Although Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror film "The Shining" is frequently cited as one of the scariest films of all time, it's widely known that Stephen King — who wrote the 1977 novel on which it's based — hates it. Kubrick famously altered several details of King's book, and the author felt that the changes were arbitrary at best and insulting at worst. King wrote his story as the tale of an ordinary man who was gradually driven to madness. King expressed interest in gentler actors like Martin Sheen or Michael Moriarty for the role of Jack Torrance, feeling they would be sympathetic immediately. Kubrick, however, cast Jack Nicholson in the role, and King felt that Nicholson was already unstable from the jump. With Nicholson, it wasn't a tale of a sane man going insane, but an already-insane man cracking open.

The filmmakers behind prominent documentaries on casting directors and the #MeToo movement have set their sights on another Hollywood subject: the evolution of the performers’ union SAG-AFTRA.
Director-producer Tom Donahue and producer Ilan Arboleda are working on a film about the transformation of the labor organization union between 2008, when the Writers Guild of America struck film and television studios and the Screen Actors Guild considered (but ultimately did not realize) their own work stoppage, and 2024, in the aftermath of the union’s landmark 118-day actors’ strike. The film will represent the culmination of interviews that have spanned a decade conducted by the filmmakers, whose project will additionally cover the union’s history and its longtime fight to create a middle class of actors, they shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

Though it’s something of a backhanded paean to its eponymous city in question, the most enjoyable element to “Lost & Found in Cleveland” is its locations, locations, locations — cinematographer Davon Slininger’s widescreen images provide an appealing selective tour of a burg the film presents as quaintly lagging well behind the times. Otherwise, this slick if uninspired first feature for actors turned writer-directors Marisa Guterman and Keith Gerchak offers a pleasant-enough ensemble seriocomedy that straddles the terrains of Richard Curtis and Christopher Guest, without approaching either’s high points. The Newport Beach Fest world premiere’s familiar faces and story beats seem best suited to home viewing.
An opening montage to the retro pop of Bobby Darin singing “Artificial Flowers” — an incongruously brassy, “Mack the Knife”-like arrangement of a depressing slum-tragedy lyric from 1960 Broadway musical “Tenderloin” — introduces the characters, as well as a sense that this midwestern metropolis’ growth stalled some decades ago.

In 1999, Orange County natives Gregg Schwenk and Todd Quartararo were working in the corporate sector but shared a love for cinema and producing events. They looked around their seaside locale and saw potential. “A beautiful coastal setting, surrounded by a vibrant business community and enthusiastic filmgoers, combined with our proximity to the film industry epicenter made Newport Beach the ideal place to launch an international film festival and build a world class event,” says Schwenk.
From those humble beginnings, Schwenk became the founder and CEO of the Newport Beach Film Festival, which has since become an internationally recognized event. This year, Newport celebrates its 25th anniversary during its Oct. 17-24 run. It’s also become a stop along the awards campaign trail for Oscar hopefuls and a way to celebrate some of the biggest names in the industry. Conceived by Barbara Pyle and media mogul Ted Turner, Captain Planet was an ecological hero way ahead of his time. The animated series ran for years with some nifty design work by Neal Adams and his Continuity Associates. Each episode featured an adventure and a lesson (of course). It endeared itself to a generation of viewers and remained an enduring figure from the 1990s.
Now, Warner Home Entertainment has released Captain Planet the Complete Franchise, with 41 hours and 31 minutes of environmental goodness. For silly legal reasons, the show has two titles evenly split among its six seasons: Captain Planet and the Planeteers (animated by Dic) and The New Adventures of Captain Planet (animated by Hanna-Barbera) for the final three seasons.

The “West Wing” cast is reuniting once again.
Stars of the hit political drama will reunite on Tuesday, Oct. 15, a month after they appeared on stage together at the Emmy Awards and at the White House with creator Aaron Sorkin and President Joe Biden.
Martin Sheen, Bradley Whitford, Richard Schiff, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney and Mary McCormack will appear virtually with Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senator Bob Casey on Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. “for a night of games, performances, and conversation about the stakes of this election.”
Casey is seeking a fourth Senate term in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state in the 2024 election, against Republican David McCormick.
“This group is coming together to support Bob Casey’s campaign because they know he’s facing the toughest fight of his career. If Bob loses Pennsylvania, Democrats have no chance of winning the Senate,” the Casey for U.S. Senate campaign said in the invitation.

Argentina president Javier Milei has been accused of plagiarizing The West Wing during a recent speech at the United Nations, making him the latest in a surprisingly long list of real-life politicians who have stole material from the fictional White House drama.
The leftist-hating, Trump-loving libertarian Milei’s speech to the Un general assembly took place on September 24, but it wasn’t until recent days that the Argentinean press realized that much of what the president said was lifted word-for-word from a speech made by The West Wing’s President...

Stephen King isn’t just an author by this point: He’s an institution, a legacy of classic horror stories that capture our imaginations, fuel our nightmares, and speak — when he’s at his best — to our shared experiences as flawed, emotional beings. The best King stories scare so many of us that we all feel connected, and even the worst are usually pretty fun.
King’s books and short stories quickly became hit movies, many of them celebrated in their time, and some flopped so hard that hardly anybody remembers them. Cataloguing every adaptation might be a fool’s errand, so we made some tough choices and decided to focus only on his theatrical releases.
And even then, there are so many King adaptations that it gets tricky. The sequels to King’s work rarely have anything to do with the source material, so they’re all disqualified. We...

Opening for Johnny Cash at a venue outside Philadelphia in 1995, a concert sponsored by a local country station, Kris Kristofferson was in friendly territory. But not for long. During the show, he dedicated a song to Mumia Abu-Jamal, the Black journalist and former Black Panther who’d been convicted of a 1981 killing of a white police officer in Philadelphia and sentenced to death. The crowd began booing, goaded on further by Kristofferson comparing Abu-Jamal to Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, and Gandhi. The Philadelphia Daily News...

Tom Cruise is blessed with a skillset unlike any other. The actor’s career since the early 80s has only ever been on the rise, without fail, and Cruise has only become more unstoppable with age. The global fascination that comes with his name is indicative of his status as one of the last true movie stars and it is because of that star persona that his career has turned into a timeless legacy.

In today’s troubled political times, “The West Wing” feels even more quaint and nostalgic than it did when it premiered 25 years ago, which means we need it now more than ever. An idealized vision of a Presidential administration functioning at its very best despite Washington’s many complications, the Aaron Sorkin-created series captivated audiences with its whip-smart dialogue and dense storytelling. In honor of its 25th anniversary, let’s take a look back at 20 of its greatest episodes, ranked worst to best.
“The West Wing” centered on the ins and outs of a White House staff, with Martin Sheen front and center as the noble, dedicated President Jed Bartlet. There’s Chief of Staff Leo McGarry (John Spencer), Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), Communications Director Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff), Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Press Secretary C.J. On September 20, creator Aaron Sorkin, executive producer and director Thomas Schlamme, and some of the cast of “The West Wing,” including the show’s fictional president, Martin Sheen, celebrated the 25th anniversary of their beloved political TV series with a special event at The White House hosted by the First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden. It was part of a reunion lap the show has been having the last few months, both in relation to the upcoming election and the release of “What’s Next: A Backstage Pass to ‘The West Wing'” by co-stars of the show Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack. In reminiscing about the show in a recent interview with The New York Times, Sorkin shared that the timetable for when the show was supposed to be made had to be shifted as a result of a real-life political scandal.

Image Source: Warner Bros American politics has always been a fascinating subject for TV and film viewers, from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington to All the President’s Men to Lincoln. And it was 25 years ago that The West Wing premiered on NBC, featuring creator/writer Aaron Sorkin’s highly stylized portrayal of the White House at work, with the focus originally not on the President himself, but on the staffers that keep the presidency functioning. In any administration, the most important staffer is usually the Chief of Staff, who works directly with both the President and his top aides, making sure that policies and instructions are being followed correctly. It’s a crucial job, and on The West Wing, that role was filled by the late John Spencer, who played Leo McGarry. When Spencer was hired for the job, he once told us, Sorkin gave him a little bit...

Aaron Sorkin was clearly moved on Friday during his visit to the White House to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “The West Wing” — so much so that it has him pondering a revival of the critically adored political drama.
“If I had an idea, sure,” Sorkin told Variety afterward. “I didn’t think about it seriously, frankly, until today… We’ll see what happens when I wake up tomorrow. But, if you’re asking me now, this is how I feel.”
Sorkin, director/exec producer Thomas Schlamme and stars Martin Sheen, Richard Schiff, Dulé Hill, Janel Moloney, Emily Procter, Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack met with President Joe Biden in the map room, and then were given a personal tour of the building. (President Biden then left for meetings in Delaware.) Later, First Lady Jill Biden held a formal Rose Garden ceremony for the show, held right outside the real-life West Wing and Oval Office.

Martin Sheen, who played Bartlet, thanked the first lady for getting the opportunity “to morph once again into the wonderful character that changed my life and lot of the others as well.” He then made a soaring statement from the Rose Garden steps, reiterating an Irish story themed to the idea of “something worth fighting for.”

Full disclosure, this writer has rewatched the entirety of NBC’s landmark political drama “The West Wing,” all seven seasons/156 episodes, roughly 10 times. This may read as a lot for some, but considering the show’s been around 25 years come September 22, it’s just a drop in the bucket compared to the viewership habits of more die-hard fans. According to Nielsen, since being dropped on Max in 2020, the series has clocked 212 million viewing hours, but not amongst those tuning in is the show’s creator, Aaron Sorkin.

“It’s hard to believe that just 25 years ago, Aaron and the writers actually had to use their imaginations to create interesting plotlines for The West Wing,” Janney quipped. Schiff added, “Unlike today, where storylines can be plucked right off the news — storylines that writers would have deemed a bit far-fetched, if not utterly ridiculous, 25 years ago.”

The 2024 Emmy Awards were filled with several memorable moments throughout the night on Sunday, from historical wins and powerful speeches to heartfelt cast reunions and political jokes. Some of them included Anna Sawai, Liza Colón-Zayas and Hiroyuki Sanada making history with their wins; Candice Bergen making a catty J.D. Vance joke; and The West Wing, Happy Days and Saturday Night Live casts reuniting onstage. Below, The Hollywood Reporter highlights some of the night’s unforgettable moments.
John Leguizamo Celebrates Diverse Emmy Nominees in Powerful Speech
John Leguizamo is “almost happy and certainly less angry” with the nominees for the 2024 Emmys. When taking the stage during Sunday night’s show, the Emmy-winning actor was quick to point out, “I’m one of Hollywood’s Dei hires. That’s right, Dei. The ‘D’ is for diligence, the ‘E’ is for excellence, the ‘I’ is for imagination. And everyone in this room tonight...

It was a tame throwback Sunday at the Emmy Awards tonight with blasts from the past taking center stage in a show seemingly longing for another era.
Besides the unexpected and well deserved Best Comedy win for Hacks, the show was full of predictable trophies for FX’s Shōgun and The Bear and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. Along with anticipated victories for True Detective: Night Country’s Jodie Foster, The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki and Hacks’ Jean Smart, Sunday’s nostalgia-heavy, nearly three-hour 76th Primetime Emmy Awards was punctuated by a crowd-pleasing West Wing 25th anniversary reunion, featuring Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff and Dulé Hill.
Even so, there was not much new to be said there on this small screen display of back to the future.
“Our political landscape has shifted dramatically in recent years,” stated Moloney, the show’s Donna Moss, “but two things...

“The West Wing” cast members reunited on stage at the Emmys Sunday night in honor of the show’s 25th anniversary next week.
Stars Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Dulé Hill, Janel Moloney and Richard Schiff were all on stage during the ceremony to present the award for best drama series.
Although it was a brief segment, the cast appeared on a replica of the set. They also poked fun at the modern political climate.

Who better to present Outstanding Drama Series than the cast of a show that has won the category multiple times? Stars of The West Wing — which, during its seven-season run from 1999 to 2006, won 26 Emmys including Outstanding Drama Series in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 — reunited on the 2024 Emmys stage to not only present the award but also celebrate its 25th anniversary. Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Janel Moloney, and Dulé Hill reunited on stage, aptly looking just like the Oval Office in the White House. Sheen was appropriately sitting behind the desk when they were introduced. “From 1999 to 2006, I had the honor of playing the President of the United States on an extraordinary series created by Aaron Sorkin and produced by John Wells,” Sheen said, with Hill following up with, “The name of that series, The West Wing, and we all had the honor of serving in your administration.” As Janney pointed out,...

A night of nostalgia, a Baby Reindeer sweep and an incredible launching pad for the upcoming seasons of The Bear and Shōgun made up the 76th annual Primetime Emmys on Sunday.
While the Family Levy didn’t exactly rock the L.A.’s Peacock Theater as the first father-and-son hosts, breakout moments came courtesy of TV’s old guard and Jodie Foster’s first Emmy win.
Here are some of the great moments, surprises and snubs from tonight’s telecast on ABC.
Great moment when Eugene Levy made a crack about The Bear‘s record wins in the comedy category and how, well, it’s hardly a knee-slapping series. “In the true spirit of The Bear we will not be making any jokes.”

For the second time this year, Hollywood gathered to honor TV’s biggest stars.
After the 2023 ceremony was delayed to January 2024 by last year’s Hollywood strikes, it’s only been eight months since TV’s biggest stars gathered at Los Angeles’ LA Live Peacock Theatre to announce the Emmy winners. Like months ago, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach once again won lead actor and supporting actor in a comedy, and co-star Colón-Zayas also won her first Emmy in the supporting actress race. “Hacks” star Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy, and in the biggest surprise of the night, HBO’s “Hacks” won outstanding comedy over “The Bear,” which many believed to be the frontrunner.
“The Bear” broke its own record of 10 comedy wins for a single season, which it achieved last year, with its 11 trophies on Sunday, including directing for Christopher Storer. FX...

Exclusive: The White House is planning an event next week to mark the 25th anniversary of The West Wing, with President Joe Biden marking the occasion with cast and creators, according to sources familiar with the plans.
The event is scheduled for Sept. 20, which is two days before the debut anniversary. The Aaron Sorkin series, produced by Warner Bros. Television, premiered on NBC on Sept. 22, 1999, and went on to run for seven seasons. It also proved to be an inspiration to many who went into politics, with its idealistic depiction of what politics can be.
Martin Sheen, who played President Josiah Bartlet on the series, had a brief meeting with Biden at the White House last month. Sheen was with cast members Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack, authors of the recently published What’s Next: A Backstage Pass to The West Wing, Its Cast And Crew And Its Enduring Legacy Of Service.

It is a deceptively simple premise for a two-hour feature film. A married couple who had planned their retirement in a B&b are, due to dire financial circumstances and bum luck, forced out of their home at a point that is, on the surface at least, completely devastating. With their kids now off at school, they make the decision to pack up what they can in their backpacks and take off on the Salt Path, a 630-mile stretch from Dorset to Somerset on the Southwestern English Coast. To make matters worse, the husband has just been diagnosed with a terminal neurodegenerative disease, but they are bound and determined to complete this adventure, perhaps the last of their lives because they have no other choice.
Oh, and it is a 100% true story.
Exquisitely directed by four-time Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott with a screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (She Said) based on Raynor Winn’s 2018 memoir, The Salt Path is an inspiring story of love and resilience in a situation that might otherwise break most people, especially a couple entering their later years with little hope against an unforgiving system. This is certainly not the first film based on someone setting out on an ambitious walk for various personal reasons. Martin Sheen starred as a man tackling El Camino de Santiago trail in 2010’s spiritual The Way; Reese Witherspoon played the depressed Cheryl Strayed in Wild, the 2014 true story of her 1100-mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail; and Mark Wahlberg starred in another true story, 2020’s Joe Bell, about a father who walks across America in protest of the bullying of his son.
All of these films, and other similar stories of determination against all odds, were admirable attempts but not always successful movies as sometimes dramatizing the journey can be a little repetitive. Where Elliott succeeds with a fine Lenkiewicz template, is getting us instantly engaged in the travails of Ray (Gillian Anderson) and Moth (Jason Isaacs), a couple who could be you or me as life hits them hard in the gut and the Salt Path becomes somehow a cure, a spiritual redemption however temporary, to set them on a new path (literally and figuratively) in life. Is it an adventure? Is it insanity or an existential mid-life crisis? In some ways, it is reminiscent of the premise of John Cheever’s The Swimmer and its film adaptation, in which Burt Lancaster swam from one neighbor’s pool to another, encountering various people along the way. But moreover, it is the tale of these two born to come together to experience life together, no matter how hard that gets.
After unreasonably being evicted from their B&b, having their bank account dried up due to legal expenses and losing their farm, this likable couple decides to fullfil a dream and live off the land as it were by embarking with just chump change on an ambitious walk covering 630 breathtaking miles, even as Moth has had a pretty devastating diagnosis. This might stop most people in their tracks, but in this case only sets this couple off in theirs.
The story from this point on becomes episodic as they make their way, stopping at various points and towns, interacting with the locals and relatives, bleeding an Atm dry just for enough to get food, and even for Ray getting a job shearing sheep. Nothing hugely life-threatening happens along the way, no sudden tidal wave or earthquakes, none of the usual movie tropes, but rather a love story of two people making the most of where life has brought them to this point. Of course to make this work, you need actors of the extraordinary grace and talent of Anderson and Isaacs who are entirely believable as this pair staring down nature as an antidote to the cards life has dealt. Both are excellent in essentially a two-hander, although they get support along the way from various people they meet or stay with.
With Helene Louvart’s excellent cinematography a real plus, The Salt Path is a cinematic journey worth taking. It had its world premiere Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival. Producers are Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley, Lloyd Levin and Beatriz Levin.

Get ready for more nostalgia on Sunday’s 76th Emmy Awards — the second one this year, we keep reminding you — but with a twist. Unlike the 75th ceremony in January, which focused on cast reunions, this time the producers are mashing together iconic stars and their characters, past and present.
That means famous TV moms like Meredith Baxter (“Family Ties”), cops like Jimmy Smits (“NYPD Blue”), lawyers like Gina Torres (“Suits”), doctors like Zach Braff (“Scrubs”), TV villains like Giancarlo Esposito (“Breaking Bad”) and more. (And that’s just some of the names that have already been confirmed to present).
“The response to January was incredible, and we felt like people really connected to the nostalgia,” said Dionne Harmon, who executive produces for Jesse Collins Entertainment along with Collins and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay. “So, we wanted to figure out a way to bring that nostalgia to the show on Sunday without doing the exact same thing.

When I interviewed Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego and president and CEO Maury McIntyre on Emmy nomination day, they indicated that despite low ratings for the star-studded 75th Emmys on Fox (delayed four months to January of this year), they were thrilled with its production and the nostalgia factor you probably could expect for such a major milestone year.
The pair indicated reunions and nostalgia for TV’s past would be returning to ABC’s turn at broadcasting Sunday’s Primetime Emmys, and just their luck — that network is battling DirecTV in a carriage dispute, and there is a possibility DirecTV customers won’t see the show and likely wins for Disney’s collection of networks. Those notably include FX, which picked up 21 Creative Arts Emmys over the weekend just for Shōgun and The Bear (seven) in their respective Drama Series and Comedy Series categories.

It’s not often I’d be talking about Agatha Christie, Renny Harlin, Val Kimer and LL Cool J in the same breath, but thanks to the world of Tinseltown magic, here we are! And, before you’re mis-led into thinking this video is about the great Netflix show of the same name, let me just set the record straight. This ain’t that one folks. Nope, the movie we’re focusing on today somehow manages to blend the classic British literary world of Agatha Christie with LL Cool J spitting out lines like. That’s right gore-hounds, twenty years ago director Renny Harlin was best known for action classics, pirate movies, dangling Sylvester Stallone from great heights and giant sharks; way before the likes of The Meg and more recently, Under Paris. Then, an intriguing project came his way that would blend the worlds of Agatha Christie and gangster rappers,...

Is there anything more soul-stirring than the sweet symphony of success? It’s a sentiment Matt Damon knows all too well. This actor knows that the road to greatness isn’t always draped in rose petals. Despite his stellar portrayal of the conflicted mob mole, Colin Sullivan, in Martin Scorsese’s 2006 crime thriller The Departed, fortune didn’t exactly roll out the red carpet for Damon when it came to awards season.

Ironically, while the film snagged a bevy of accolades, Damon’s heavyweight performance was waved off by major awards shows. Isn’t it a head-scratcher that the actor, often the human embodiment of ‘critical acclaim’, found himself overlooked? It was as if the awards folks were playing a game of hide and seek with his accolades!

Production on the third and final season of Good Omens has been underway in Scotland, but Deadline reports that it’s been put on pause. Uh oh. The reason for the pause isn’t clear, but Deadline has heard that there are “discussions about possible production changes.” It’s speculated that this pause is related to the sexual assault allegations made against Good Omens co-creator Neil Gaiman by several women earlier this summer.
The allegations were made in a podcast series released by Tortoise Media titled Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman. Some of the allegations go back decades, with the woman accusing Gaiman of “rough, degrading” sex that was not always consensual. Gaiman has denied the allegations, saying he was “disturbed” by them. Disney also paused a feature film adaptation of Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book earlier this week.

The Shining is often hailed as one of the best works in the horror genre. The Stephen King adaptation’s unconventional approach and Jack Nicholson’s menacing performance make it iconic among horror film fans. However, sadly, the 1980 film never found a fan in the author.

Stephen King has always been vocal against Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation. The film had some considerable deviations from the original novel, disappointing the author. Although the film was even selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2018 for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance, King never supported it.

Stanley Kubrick‘s The Shining had some notable differences from the iconic Stephen King novel. According to King, these changes were absolutely unnecessary and affected the depth of the story.
