Frank Sinatra delivered some of the most compelling renditions of music in the 20th century. One of his best known was his 1960s masterpiece, “Strangers in the Night.” However, Old Blue Eyes wasn’t that fond of that particular piece of music. He called it “a piece of s***.”
‘Strangers in the Night’ was a hit single and album by Frank Sinatra
Strangers in the Night was a 1966 studio album by Frank Sinatra. The title track was released as a single that same year and hit number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 and Easy Listening Charts.
Far Out Magazine reported that Sinatra hated it when his songs became too popular. This was the case with “Strangers in the Night” which the singer called “a piece of s***” and “the worst f***ing song I’ve ever heard.”

Shirley MacLaine is making a ghastly racket. It sounds like a combination of retching and the “aack” noise that the protagonist of that old “Cathy” comic strip used to make whenever she was nauseated, horrified, infuriated or you name it. We’re discussing an encounter that MacLaine had with Donald Trump in the ’80s, when she went to look at an apartment in one of his buildings. “In his head, I could see he was undressing himself and me, and I got out of there very fast,” MacLaine writes in her new book, “The Wall of Life: Pictures and Stories From This Marvelous Lifetime.”
MacLaine is even more animated when I ask her what she made of the real estate developer turned Maga leader. “Did you hear me shriek?” she asks. “I think that says it all.” She pauses for dramatic effect before delivering a final, emphatic: “Yuck!”
Even at 90, MacLaine,...

Frank Sinatra historically covered music written by many different artists, adding his twist to popular songs. However, there was one John Denver tune where Old Blue Eyes may have outdone the original.
‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ Was Covered by Frank Sinatra in 1970
Frank Sinatra recorded his version of John Denver’s “Leaving on a Jet Plane” in 1970. It was released on his 1971 album Sinatra & Company. The original music and lyrics were written by the folk singer in 1966.
Denver’s version of the song was more folk-inspired than Sinatra’s bluesy version. There is also a distinct version in the delivery of the tune. One was sung by a young man in his early 20s and the other, a road-weary entertainer in his mid-50s.
Sinatra’s version of “Leaving on a Jet Plane” sounds like it was written for him. But as he sings each line of the lyrics,...

It’s a well-established fact that the respective creators of South Park and Family Guy hate each other, and that’s to be expected — theater geeks just love drama.
The animated comedy community is rife with rivalries, and some are much friendlier than others. Ever since the Golden Age of Warner Bros. and Disney, the cartoon business has always had a healthy spirit of competition between the power players that can occasionally spill over into ugly acrimony — like how Seth MacFarlane responded to a Simpsons gag about Peter Griffin being a clone of Homer by having Quagmire straight up sexually assault Marge and murder her family. However, MacFarlane’s most heated and most personal feud somehow isn’t with the predecessor series to which his Family Guy is so often compared, but with the outspoken creative duo of Trey Parker and Matt Stone who made their feelings about MacFarlane’s...

Frank Sinatra covered many styles of music throughout his long career in the entertainment industry. But after covering a late 1960s masterpiece by Paul Simon, the Chairman of the Board was criticized by the composer for tweaking his lyrics, saying “he can’t do that.”
Paul Simon wanted to stop Frank Sinatra’s version of his 1968 song
“Mrs. Robinson” was added to the soundtrack of the 1967 film The Graduate. Paul Simon did not write the song specifically for the movie. It was later released on Simon & Garfunkel’s fourth album, Bookends.
The tune became Simon & Garfunkel’s second number-one hit. In 1969, it became the first rock song to win a Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
One of the first recorded covers of the song was done by Frank Sinatra that same year. Paul Simon wanted to do everything he could to stop the song’s release.

Jack Jones, a singer who found fame and chart success on the easy-listening side of the street in the 1960s, and who later became etched in television-watching America’s psyche with the “Love Boat” theme, died Wednesday at 86.
Jones died of leukemia at a hospital in Rancho Mirage, Calif., his wife of 15 years, Eleanora Jones, said.
Jones had hits on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, but his highest chart numbers could be found on what was then known as the easy listening chart, which later became adult contemporary. In the easy listening format, he had No. 1 singles with “The Race is On” in 1965, “The Impossible Dream (The Quest)” in 1966 and “Lady” in 1967.
In particular, “The Impossible Dream” — a cover of the most popular song from the 1965 Broadway musical “Man of La Mancha” — became culturally ubiquitous, through Jones’ frequent TV appearances, even though it peaked at No. 35 on the Hot 100, where it...

Jack Jones, the silky Grammy-winning crooner who had hits with “Lollipops and Roses,” “Wives and Lovers” and “The Impossible Dream” before inviting TV viewers to set a course for adventure on The Love Boat, has died. He was 86.
Jones died Wednesday night at Eisenhower Medical in Rancho Mirage, California, after a two-year battle with leukemia, his stepdaughter Nicole Whitty told The Hollywood Reporter.
Jones was born into a showbiz family. His mother, Irene Hervey, was an Emmy-nominated actress who spent more than 50 years in film and on television. His father, tenor Allan Jones, portrayed the romantic male lead in Show Boat (1936) and in the Marx Brothers’ A Night at the Opera (1935) and A Day at the Races (1937), and he managed a hit song of his own with “The Donkey Serenade.”

Johnny Carson might have been furious with Don Rickles for busting his cigarette box, but Rickles wasn’t the comedian Carson most hated having on The Tonight Show. That honor went to a comic who’d been entertaining U.S. presidents since Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Bob Hope. “Johnny admired Hope’s place in show business, but he was not a great admirer of his work,” said Tonight Show producer Peter Lasselly in the book Hope: Entertainer of the Century (via Last Night On).
The difference between the two comics? Carson preferred off-the-cuff improvisation while Hope relied on scripted punchlines, according to Andrew Nicholls, Carson's former head writer. Hope “was a guy who relied on his writers for every topic,” explained Nicholls. “Johnny was very quick on his feet. He appreciated people who he felt engaged with the real world. There was nothing to talk to Bob about.”

Bryan Ferry has been making mischief for more than 50 years, on the margins of the rock world. But he’s still not done. He began as the singer/peacock/visionary of Roxy Music, but he started making his own solo records almost as soon as the band began. Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023, out Friday, is a five-disc journey through his solo career, with hits, rarities, outtakes, and B sides. It ends with an excellent new song, “Star,” a collaboration with singer-writer-painter Amelia Barratt and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"
You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

Who will win Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammys? This award goes to the artists, producers, and engineers of the year’s best single. That’s where this differs from Song of the Year, which goes specifically to songwriters. Though this award is not technically a popularity contest, commercial success is typically a major factor, like Miley Cyrus‘s reigning champion “Flowers,” a blockbuster that spent several weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. So will the next winner be a big hit as well? Scroll down to see our official racetrack odds, which are calculated based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. The odds are always changing, so we’ll be updating this list as the season progresses.
For most of history there were five Grammy nominees in the Record of the Year category, same as there were for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.

When Hallie Meyers-Shyer thinks about directors, she thinks about women — women like herself, or like her own mother, Nancy Meyers. When asked about the continued conversation around nepotism in Hollywood — or, more pointedly, the rise of second- and third-generation filmmakers in the current landscape — she thinks about her mother, too.
“I have a different experience than other people, because I think a lot of the people [in this conversation], their fathers are filmmakers,” Meyers-Shyer said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “For me, the benefit was I saw directing my whole life as a woman’s job, and that’s really powerful and unique. I feel very grateful for it.”
That’s only half the story, as Meyers-Shyer is in the somewhat unique position of being not only the child of a female filmmaker and a male filmmaker (her father is Charles Shyer), but also a second- and third-generation director. She’s certainly got perspective,...

One of the greatest yacht rock songs is Player’s “Baby Come Back.” The song is in regular rotation on stations dedicated to the slow, feel-good rock songs of the 1970s and 80s. But what is the secret behind this No. 1 hit from 1977?
The meaning behind ‘Baby Come Back’ explained
The secret behind “Baby Come Back” and its plea for the return of a lost love comes from a difficult breakup for not one, but two of Player’s members. The 1977 hit quickly shot to the top of the charts, as listeners resonated with the emotional lyrics and soft rock sound way before the term “yacht rock” was coined.
Player’s guitarist Peter Beckett was heartbroken after breaking up with a girlfriend. He confided in bandmate and keyboardist J.C. Crowley, who understood Beckett’s emotions, having endured a painful breakup himself. They recorded the song after recruiting bassist (and future...

Several MLB stars have called the New York Mets their team over the years, but few have the on-field presence of Pete Alonso. While the first baseman is well-known for hitting balls out of the park, fans might not know much about his personal life. While the man known as Polar Bear keeps his personal life pretty quiet, his wife, Haley Alonso, is always there to cheer him on. So, how did he meet his wife?
How did Pete Alonso meet his wife, Haley Alonso?
Baseball brought Pete Alonso and Haley Alonso together in a roundabout way. Pete and his wife were thousands of miles apart during their collegiate careers. Their paths probably wouldn’t have crossed if Pete hadn’t played in the Cape Cod League, a summer baseball league for collegiate standouts. Haley, a Boston native, was away from Michigan State University for summer break when she met Pete.

Ashton Kutcher and Sean “Diddy” Combs were friends for years. While Kutcher has reportedly come to regret their association following allegations of abuse against Diddy, he spoke highly of the hip hop mogul when they were friends. Diddy even wanted to form a new Rat Pack with the actor. As a result, Kutcher began referring to him as Frank.

Boxing has always had a close relationship with music, whether it’s Joe Frazier singing with his band on The Ed Sullivan Show the night before a championship fight, or Frank Sinatra becoming a ringside mainstay at Madison Square Garden. Nowhere is that bond stronger than with hip-hop, with prizefighters walking out to the ring with their favorite artists, rap verses referencing greats of the sport, and boxers dropping albums of their own.

Frank Sinatra’s career was the highlight of mid-20th century Hollywood when he ruled the hearts and cinema screens with his inescapable aura and soulful baritone. The actor-cum-singer left an everlasting legacy that’s hard to match, which is why a film based on him, courtesy of legendary director Martin Scorsese, has faced so many delays.

When you think of a world-famous Twitch streamer, there’s likely to be a couple of obvious details. They’re probably playing video games in a bedroom or living space filled with neat props and toys. Maybe they’re roaming the streets or at Irl events, speaking to fans or pulling pranks. But one thing is clear about streamers: they’re all people. Their accessibility and humanity are often their greatest appeal. More raw and real than traditional celebrities, streamers are supposed to be relatable — or at least, they’re perceived that way.

Michael McDonald is the undisputed king of a resurgence of smooth songs from the 1970s called “yacht rock.” His music is forever intertwined with the genre’s laid-back, soft rock sound of the late 1970s and early 1980s. However, McDonald once called the genre “ridiculous.”
Michael McDonald confesses he didn’t understand ‘Yacht Rock’
Michael McDonald’s distinctive, soulful voice, often described as smooth and soothing, became a hallmark of yacht rock. However, the former The Doobie Brothers member didn’t understand the term upon first learning about it.
In a 2017 interview with Built, McDonald agreed that the term “yacht rock” has since become a badge of honor in the music industry. “I’ve grown a fondness for it,” he explained.
However, at first, McDonald thought the term “was hilarious. It was almost uncanny.”
He continued, “It’s just king of weird how the music of the 70s has come back around.

Film director Martin Scorsese put rumors of retiring to rest recently. The 81-year-old director spoke at the National Museum of Cinema in Turin, Italy. There, he addressed speculation about stepping away from filmmaking.
“I have no plans to retire,” Scorsese stated clearly. The acclaimed director wants to continue creating movies. His comments come after two upcoming projects were delayed. But Scorsese explained the projects are still in development with adjusted timelines.
Some wondered if Scorsese would retire after a biopic on singer Frank Sinatra and a film about Jesus were postponed. The Sinatra movie has been in development for 15 years. Nearly 60 years after his directorial debut, Martin Scorsese still has a few more films left in him.
The Oscar-winning director recently shut down speculation that he’s planning to retire from his storied behind-the-scenes career as he was honored Monday at the National Museum of Cinema in Turin, Italy.
“I have no intention of retiring,” said Scorsese, according to World of Reel. “The film about Frank Sinatra is only postponed while the one about Jesus I am working on. I hope God gives me the strength and money to finish them.”
While meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican last May, Scorsese revealed he was inspired to make “a film about Jesus.” He gave an update on the project at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

Unless Frank Sinatra somehow rises from the grave and can convince them all to show up at the same live telethon, the surviving members of Monty Python likely aren’t going to be patching things up anytime soon. When it was announced that two high-profile Martin Scorsese films – one a biopic of Frank Sinatra, the other on Jesus – were being postponed, it led people to wonder what exactly was going on, with some thoughts leading the mind to consider: Is Martin Scorsese retiring? Well, Marty is here to tell you that he doesn’t plan on going anywhere.
Appearing at the Museum of Cinema in Turin, Martin Scorsese told the crowd, “I’m not saying goodbye to cinema at all. Martin Scorsese has refuted rumours that he’s set to retire following the delay of two upcoming films: quite the opposite, in fact.
A couple of weeks ago we covered a report which stated that both of Martin Scorsese’s upcoming planned feature films appeared to have hit delays. The legendary filmmaker released Killers Of The Flower Moon in late 2023 and in the wake of that project, announced he would be tackling a film about the life of Jesus, along with a Frank Sinatra biopic.
Both projects were said to be smaller undertakings than the epic productions that have become Scorsese’s trademark over the years.
However, in late September it was announced that both projects were on hold. No reason was disclosed at the time. Because both projects were suspended, that led to unfounded speculation from some quarters that the 81 year old filmmaker was in poor health. Yet Martin...

When news broke that Martin Scorsese’s next two planned films — a Frank Sinatra biopic and a religious drama, “The Life of Jesus” — were being postponed, unfounded rumors started swirling that the great filmmaker was retiring. In the "Magnum, P.I." episode "Laura", a retired NYPD cop named Sergeant Michael Doheny (Frank Sinatra) travels to Hawai'i for reasons he doesn't initially make clear. He hires Magnum (Tom Selleck) to help him track down the killers of a missing young girl, trying to close an unsolved homicide that took place in the Bronx. Magnum soon learns that the victim was Doheny's granddaughter, Laura (Kristin Brick), who had been kidnapped from Doheny's recent retirement party before being assaulted and killed. Magnum assumes Doheny wants the killers apprehended and jailed, but Doheny intends to kill the culprits himself.
In "Laura," Sinatra, then 72, gets to be fully out of control, beating up people in bars and yelling lines like "You slimy bastard. You beat her face to a pulp. You broke her body down to nothin' and then you threw her in an alley to die! And I'm gonna do the same thing to you!
