In our era of cinematic universes, it feels like every actor has donned a cape at some point, but back in the days of Christopher Reeve’s Superman, being a superhero represented something larger than life. There was a responsibility, a moral code to abide by. You weren’t just playing a superhero — you were one.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is not afraid of equating Reeve to the Man Of Steel he played in four Superman films between 1978 and 1987. Archival footage from Reeve’s films, interviews and personal home videos cut to CG vignettes of the actor cast in marble like a Greek deity — but that stone eventually cracks. Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s documentary begins with the moment that irrevocably changed his life: Reeve was seemingly capable of superhuman feats himself, with a thrill-seeking interest in sailing, skiing and flying, but it was an accident during...

Prompted by the massive success of the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, ABC released dozens of thrillers and horror movies under their Movie of the Week banner between 1969 and 1975. Starting in 1973, the network branched out into late-night programming intended to compete with talk show king Johnny Carson over on NBC, and the five feature-length telefilms collected as The Classic Ghosts by Kino Cult originally aired in that slot.
These telefilms were shot live on two-inch tape in a manner akin to daytime dramas, which does lead to the occasional flubbed line of dialogue. Furthering the comparison, two of the movies were directed by Lela Swift, who helmed over half of Dark Shadows’s approximately 1,200 episodes. Gloria Monty, who directed two others, went on to radically reshape the floundering soap General Hospital in the late ’70s. It’s notable that the creative team behind the telefilms were mostly women. When we talk about movies being hard to categorize or even succinctly summarize, this movie is the poster child for that statement. Almost 50 years on and that still holds true but how about is it good? Does a movie need to be put in a specific area or even be able to be explained to still be good? The Rocky Horror Picture Show is in a category all by itself and yet has had spinoffs of sorts and on-stage revivals since its inception and shows no signs of slowing down. I’m not even sure how the introduction to such a movie should be fleshed out so take a jump to the left, a step to the right, put your hands on your hips and bring your knees in tight. We are about to take a time warp and see if The Rocky Horror Picture Show still stands the Test of Time.

As of this week, it’s officially been 20 years since the release of Team America: World Police, the puppet action movie made by famed restaurateurs Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Sure, it’s not perfect, but at least Team America gave us one of the greatest sex scenes in movie history, and one of the greatest outraged Sean Penn letters in “Sean Penn being outraged” history.
At the time, a lot of fans were expecting Team America to be a blistering takedown of George W. Bush’s calamitous foreign policy, but instead they got a movie that was more focused on satirizing Jerry Bruckheimer-produced blockbusters and lampooning self-involved celebrity political activism. As a result, there were a number of cameos from marionette versions of A-list Hollywood stars, including the aforementioned Penn, Susan Sarandon and Alec Baldwin. But the breakout star of the film was, of course, Matt Damon.

Oscar winner Tim Robbins has been on the big screen for well into his fourth decade. Tour through our photo gallery above of Robbins’s 10 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
Robbins won his Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for playing a former child abuse victim suspected of murder in Clint Eastwood‘s “Mystic River” (2003). He also competed as Best Director for the death-row prison drama “Dead Man Walking” (1995), which brought Susan Sarandon a Best Actress trophy. But while that film is certainly worthy of consideration among his best, this gallery is focused on Robbins’s work in front of the camera, so you won’t find it in our gallery above.
Though Robbins has yet to be recognized at the Emmys, his work on the HBO film “Cinema Verite” (2011) did bring him a Golden Globe nomination as Best TV Supporting Actor. Before that the actor won a...

Richard Gere has never won an Oscar, and if history holds true, he might not be winning one anytime soon. In fact, the actor, who first rose to fame for his turn in films like "American Gigolo" and "An Officer and a Gentleman," didn't show his face at the Academy Awards ceremony for two decades after he was reportedly blacklisted from the awards following a political speech he gave in 1993.
In case you didn't see the moment in question live, it's worth noting that Gere was a sex symbol and a huge deal in Hollywood in the early '90s, and letting him present the Oscar for Best Art Direction was no doubt good for the show's then still-high ratings. When he stepped on stage that night, America was still gripped with leftover "Pretty Woman" fever, and Gere would go on to make some of his best films (including "Primal Fear...

Kerry Washington as an army captain delivers a rousing speech to the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to battle overseas during the Second World War in the teaser trailer (below) for Netflix’s The Six Triple Eight from writer, director and producer Tyler Perry.
“This is our mission. And we will not fail,” Major Charity Adams (Washington) declares quayside as the 855 Black women and women of color of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion march forward at her command to board a ship taking them to battle.
Their mission was to sort through a three-year backlog of mail — 17 million letters in all — yet to be delivered to American soldiers overseas, to restore morale on the front lines.
The Netflix biopic is part of an effort to give the 6888th battalion belated recognition for their heroism as they overcame discrimination to complete their letter-posting duties well ahead of schedule.

Now we all know about the infamous feud of Charlie Theron and Tom Hardy on the sets of Mad Max: Fury Road. An incredible film by George Miller, with an incredible casting, and the final result turned out quite well. But behind the scenes, the two lead stars of the movie often clashed.

One of the comedy film subgenres that Hollywood doesn’t really make anymore is really gleefully, gloriously stupid comedies like “Dodgeball.” That’s why “The Gutter” is so special. If you watch this new trailer for Magnolia’s deranged bowling comedy, you’ll feel like you got hit in the head with a bowling bowl and woke up back in 2004.
“The Gutter” stars Shameik Moore (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”) as Walt, a horny slacker who gets a job at a bowling alley and discovers he has a preternatural skill for bowling. With the help of barfly Skunk, Walt takes the Slob (Super League of Bowlers) by storm in order to raise funds to save the bowling alley from foreclosure. But he’ll have to defeat legendary bowler Linda “The Crusher” Curson (Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon), who doesn’t take kindly to his upstart ways. It’s a supremely goofy movie,...

"There is no way I'm gonna let these two bozos take all my glory without a fight!" Magnolia Pictures has debuted the official US trailer for a sports comedy film called The Gutter, made by comedy brothers Isaiah Lester & Yassir Lester. It's set for a US release in November including VOD. This indie bowling satire stars Shameik Moore as a guy who gets a job at the bowling alley's bar only to end up training to become a pro and conquer a bowling champion (played by Sarandon channeling a "Karen"). This plot borrows from the classic Kingpin (make money pro bowling), which for decades has been one of the only bowling comedies to ever exist. The Gutter is an "outrageous and hilarious spin" on sports comedy. Walt is pressured to embrace his bowling talent, sparking backlash from detractors seeking to undermine his sudden pro success. Starring Shameik Moore, Susan Sarandon,...

Tim Curry has weighed in on the debate that plagues “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” every Halloween: Is the cult classic problematic?
“Through a 2024 lens — of course it is. But babies, being gay was *illegal* in England 6 years before Rocky was first staged in ‘73,” Curry, who played Dr. Frank-n-Furter both onstage and in the 1975 film adaptation of the play, wrote on X. “It was brave, bold & brilliant for its time. Look beyond the end of your own nose, just briefly. Please.”
As previously stated, this particular pop culture debate comes up nearly every time “Rocky Horror Picture Show” is relevant — so, basically, every Halloween. But this year, it was an X user @chickadi that started this year’s debate. Despite sparking the rounds of criticism this year, their initial post wasn’t entirely critical or dismissive of the movie.
Ah the ‘is Rocky Horror problematic’ chat. Through a 2024 lens – of course it is.

Bull Durham is arguably one of the best sports movies of all time, albeit with a strong romantic angle. Susan Sarandon stars opposite Costner as Annie Savoy, who develops feelings for Crash.

One of the most memorable scenes from the film is the kitchen counter love scene, which showcases the passion and chemistry between the lead pair. Kalen Gorman, who produced interviews and other behind-the-scenes content for Ryan Murphy’s Glee, entertainment that generated hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and other platforms, has died. She was 59.
Gorman died Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a battle with breast cancer, a publicist announced.
Gorman collaborated with actors, hosts, show creators, production crew and others on scripted and improvised marketing shoots that made for more than 300 pieces of content for every episode of Glee during its first five seasons (2009-14).
“I always thought, God, for the fans who love this show, this is what they want to see,” she said in an interview in April. “They want to feel like they’re part of it.”
Gorman later produced behind-the-scenes content for the 2017 first season of Murphy’s anthology series Feud, starring Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis and Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford, and for Showtime’s Homeland.

Late-night horror series The Classic Ghosts has rarely been seen since airing on ABC’s Wide World of Mystery in 1973, but that’s about to change.
The UCLA Film & Television Archive has preserved all five installments, coming to Blu-ray on October 29 via Kino Lorber’s Kino Cult line. Watch the exclusive trailer below.
Produced by broadcast pioneer Jacqueline Babbin, The Classic Ghosts was celebrated upon its debut for being made by a predominantly female crew, including trailblazing television directors Gloria Monty (General Hospital) and Lela Swift (Studio One).
Shot on videotape in the style of a soap opera, with expressive and colorful production design, The Classic Ghosts has an immediacy and otherworldliness akin to Dark Shadows — not surprising since two of the directors (Swift and Henry Kaplan) directed hundreds of episodes of the classic horror TV series.

During their time on Saturday Night Live, The Lonely Island weren’t exactly known for being terribly controversial. Sure, the musical comedy trio dropped tracks about sticking your junk inside of a Christmas present, and ejaculating in public, but they also devoted a lot of time to more PG topics like Narnia, Captain Jack Sparrow and the concept of existing on a boat.
But it turns out that the group did occasionally find themselves in hot water with the NBC brass. In the most recent episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, a listener sent in a question inquiring about the “most trouble the Lonely Island got in during their tenure at SNL.”
While they didn’t get in trouble exactly, Jorma Taccone did describe how, after they “spent a lot of money” on the Digital Short “I Wish it Would Rain,” he received “a very sarcastic response...

Two Winnipeg filmmakers gathered in Toronto last week to discuss their latest works and their relationship to their hometown and its anti-mainstream film scene. Matthew Rankin, whose “Universal Language” now represents Canada in the Best International Feature Film Oscar race, was joined by Canadian auteur Guy Maddin at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival for a dialogue about their filmmaking.
Guy Maddin co-directed the 2024 film “Rumours” with Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, and the political satire has played festivals far and wide, from Cannes to TIFF. Rankin won the Directors’ Fortnight Audience Award at Cannes for his absurdist triptych comedy that riffs on Wes Anderson while homaging Abbas Kiarostami. Rankin’s Oscilloscope release (out early next year) connects three seemingly unrelated stories about people in Winnipeg whose ordinary lives take a surreal turn.
Both Maddin and Rankin shared in their desire not to be pigeonholed into genre. Though Rankin is only...

Ben Whishaw starred as Q in three James Bond flicks alongside Daniel Craig, but over the weekend, the British actor said he isn’t expecting to receive a call to star in a fourth.
“I don’t think I’m going to be in the next one,” Whishaw told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg. “I think they’re going to start all over again, and with a new cast, a completely new cast. I think that’s my hunch, but I don’t know. I have no idea.”
Whishaw added that he would star in another Bond flick if asked but said change could be good for the franchise.
“I think it might need a new lease of life and a whole new group of people,” he said. “But if they asked me, I would do it, of course.”

Will there be room for two Oscar winners from the same movie this awards season?
Pedro Almodóvar’s exciting melodrama “The Room Next Door” is riding high after winning the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Sony Pictures Classics is preparing for an aggressive awards campaign for the film. Variety has learned exclusively that the movie’s two Oscar-winning stars, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will be positioned for lead actress consideration in the upcoming awards season. In addition, co-star John Turturro is set to campaign for his first Oscar bid in the best supporting actor category.
The film is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” and tells the story of two women — war correspondent Martha, played by Swinton, and author Ingrid, portrayed by Moore — who reunite after many years under emotionally charged circumstances. The nuanced performances and intimate narrative have garnered critical acclaim.

The vampire subgenre has been at the forefront of horror for over 100 years, and the myths of undead creatures living off of human blood go back countless years further. The best vampire movies ever made are, mostly, incredibly varied. There’s a whole lot of great “Dracula” movies out there, sure, but also art-house nightmares, mainstream action movies, silly comedies, Neo-westerns, heartwarming romances and more. And if you ask us, these are the very, very best.
(Film Arts Guild) “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” (1922)
F.W. Murnau’s eerie silent classic is 100 years old, and it still has the power to shock and horrify. Telling an extremely plagiarized version of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” – Stoker’s estate successfully sued, and nearly had every single copy of “Nosferatu” destroyed – the film stars Max Schreck as the verminous Count Orlok, who moves from his haunted castle to Germany, and brings a supernatural plague along with him.

Since it first hit theaters in 1975, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has been a spooky season mainstay and a staple for late-night moviegoers. Based on the stage musical of the same name — which came out two years prior — the cult classic introduces a young couple, Janet Weiss and Brad Majors (Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick), whose car breaks down near a mysterious mansion; when they call on the house to ask for help, they're met by a fascinating cast of characters, to say the absolute least.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is referred to as a "cult classic" for a reason; as Roger Ebert once put it, "it was ignored by pretty much everyone" when it originally came out. These days, pretty much every major city offers midnight viewings of the movie, inviting audiences to dress up, throw things at the screen, and participate while the movie screens. So what...

Kevin Costner’s second installment of his Western franchise “Horizon: An American Saga” earned a three-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, before the director and star was crowded by fans.
The applause for Costner’s “Horizon 2” had barely passed the three-minute mark when he became encircled by enthusiastic fans — holding up their phones to get selfies or take videos — and was therefore escorted out by security. The follow-up to June’s first edition of “Horizon,” “Chapter Two” debuted at the festival’s Sala Giardino — a much smaller theater than typical premiere-host Sala Grande, which was otherwise occupied on Saturday night with Venice’s awards ceremony. “Chapter One” of “Horizon” premiered at Cannes Film Festival back in May to a seven-minute ovation.

Splashy Last Week On The Lido
Uncharacteristically buzzy: The Venice Film Festival ends tomorrow after an uncharacteristically buzzy second week. The festival is usually front-loaded, with the splashiest titles playing early. This year, however, Alberto Barbera, who dished to Andreas, said the lengthy runtimes of some competition titles meant the spoils had to spread across both weeks. Enter Brady Corbet’s 215-minute post-wwii epic The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Stacy Martin, Raffey Cassidy, Emma Laird, Isaach De Bankolé and Alessandro Nivola. The pic was well received, landing a 13-minute ovation from the Sala Grande audience. Pedro Almodóvar launched his English-language debut The Room Next Door with his leading ladies Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.

Netflix confirmed the deal, and offered reaction from Nonnas‘ filmmaking team:
Gigi Pritzker, whose Madison Wells originated the film, said she was “delighted that Nonnas has found a great home at Netflix, where it will be widely seen and enjoyed. The film focuses on family, food and community, and in this turbulent time those are things we can all celebrate.”
Said Fifth Season Head of Film Christopher Slager: “Once again Stephen Chbosky has brought magic to the screen in this heartfelt and joyous film. We cannot wait for audiences everywhere to sit down at the table with us and share this fantastic film thanks to our partners at Netflix.”

The deal was brokered by WME Independent and Fifth Season, latter of which was the studio on the film. It marks the third deal in the run-up to a Toronto Festival that is chock full of acquisition titles, including some titles that played Telluride. This after the Dito Montiel-directed Riff Raff was acquired for US by Roadside Attractions, and Sony Pictures Classics acquired Jane Austen Wrecked My Life before its TIFF premiere.
The available titles that buyers saw at Telluride include September 5, about how ABC Sports team broadcasting the 1972 Olympics in Munich, German rose to the moment and covered the kidnap and massacre of 11 members of the Israeli team in real time. The twists and turns and split-second decisions they made under Roone Arledge make for a harrowing thriller. Also in that mix is The Friend. In that film, Bill Murray plays an acclaimed writer whose companion is a Great Dane named Apollo. When he dies, the dog is adopted by one of the writer’s protegees (Naomi Watts) who tries to stash the oversized high-maintenance pooch in her Manhattan rent-controlled apartment, which has a firm no dogs allowed policy. Scott McGehee and David Siegel direct a film that was one of the buzz titles of Tellurides.
While recent TIFF deal making has been slow going each year since the pandemic, the abundance of plum titles with strong casts, and an expected buyer appetite could portend a strong atmosphere for deals. TIFF begins tomorrow night.

Some of you will recognize the new face on Law &Order, if you were ever a fan of Fox’s drama “Prison Break” back in the day, then you will recognize Dean Norris. You might also recognize him from other roles such as Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Uncle Daddy in Claws, and “Big Jim” Rennie on the CBS series “Under the Dome” The actor has been in nearly 50 movies and over 100 different TV shows.
Law And Order Spoilers – Family Tension?
In Law & Order, he portrays Randall Stabler, brother to Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and will be a series regular on the fifth season premiering on Peacock.
Apparently, his character is returning in order to help take care of their Mom, Bernadette, portrayed by Ellen Burstyn. What is the drama between these two? It goes way back an incident involving their Father years prior, though right now we don’t know what that is.
