Severance (2006)
Surprisingly well done
I saw a test screening of this some months ago and laughed/cringed throughout the whole thing. I haven't seen the theatrical release yet but if it's anything like the test screening it's a must-see. The scene with the "bear-trap", the "leg" and the "mini-fridge" has to be one of the most horrifically funny things I've seen in a long time. Some jokes/scenes come close to the edge and if you are somewhat sensitive then I don't suggest going to see it. If you don't like "Corporate Team Building" events then you MUST go and see this ... it's just what Team Building deserves in my book! Go and see it and support a great British film.
Ghost Rider (2007)
So bad...
Oh where to begin. How could they screw up a movie with a premise like this.
The acting and the dialogue was awful even with actors like Cage and Peter Fonda delivering them, and the set up was rushed, like most of the rest of the movie. The FX ranged from OK to GOOD with the first transformation scene of Blaze to Ghost Rider being pretty well done but every change from there on in is in cheap and nasty morphovision and the morphing motorcycle looked stupid even if the flaming bike itself looked cool. The bad guys were non-entities and although they were supposed to be really powerful etc they don't do anything threatening through most of the movie and Ghost Rider eventually offs them with ridiculous ease, even the main dude at the end.
Honestly this movie has so many clichés you'll be bored less than half way in and after waiting about 30 minutes for Ghost Rider to appear you just want him to get off the screen straight away since apart from looking cool he comes across as a complete dork and his dialogue consists of really bad corny one liners. Every time he comes on screen you just hope to hell he doesn't say anything and when he does you'll be so embarrassed for the poor bloke.
Go get the comics instead.
Wrong Turn (2003)
Not Bad, Pretty Fun
I just saw Wrong Turn and I felt that it was a great movie considering all the terrible horror stuff that studios give us these days. In the press before this film was released the creators had described it as a throwback to 70's and 80's style horror, that is exactly what this thing was. This film could have easily been released 15 years ago and fit right in with all the other horror films of that time. I will admit, the plot in this one is pretty standard and it's not too tough to figure out which characters are going to survive but for me the fun was remembering a time in movies when all you cared about was how the characters were going to die, not how they survived.
Spider-Man (2002)
I was a comic book nerd girl...
To say I had been anticipating this movie would be a severe understatement. Since my days in elementary school I had day dreamed of a live-action Spider-man movie. I was one of few girls who loved reading comics. One would think that a product of Hollywood would have no chance of living up to such lofty hopes but this does. The special effects are perfect. The plot is original enough to remain interesting but doesn't throw the ideas from its comic book origins out the window. Every character and every relationship is exactly as it should be. Even what some would consider background characters like Jameson are like they stepped directly from the pages of the comic. It's also very well acted. I actually start to tear up when Uncle Ben dies sometimes when i watch it now. I don't know what else to say except I love this movie and it is a true benchmark for movies of its kind.
An American Haunting (2005)
Professional Critics are like Weathermen
The only profession's where you can be wrong more than 50% of the time is movie critics and weathermen. We know about weathermen, but how about film critics, these folks always seem to miss the mark, and they have again with An American Haunting. Before heading out tonight to the movies I went on to moviefone and I think those so-called critics gave the movie a D+, I give this movie a B. It seems to me these reviews were just a waste of time for the critics and they really didn't pay attention to the story within the story. Yes An American Haunting was about a spirit haunting the Bell family in Adams, Tennessee, but what this movie does is creep you out and keep you wondering why you are seeing this spirit frighten this little girl to no end. You see the trailers but if you didn't know ahead of time the spoiler you wouldn't have seen it coming. I didn't, the movie weaved in and out literally on the screen and it kept you wondering where it would end. At times I felt as if I was watching Jaws with the theme music. Every time the spirit was about to come around you kind of knew it was coming, this helped get me a little juiced up in anticipation. The cast was stellar, a great blend of veteran actors and a young and up and coming supporting cast. Cinematographer, Adrien Biddle was magnificent, he was able capture great colors and emotion in his shots. I hope other moviegoers have similar experiences as I had, it isn't often you come away feeling like a movie was worth the price of admission.
