much happened to Hathaway. The acting bug was in her system since after all she was named after the wife of William Shakespeare and her mother was a former actress who gave up her career to raise a family. In one great coincidence, her mom’s last role before motherhood was in a national touring company of “Les Misérables.” In that production she was an understudy for the role of Fantine, the doomed factory worker turned prostitute who sings...

Richard Moll, the fun-loving actor who portrayed the towering and tenderhearted bailiff Aristotle Nostradamus “Bull” Shannon on all nine seasons of the popular NBC sitcom Night Court during its original run, has died. He was 80.
Moll died peacefully Thursday at his home in Big Bear Lake, California, his publicist announced.
Suitable for his 6-foot-8 frame, Moll played an abominable snowman alongside Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach in the comedy feature Caveman (1981), and he was a scary, decomposing Vietnam veteran in the horror film House (1986).
Moll also did lots of voiceover work, with a regular gig as the immortal bodyguard Norman on the syndicated series Mighty Max and turns as Harvey Dent/Two-Face for three Batman cartoons.
Moll had a shaved head — he did that to play the warrior Hurok in the sci-fi film Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983) — when he auditioned for the role of Shannon on Night Court, created by Reinhold Weege.

Actor Anne Hathaway got one of her breakthrough roles starring in the hit film The Princess Diaries. But playing a princess wasn’t initially what Hathaway had in mind for her career. So to get through the film, she focused on deeper aspects of her character.

Hathaway has always looked back at her time in The Princess Diaries fondly. Initially, there were other young actors being seen for the role.
“I was cleaning out my garage recently and found the master list of who we auditioned for Mia. Scarlett Johansson was on the list, January Jones. We saw everybody,” producer Debra Martin Chase once said in an interview with Cosmopolitan.
But by the time Hathaway tested for the role, everyone agreed that she was perfect for the movie’s central character.

Screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for his scripts to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Melvin and Howard” and was among a select group of film scribes including Robert Towne and William Goldman considered to be among that generation’s best, died Tuesday in Helendale, Calif., his son-in-law, director Todd Field, confirmed to the New York Times. He was 90.
Goldman was also Oscar nominated for 1993’s “Scent of a Woman.”
The 1976 Oscar he shared with Lawrence Hauben for co-adapting Ken Kesey’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was a particularly impressive achievement considering that “Cuckoo’s Nest” represented only Goldman’s second screenplay and the first to be produced. The win for adapted screenplay was part of a sweep for the film that also included victories for best picture, director, actor and actress. Molly Ringwald is getting candid about finding her way in Hollywood when she was younger, and why she turned down an iconic role in Pretty Woman.
Early in her career, Ringwald was making her name as the new “It” girl with films like The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles, but when she wanted to branch out, she found it difficult.
“I didn’t really feel like darker roles were available to me,” she explained to The Guardian in a recent interview. “The ones that I wanted to do, I didn’t get. I was too young for certain roles. I was at this weird in-between stage.”
As she tried to navigate the industry and figure out what projects suited her best, she even turned down some roles, including Julia Roberts’ Vivian Ward. Ringwald told the outlet that the while the Erin Brockovich actress “was wonderful” in the hit 1990 rom-com,...

While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.
A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.

Los Angeles native Karina Longworth has long ridden the swells of writing about Hollywood, whether as a cofounder of film blog Cinematical and contributor to Spout, critic and film editor at LA Weekly, author, or creator of the popular nine-year-old “You Must Remember This” podcast. Jackie Gleason never won an Emmy. Neither did Ed Sullivan. Or Andy Griffith. Or Fred Rogers. Or “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry. Or “Rocky & Bullwinkle” genius Jay Ward. Bob Newhart’s sole Emmy win was as a guest actor on “The Big Bang Theory” in 2013.
Yes, the 74 years of Emmy history are chock full of surprises spanning both winners and non-winners. That extends to the Emmy’s Governors Award as well. In 2001, Disney’s adaptation of Meg Cabot’s best-selling book The Princess Diaries took the world by storm. The film was a coming-of-age story of Mia Thermopolis, an awkward teenage girl who discovers she’s the heir to the Genovian throne. As it turns out, Julie Andrews’ casting as Mia’s grandmother, Clarisse Renaldi, led to a significant change from the book.

When Garry Marshall signed on to direct The Princess Diaries, he knew he needed a big-name star to play the queen regent of Genovia, Clarisse. The character was an integral part of the story, and he needed someone who could bring the necessary gravitas and elegance to the role. That’s when Andrews came on board.

Before Seinfeld, Jason Alexander had another major claim to fame. He was in the blockbuster movie Pretty Woman. Alexander played Richard Gere’s lawyer. If you didn’t get that he’s sleazy by this point in the movie, he famously slaps Julia Roberts. When it came to the Seinfeld audition, Alexander thought he would lose the role of George Costanza to another Pretty Woman star.

Cindy Williams, best known for starring opposite Penny Marshall on “Laverne & Shirley” for seven of eight seasons, has died at the age of 75. No cause was given, but an assistant for Williams told the New York Times the actress died “peacefully” after a brief illness.
While Williams appeared in a number of projects, “Laverne & Shirley” was seismic in her career. The series was nominated for just one Emmy during its entire run—for Best Costume Design in 1979—but its hold on pop culture was recognized even if it failed to win prestigious awards. The whole nation, for a time, knew the difference between a schlemiel and a schlimazel.
Williams, born in Los Angeles, began her career in television commercials, landing gigs for Foster Grant sunglasses and Twa. Early film work included a role in the Jack Nicholson-directed “Drive, He Said,” and George Cukor’s “Travels With My Aunt.

Anne Hathaway is thrilled with fan response over the third installment of The Princess Diaries saga. The much-anticipated film has been years in the making and Hathaway is sharing her thoughts on the development process.

Julie Andrews has bad news for any “Princess Diaries” fan hoping that news of a third installment means the return of Queen Clarisse to the big screen. During a recent interview with Access Hollywood, the acting icon cast doubt on returning to the beloved Disney franchise.
“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,” Andrews said of starring in “The Princess Diaries 3.”
“It was talked about very shortly after [“Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”] came out, but it’s now how many years since then?” Andrews continued. “And I am that much older and Annie the princess, our queen, is so much older. And I am not sure whether it would float or run.”
Variety confirmed in November that Disney was developing a third installment in “The Princess Diaries” franchise with screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji. Andrews starred in the first movies opposite Anne Hathaway, but neither actors’ involvement in a third...

Hollywood star Julie Andrews, who played Clarisse Renaldi, the Queen regent of Genovia in ‘The Princess Diaries 3’, said that her participation in the new film might not happen. “I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,” Andrews told Access Hollywood.
“It was talked about very shortly after (the second sequel) came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run,” reports ‘Deadline’.
The Princess Diaries originally came out in 2001 with Garry Marshall directing Andrews and Anne Hathway. The coming-of-age comedy was based on the popular Meg Cabot novel series with Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, at the center of the story.
Mia is a teenager from San Francisco who discovers that she is the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia.
