On paper, everything about Laika Studios’ initial theatrical release of Coraline feels a bit like a fever dream: a stop-motion animated horror film geared towards children based on Neil Gaiman’s even darker namesake novella, released in early February during the tail-end of The Great Recession, whose lead talent included Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher. By the time it was released in 2009, films like The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and The Corpse Bride (2005) had helped pave the way for stop-motion in the mainstream. But for a little-known studio like Laika (Coraline was one of Laika’s first projects), banking on the success of such a niche concept felt quite ambitious. Sure, Laika had Nightmare alumni Henry Selick take the helm on the film, but it seemed like there was a lot stacked against it: the Recession had folks frugal about spending, social media was still way in its infancy to be effectively leveraged for marketing,...

Scarlett Johansson is one of the most recognized stars in the world and has been one of the highest-paid actresses. While her role as Black Widow made her a global star, she has also been a critical darling and has performed in Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated roles. In one such Golden Globe ceremony, however, a terrible incident occurred.
When attending the ceremony and making her red-carpet appearance, Johansson was groped by TV presenter and fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi. Claiming to be figuring out how the dress was made, the event was broadcast live and ignited strong responses from the Academy and fans.

Lifetime’s Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce-inspired holiday movie has released its first look.
Lifetime announced its full holiday schedule Tuesday, and it includes Christmas in the Spotlight, starring Jessica Lord, Laith Wallschleger, Jeannie Mai and Haley Kalil. Though the film may not be officially inspired by Swift and Kelce, the story similarity is uncanny. The film centers on a pop star named Bowyn (Lord) who hasn’t found Mr. Right, until she meets a professional football player (Wallschleger) backstage at one of her shows. After Drew publicly declares he has a crush on Bowyn, they begin dating.
“With each passing day they spend together, their feelings grow stronger … but can it last in the limelight, especially when they both have such hectic schedules? With people questioning if their feelings for each other are real or just for show, the pressure mounts from the press, paparazzi, their fans and even their family,...

Is Curb Your Enthusiasm the first sitcom about an asshole? Jeff Schaffer says no.
In the academic sense, Curb Your Enthusiasm is about as textbook a comedy of manners as we’ve ever seen on television. For 12 seasons and 24 years, Larry David bristled against social norms and challenged conventions of polite society to the delight of cantankerous Curb fans everywhere, highlighting the absurdity of modern society as he sees it. However, according to entertainment journalist Joel Stein in his new essay for The Wrap titled “Bad Manners,” David and Curb Your Enthusiasm also carved out a new subgenre within the umbrella of the comedy of manners: the comedy of the asshole.
According to Stein, Curb Your Enthusiasm entered the zeitgeist during a unique period of TV history when the antihero main character was quickly becoming the most popular character archetype, just as crime dramas such as The Sopranos and The Wire...

In an alternate timeline somewhere, "Men in Black" may have led to the blockbuster leading man career of "Friends" star David Schwimmer instead of Oscar-winner Will Smith. Stories about Schwimmer's near-casting in the first "Men in Black" film have been around for years. However, during his appearance this week on the podcast "Origins With Cush Jumbo" (via The Hollywood Reporter), Schwimmer explained more fully why he ended up picking a different project over the hit sci-fi action-comedy.
"[It] was a brutal decision," the actor admitted to Jumbo, noting that a lot more went into his decision to decline the Agent J role than his tight "Friends" shooting schedule. "I had just finished filming 'The Pallbearer,' my first film with Gwyneth Paltrow, and there were high expectations of that which didn't come true," Schwimmer told the host with a laugh. I know it doesn’t feel like 2004 was 20 years ago, but it was, which means many great TV shows just turned 20 years old.
Seriously, 2004 is a sneaky good year for new TV premieres. Most of the titles on this list of good TV shows turning 20 years old in 2024 were broadcast hits. The cable networks had a decent market share in the early 2000s, but we’re still a decade before the streaming industry changed the TV game.
At this point in TV history, we’re still seven years before the Game of Thrones premiere. Remember that, please!
Let’s get the list started with the best show of 2004!

Created by Jeffrey Lieber, J. J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof, Lost premiered on ABC in the fall of 2004. The series told the story of a group of survivors of a plane crash on a mysterious island.

March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that’s the day Kurt Vogel Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for The Walt Disney Company, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968) – although they wouldn’t get together until Russell ended up in another movie starring Goldie Hawn, Swing Shift (1984). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what...

Comic book adaptations weren't always the most dominant genre in Hollywood and, in the early 90s, DC fans only really had Tim Burton's Batman movies and ABC's Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (along with stellar animated offerings like Batman: The Animated Series, of course).
Lois & Clark launched in 1993 and ran for four seasons and 88 episodes, turning Teri Hatcher into a household name. The world was a very different place back then, but a photoshoot featuring the Coraline and Tomorrow Never Dies star still managed to "break the internet."
ABC released a risqué photo of Hatcher's Lois Lane wearing only Superman's cape to promote the Man of Steel's TV show. It was supposedly one of the most downloaded photos ever at the time, and the actress reflected on that in a recent interview with The Guardian.

Coraline 15th Anniversary notched a nice no. 5 at the domestic box office with $8.63 million for the three-day weekend on 1,603 screens. The cume of $12.5 million including Thursday ($20+ million worldwide) broke its previous record for Fathom Events. Last year, the stop-motion animated feature by Henry Selick became the distributor’s highest-grossing classic with $7m+ at the box office over four days.
Coraline debuted in 2009 with an opening weekend gross of $16.8 million heading to $75.3 million domestically and $127 million globally. The PG-rated film based on the popular 2002 book by Neil Gaiman, was the first to be originally filmed in 3-D – with CG effects.
Dakota Fanning voices a young girl named Coraline, who walks through a secret door in her new house and discovers an alternate version of her life. There is no love quite like a forbidden one.
It can be Lifetime's specialty to portray the latest in the summer's Ripped From the Headlines slate, which brings forth scandalous love and murder with the Amish Affair.
It's a win for Ryan McPartlin fans, who will see the heartthrob in a whole new light than his usual fare.
As we've learned with many of these Lifetime films, the Amish community is rife with drama and scandal, just like any other.

In this instance, Amish Affair tells the story of a young woman who falls desperately in love with an Amish leader only to find herself in the worst position possible.
Amid their affair, her beau's ailing wife dies, and suddenly, it's a matter of who could be responsible for her murder with only one suspect in mind.

Between 1974 and 1991, a serial killer known as the Btk stalked the streets of Wichita, Kansas. Using methods too gruesome to describe, he bound, tortured, and killed no fewer than ten victims. Parents lived in fear of strangers at the door. By day, the city went about its business, but by night, a shadow hung over every home.
Into this period of unease stepped Ruth Finley. A telephone operator with a steady job and a loving husband, Ruth’s world was suddenly upended one evening with a call from a voice that should not have known her deepest secrets. References were made to a long-buried trauma, reopening old wounds.
From then on, Ruth found herself entangled in a nightmare not of her own making. Threatening letters and calls multiplied. A kidnapping left her battered on the edge of the woods. Yet through it all, she never lost her dignity or courage.

Yeah, it was the typical way. The manager or the agents sent me the script and said they were interested, "Would you take a look? Would you like to read?" It's the normal process.

Teri Hatcher is no stranger to sinister happenings that lurk underneath the surface of an otherwise idyllic life — after all, she’s best known for the eight seasons she spent playing girl next door Susan Mayer on Desperate Housewives. But the actress experienced a career first when she stepped into the dark world of Ruth Finley in, The Killer Inside: The Ruth Finley Story, a movie inspired by actual events. Lifetime “It was the first time that I ever played a real person in a true story,” she says of Finley, a quiet housewife from Wichita who made headlines in 1978 as the subject of a stalking case following her husband Ed’s (Battlestar Galactica’s Tahmoh Penikett) heart attack. With the possibility that her threats are linked to the area’s notorious Btk serial killer, Finley’s paranoia becomes rampant as investigators attempt to figure out the truth. Calling the film “spectacularly crazy and compelling,...

To celebrate the release of WondLa, the new animated series from Apple TV, we had the pleasure of chatting with star Teri Hatcher about the wonderful new show.
Jeanine Mason voices Eva, a typical teen: curious, enthusiastic, and spirited. The only difference… she’s being raised alone by a robot caretaker, M.U.T.H.R., voiced by Teri Hatcher (“Desperate Housewives”), in a state-of-the-art underground bunker. On her 16th birthday, an attack on her sanctuary forces her onto the Earth’s surface, and it’s not what she expected. The planet is inhabited by aliens, covered with other-worldly fauna, and there are no other humans to be found. In fact, it’s no longer called Earth… it’s called Orbona.

Based on the books by Tony Diterlizzi, the new Apple TV+ series WondLa follows the trilogy’s first book, The Search for WondLa. Set in the future, Eva (voiced by Jeanine Mason) has spent her entire life in an underground bunker known as the Sanctuary, far beneath the earth’s surface. Like many Disney movies, the series kicks off with Eva’s early years, racing through her life until she turns 16.
The charming series, developed by veteran House of Mouse producer Bobs Gannaway, follows another Disney tradition by centering on a parent-less teen. Eva was raised by Muthr, a Multi-Utility Task Help Robot. On her sixth birthday, she’s promised that once she passes her “final test,” she will get to walk through the big door in her bunker to the Earth’s surface, where she will meet her family.

The James Bond franchise has attained cult status mainly due to its suave and dashing protagonist who has been portrayed by various actors across generations, from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig.
