Sherry Lansing, Mayim Bialik, Debra Messing, David Mamet, Gene Simmons, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne and Scooter Braun are among the high-profile entertainment industry figures who have added their names to a counter-petition organized by the Creative Community for Peace in response to a letter published earlier this week calling for a boycott of “Israeli cultural institutions that are complicit or have remained silent observers of the overwhelming oppression of Palestinians.”
The initial open letter, which refers to the Israel-Gaza conflict as a “genocide,” counts as its signatories more than 1,000 writers including Normal People author Sally Rooney, Naomi Klein, Rachel Kushner, Annie Ernaux, Percival Everett and Jonathan Lethem.
The counter-petition “reject[s] the calls to boycott Israel and Jewish writers, publishers, authors, book festivals and literary agencies, along with those who support, work with, or platform them” and argues that “the instincts and motivations behind cultural boycotts, in practice and throughout history,...

It was a few years in the making, but Second Sight Films recently sent their 4K and Blu-ray release of the 1986 classic The Hitcher out into the world, and you can pick up a copy of the 4K release at This Link. To celebrate this release, The Guardian got in contact with The Hitcher‘s director Robert Harmon and the film’s star C. Thomas Howell – and found that they both had some interesting things to say about Rutger Hauer’s contribution to the film and his approach to playing the homicidal John Ryder.
Directed by Harmon from a screenplay by Eric Red, The Hitcher has the following synopsis: While transporting a car from Chicago to San Diego, Jim Halsey picks up a hitchhiker named John Ryder, who claims to be a serial killer. After a daring escape, Jim hopes to never see Ryder again. But when he witnesses the hitchhiker murdering an entire family,...

Based on her creative output over the last few years, it's genuinely astonishing that actress Ariana Greenblatt isn't even old enough to legally order a drink yet. Born in August 2007 in New York City to an industry family, Greenblatt booked her first big role in 2016 thanks to the Disney Channel original series "Stuck in the Middle," which cast her as Daphne Diaz — the youngest of seven kids, who still loves playing with dolls but is also pretty vindictive for such a little kid.
After making her film debut in a small supporting role in "A Bad Moms Christmas" in 2017, Greenblatt's career really took off. So, what are her best projects so far? Bear in mind that Greenblatt is still early in her career, and based on her work thus far, her future is incredibly bright. Still, she's made some pretty solid stuff since 2017, including some absolutely enormous blockbusters. Here are her five best roles,...

John Ryder may have wanted Jim to stop him, but you’re going to have a hard time stopping any fan from picking up the upcoming 4K Blu-ray of The Hitcher. Surprisingly, the movie has never been available on a Region 1 Blu-ray, but thankfully Warner Bros. is gassing up for exactly that.
As per The Digital Bits, Warner Bros. will release The Hitcher – which stars Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell and Jennifer Jason Leigh – on October 22nd.
Here is the official write-up: “In this 1986 cult classic, director Robert Harmon thrills the viewer with the story of young Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell), who stops on the highway to pick up a hitchhiker, not knowing that by doing so, he opens the door to terrible evil. The mysterious hitcher, unforgettably portrayed by Rutger Hauer, is a relentless slaughterer, preying on those who invite him into their lives. Somewhat dismissed at the time of its original release,...

Kathy Bates has announced she's retiring after Matlock, so here's a look at the highlights of an incredible career!
CBS had announced Matlock in 2023, a reboot of the 1980s NBC series starring Andy Griffith as a lawyer whose charming manner hides his legal brilliance defending people accused of murder. The new version has Kathy Bates as Madeline "Matty" Matlock, a veteran attorney returning to work for a major firm. She uses her supposed scatterbrained persona and age to make sure she's underestimated before pulling off a win.
The 2023 Hollywood strikes delayed the show, but it is ready to premiere this September. Before that happens, Bates announced that she would be retiring after this series, no matter how long it runs.
This is my last dance. It becomes my life. Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent. Because I can't hold it back, and I just want my life. Everything I've prayed for,...

2019 was a great year for Scarlett Johansson. Apart from being part of the phenomenal Avengers: Endgame, which was the highest-grossing film of all time for a while, she received her first and second Oscar nominations. The actress headlined Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama Marriage Story, for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
While the same year she also got the nod for Best Supporting Actress in Jojo Rabbit, her performance as Nicole Barber, an actress going through a divorce, has many wondering how she missed the win. The film also starred Adam Driver, who was nominated for Best Actor, and Laura Dern, who beat Johansson for Best Supporting Actress.

However, the actor also had a minor yet memorable role in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. Exclusive: David Rysdahl (Fargo) has been tapped to star opposite Lily Sullivan in SOULM8TE, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse’s new film out of the M3GAN universe, Deadline has learned.
In the film from director Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother), Rysdahl plays a man who acquires an Artificially Intelligent android (Sullivan) to help him cope with the recent loss of his deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, the man inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.
Dolan is directing after rewriting the original draft from Rafael Jordan (Salvage Marines), which was based on a story by James Wan, Ingrid Bisu and Jordan. Sources tell us this film is a deal more risqué than M3GAN, falling in the tradition of ’90s domestic thrillers but with a modern, technological twist.

Single White Female, directed by Barbet Schroeder and starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh, is a psychological thriller that not only captivated audiences with its tense narrative and compelling performances but also marked a significant point in the female-villain-led thrillers of the 1990s, taking what was originally a more direct-to-market “erotic thriller” (from filmmakers like Jag Mundhra) and making it mainstream, leading to a proliferation of similar films through the decade from filmmakers looking to cash-in… and it made a superstar out of actress Bridget Fonda.

Richard Gadd went into the Emmy nominations ranked second in our odds for Best Movie/Limited Actor for his performance as a man dealing with trauma and fighting off the advances of a stalker in “Baby Reindeer.” Since the nominations were announced on July 17, though, he has taken the lead according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, which sets him up to take home not just one, but three awards when they’re handed out on September 15.
Jon Hamm (“Fargo“) was the previous front-runner in the category for his role as a corrupt sheriff, but he has since dropped to third place, perhaps because “Fargo” underperformed in acting categories, only scoring three noms; conspicuously missing from the list were expected supporting nominees Jennifer Jason Leigh and Joe Keery. “Baby Reindeer,” meanwhile, submitted four actors for consideration, and all four of them got in.

If you're any kind of guitar aficionado, you might want to skip this article. Then again, if you're any kind of guitar aficionado, there's a good chance you've heard this gory story already. As for the rest of you, please know that I am absolutely serious when I tell you that this is a tragedy.
For 191 years, C.F. Martin & Company have been crafting beautiful acoustic guitars. They are precious instruments. If you've ever taken one across your lap and strummed an open G chord over its sound hole, you know its tone is unmistakably deep and resonant. You also know that a new Standard Series Martin will set you back anywhere between $2,500 to just under $10,000. So it should go without saying that an antique Martin from the 1870s would probably be valued somewhere in the five-figure range, but is really priceless.
So I'm not entirely sure what the Martin...

Exclusive: Jaquel Spivey (Mean Girls), Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Margaret Cho (Fire Island), Brigette Lundy-Paine (I Saw The TV Glow) and Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story) are among those set to star in Queens of the Dead, a new horror comedy directed by Tina Romero, daughter of legendary director George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead).
Co-written by Erin Judge & Tina Romero, the film pays tribute to the zombies from the elder Romero’s classic zombie films with a fresh, contemporary, and queer twist, promising to offer a genre-smashing, glam-gore thrill ride through the zombie apocalypse. The story follows an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies who must put aside their personal dramas and use their unique skills to combat the brain-thirsty undead when a zombie apocalypse breaks out during their drag show in Brooklyn.

With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations.
But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.
Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.
Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti; The Gilded Age...

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson were also snubbed on the Supporting Actor side.
Below, we enumerate the top 50 Emmys snubs in our estimation. These were the shows and performers that we thought had a strong chance to number among this year’s nominees. Let us know if there are others missing from this list that...

Ron Howard is reportedly developing a sequel to the 1991 hit film Backdraft, and Glen Powell is said to be considering joining up.
Here’s an interesting story which suggests that Backdraft, the 1991 firefighting drama may be getting a sequel. Well, another sequel that is given that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released a direct-to-video follow-up in 2019. Given that Ron Howard’s production company are involved this time though, we’d imagine that should this come to fruition, this one would be a proper bells and whistles sequel with a sizeable budget and lots of movie stars.
One movie star whose name was almost certain to pop up was that of Glen Powell.
He’s the man of the moment right now and he’s not averse to putting in a turn in legacy follow-ups either. Powell is currently appearing in Twisters, a loose follow-up to the 1996 film, Twister. He’s also...

Any regular theme park attendee probably has a list of their favorite roller coasters and rides (and maybe a go-to churro stand or two). But what about the hyper-specific category of special effects shows? Live stunt shows don't count, because those are too well-known. Instead, we're talking about more obscure attractions, the ones people might wander into on a whim between waiting in line for the park's ultra-popular rides.
In these special effects shows, most of which have since been closed down or revamped into other attractions altogether, park visitors were essentially herded into a controlled area to witness some kind of bombastic demonstration. Younger visitors may not even remember these, but they experienced their heyday in the 1990s, and were often based on a popular movie from the time.

Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker has had a long and celebrated acting career though initially he aspired to be an opera singer. He enrolled at the University of Southern California to study opera but then changed his major to acting and graduated from the school with a Bfa in Drama.
While still enrolled in college, Whitaker began acting professionally. His first film role came in a movie called “Tag: The Assassination Game,” which starred Robert Carradine and Linda Hamilton. That same year he would get a small role in a movie about high school students that would become a classic. He joined a cast of unknown actors including Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold and Phoebe Cates in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” The film was a bit of a sleeper hit in 1982 but became a classic through repeated showings on cable TV.

The 2024 Emmy nominations announcement being just one week away means that Gold Derby users have been shaping the odds in the 12 main acting races for over five months. At the end of June, eight of the initial dozen frontrunners could be credited with maintaining their top positions all season, but the same now applies to only six of them, all but one of whom are men.
The lone female February frontrunner left standing is Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), whose victory on her second consecutive drama supporting actress bid seems quite assured. As of this week, she is generally expected to be joined in the winners’ circle by two-time comedy lead champ Jean Smart (“Hacks”), who started the season on top before being usurped by Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) a few weeks in. Now, two months after winning the favor of our Top 24 Users, Smart is every Gold Derby predictor subgroup’s first choice.

Who says 1994 was a classic year for cinema? Netflix begins today to make that argument, curating a release of 17 films that turned 30 this year. The streamer has its list below. I have mine, and with the exception of the seminal Farrelly Brothers-directed Dumb & Dumber with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, and Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional, the film that stars Jean Reno and a sinister Gary Oldman and introduced the world to the outsized talent Natalie Portman, and maybe Ron Howard’s The Paper, there’s a lot missing. How about Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Clear and Present Danger, Sicario, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Interview With the Vampire, Speed, Ed Wood, and the other two films in a starmaking year for Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. Poolman is an empty film.
Darren Barrenman (Chris Pine) is an emotionally stunted man with a short attention span and a bee in his bonnet: conspiracy theories concerning local government planning decisions. Its a premise that could draw you in to watching a quirky comedy mystery. The only mystery is why anyone would stay to the end of Poolman. When he is not cleaning the single small pool outside of a block of condos, 'Db' is making a nuisance of himself petitioning council meetings over planning, public transport and reptoid involvement. About halfway through the film he is approached by an enigmatic woman with a proposal.

There are stories of coincidence and chance, of intersections and strange things told, and which is which and who only knows? And we generally say, ‘Well, if that was in a movie, I wouldn’t believe it.’ Well, believe it, because all of what follows actually happened during the making of Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 film Magnolia.
A film and production of gambles, absurdities, forgiveness, and reckonings, Magnolia evolved from what would be the final shot of the film – a smile, a symbol of hope in a world of misery, lost drive and…frogs – into one of the most divisive, memorable and best films of the century.
So, let’s get our buzzers ready and wise up as we find out: What happened to this movie?!

Arguably the closest race at this year’s Emmys, at least according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, is Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress, which as of this writing appears to be a three-way contest between Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country“), Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo“) and Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer“). Reis has the slight edge so far with 11/2 odds, while Leigh and Gunning are tied at 6/1 odds.

But our odds don’t tell the whole story. Reis is ahead for now because of how strong the consensus is that she will at least be nominated. Meanwhile, not quite as many people are certain of Gunning’s nomination, but more of them believe she’ll win. In fact, almost every predictions group favors Gunning for the win: Experts, Editors, Top 24 Users and All-Star Top 24. Leigh is actually ahead...

Gillian Anderson was once the face of TV thanks to her role as Dana Scully in “The X-Files.” That show awarded her some healthy, consistent Emmy attention (more on that later) before she underwent a bit of a break from that awards applause for a while. However, Netflix’s “The Crown” gave her career something of a second wind and that Andernaissance (sorry) has continued here with “Scoop.”
Like “The Crown,” Anderson excels here portraying a real-life person in a true story concerning the royal family. While she played Margaret Thatcher in “The Crown,” she takes on the role of presenter and journalist Emily Maitlis in Netflix’s “Scoop.” This TV movie documents the behind-the-scenes story of how producer Samantha McAlister (Billie Piper) secured the “scoop of the decade” and landed that interview with Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell).

Last Thursday marked the beginning of the annual 11-day period during which members of the TV academy cast their ballots for the Primetime Emmy nominations. Since there are fewer candidates in practically every category compared to last year, there are also fewer nomination slots up for grabs. Indeed, performers eligible for half of the 16 main acting awards must now fight harder to officially compete for them.
Those who were immediately cut from Gold Derby’s predicted acting lineups once the ballots dropped were supporting players Allison Janney (“Palm Royale”), Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”), Holland Taylor (“The Morning Show”), and Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”), non-continuing program leads Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”) and Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”), and drama series guests Sharon Horgan (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”). One of the most popular genres is definitely the Western. It's funny that westerns were popular in the 50's and 60's and then came back with a new wave of fame so many years later. One of the most popular shows of the genre is Yellowstone, but apparently there are many movies that give a more realistic portrayal of everything terrible that usually happens in a given reality.
And although the movie is far shorter than a series, we guarantee you that these 5 movies will give you much more than any show could.
1. Django Unchained (2012)
Quentin Tarantino's iconic film is definitely worthy of being number 1 on the list. Created in 2012, it tells the story of a slave named Django who is freed by a bounty hunter named King Schultz for his own purposes. Django helped Schultz and then wanted to find out where his wife was sold to. And they start their adventure.

With prominent supporting roles in classics like “A League of Their Own” and “Dick Tracy,” as well as the lead in the screen adaptation of the musical “Evita,” Madonna’s film career is well-established, but might never have happened without her star turn in the 1985 cult comedy “Desperately Seeking Susan.” A modern farce set in the scuzzy beauty of ‘80s New York City, the film follows a straight-laced housewife and a bohemian drifter who become intertwined in a criminal plot involving a pair of stolen earrings. While the film is led by actress Roseanna Arquette, it quickly became known as the “Madonna movie,” with her character’s fashion sense — which mirrored Madonna’s own — and her free-spirit energy coming to define the popular culture of the era.

After racking up three Emmy nominations for her fan-favorite comedic performance in Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, Juno Temple took a dramatic turn leading the ensemble cast of FX’s Fargo season five, playing a seemingly “Minnesota nice” housewife with a secret dark past and some particularly unrefined survival instincts. For the 34-year-old British actress, going from comedy to drama is hardly unusual, having played a widely diverse range of supporting parts over the years, from 2007’s Atonement to 2018’s Bravo series Dirty John. But with the inherent duality of Dorothy “Dot” Lyon, aka Nadine Tillman, a woman who sometimes has to be simultaneously nurturing and vicious, Fargo put her ability to switch roles to the test.

However, for Fargo creator Noah Hawley a fifth time was a charm, not just in a stronger homage to the original 1996 multi-Oscar winning movie, but a deconstruction of current day red-state attitudes. For him, Fargo is about the tragedy that occurs when people fail to communicate, and this season centers around the varying definitions of freedom. Not to mention, it features several twists and turns one doesn’t see coming.
Season 5 follows Juno Temple as Dot Lyon, a housewife with a dark past who is mired in warring America, for Episode 1 tees off with a riot that breaks out at a school board meeting which results in the show’s protagonist tasing an officer and heading to...

Appearing for a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event, Jeff Russo described how he adapts to Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley’s requests.
Noting several times that he adjusted the show’s music per Hawley’s ideas, Russo also addressed a cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” in the season. The revamped version accompanies Jon Hamm’s character Roy Tillman as he walks from a car to a barn where his men are holding Dot (Juno Temple).
“I get these phone calls from Noah,” Russo said. “It’s really funny. We have a great working relationship. He will call me and he’ll be like, ‘Okay, Toxic.’ I’m just quiet. ‘Uh, okay.’ Then he said, ‘No no no, hear me out. The walk.’ And I knew exactly what he’s talking about with the walk.”
Lisa Hannigan, a frequent Russo collaborator, sang the lyrics for “Toxic.”

Poolman had a lot going for it. Chris Pine, a solid and dependable actor, is directing for the first time while also playing a Lebowski-esque lead character. A Los Angeles-set neo-noir tale of conspiracy, scheming, and murder. And a stacked cast—filled with names like Annette Benning, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Clancy Brown, DeWanda Wise, Stephen Tobolowsky, alongside the legendary Danny DeVito and Ray Wise (Twin Peaks fans should know who that is). Sadly, the film turned out to be nothing but a big howler. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but absolutely nothing works here. The writing is clunky. The central mystery is dumber than the detective novels I used to write inside my head when I was in the seventh grade. Nothing good can be said about the acting either, except DeVito and Wise, who always fire no matter what the situation. The only saving grace is probably the retro-cool soundtrack,...
