Chillar Party (2011)
Brilliant
A must watch for all children and grown ups. Very well made film and excellent story.
Dhh (2017)
Must watch
A major issue of kids not studying and the dilemma faced by their teachers and parents. A must watch for everyone.
Mumbai Diaries (2021)
Gritty
No retelling can ever capture the hard reality and trauma of 26/11. This show is one of the best in showing most of the events that happened and what people involved would have gone through. The characters are well sketched and there is no unnecessary melodrama, or heroic stunts. It is real. I loved the idea of showing the difficulties of a Government Hospital.
Soni (2018)
Brilliant
A very realistic portrayal of a police woman's duty and that too in Delhi. Very well acted and shot like a documentary. Not a boring moment at all. Will not call it entertainment but a movie that makes you think and look at uniformed officers in a different light.
Joji (2021)
Awesome
The story of Macbeth never fails to inspire generations. Joji is no exception, we know it is a tragedy but in what way is what we are waiting to know. From start to finish this movie is atmospheric and every actor has played their role to perfection, no hamming, overacting in fact they have shown true human emotions for what they are. No sentiment. In addition to the actors the rubber plantation and the background score make a perfect setting for this tragedy to unravel.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Fantastic
I have not read a single book of Bernard Cornwells series so I won't compare book and show. The show is astounding right from the introduction of characters, the costumes, the cinematography. Seasons 1-3 are binge worthy. Gives a good history lesson as well.
Stranger Things (2016)
Pure entertainment
Parallel Dimensions, the 80's, Kids on an adventure that's pure entertainment. Seasons 1&2 were brilliant, season 3 dragged a bit. Awaiting season 4. It's a treat to watch Winona Ryder after so long.
Sherni (2021)
Relevant, real and flawless
A film that truly portrays the dilemma faced by really good forest officials. Excellent characters, well acted and a showcase of what people living near forests endure. A complex reality broken down and shown in a simple manner.
Saand Ki Aankh (2019)
Interesting Biopic
A movie that has Taapsee pannu and Bhumi Pednekar together definitely deserves a watch. Both actors have created a niche for themselves as character actors.
This is a biopic of two women who become sharpshooters by chance and how they make a career for themselves. Sounds normal, but not normal when you come from a village where women have to keep their head covered and basically have no say in anything and can't do anything.
It is very funny and entertaining and its a joy to know such lives. Inspires the women and men of today.
Sonchiriya (2019)
Powerful
Sonchidiya refers to the Great Indian Bustard which is a highly endangered bird and was found in the chambal region. It is also a mythical reference to the Golden Bird which we are all searching for , which is believed to change ones fortune.
The plot of a group of rebel bandits and how tragedy tears them apart along with the suspense of a past tragedy makes the title very apt.
The actors all of them have given a tremendous performance and the movie is edited very well.
from start to finish it is a treat for any dacoit movie fan, the Chambal ravines, the heat dust, the raw language and the great acting.
A true Indian Western and I wish more movies come like this and save the name of Bollywood.
Laal Kaptaan (2019)
Period Drama Brilliant
This movie is a sleeper hit. Very few know about it and even fewer have watched. Film companies need to get their sense of which film to market right.
Laal Kaptaan is a treat. The common ingredients of Revenge, Suspense and Intrigue are set in ancient India and shows a Naga Sadhu seeking revenge. It is this setting that scores very high and Saif has given a solid performance.
This movie is a treat and different from the normal Bollywood Trash.
Happi (2019)
Fantastic
For me the name Pankaj Kapur is enough to make watch the movie. An actor par excellence and one who has not got his due.
In Happi he does it once again and this time he raises the bar very high, I doubt it if there is any actor who could have pulled this role off. He plays a simpleton and a man who is so innocent that it hurts. It shows how his days go by and how the people he is surrounded with, all poke fun at him. This is a showcasing of how as a society a lot of value has been put on success, shrewdness, being calculative that we are losing innocence and the basic ability of being humane.
Happi is at once a Drama, Comedy and Tragedy. Watch it for Pakaj Kapurs phenomenal acting and the wonderful photography.
Nude: Chitraa (2018)
Auteur Cinema
I came across the international cut while browsing and the title piqued my interest. It is a provocative title and the plot about the life of real life nude models in the famed art colleges of india made me wonder how will it be portrayed. It is with these thoughts that I settled back and watched NUDE.
The movie blew my mind. It is one of the finest films ever to come out of India and on further research I found that the Director Ravi Jadhav is one of the finest of Marathi Cinema.
The camera work is outstanding and it makes you feel the anxiety, shyness and also the mixed feelings of shame and pride that the models undergo. The entire movie is layered and the camera work peels it layer by layer. Mind you not even one scene in the movie looks obscene or sensual.
Now the two actors Kalyani Mulay and Chhaya Kadam deserve a salute for pulling off one of the most difficult roles. In our society and movies nudity is shied away mainly because it is taboo and also it makes it easier for the film to be watched by the entire spectrum of our population. In this setting making a movie where you are completely naked and the camera staring at you for long would have been extremely difficult for the actors. They are two ladies that need to be watched as each one of them have given a powerhouse performance.
In conclusion a movie that will be watched repeatedly and one which will in the coming years become a case study in film schools and a cult film.
La casa de papel (2017)
A good plot ....... wasted
So we all love a good thriller and especially one involving a bank robbery and hostages. An excellent idea, a superb start the first season and parts of the second season where excellent but then they destroyed everything with loads and loads of melodrama and stupidity.
In fact some of the most melodramatic Bollywood films seem better than Money Heist. You can watch a lot of the episodes on Fast Forward.
Why did they drag and ruin everything.
Joker (2019)
A Masterpiece of Masterpieces
Joaquin Phoenix as an actor has evolved and has created a name for himself. He has been on my radar since Signs and with every movie he has amazed me with his repertoire of talent. A movie that has been etched in my memory is Her.
So with these expectations I watched Joker and I was not disappointed.
This is the closest and the best origin story. I initially thought it would be an ordinary action flick pleasing everyone considering the director Todd Phillips who is known for The Hangover but I was wrong.
This is a movie that every one will relate to, we all have a dark side, we all have felt or are lonely, and we do find society absurd though we conform.
The way Joaquin breathes life into the character of Arthur a failed comedian and his slow transformation into Joker is definitely going to be taught at film schools....the finest piece of acting I have seen in ages.
With Joker he has surpassed De Niro and DiCaprio in acting.
Every other aspect of the movie is superb the haunting music, the dialogues the way it's shot and it is in every way relatable to what is happening today with the pandemic. Chaos.
Watch it on repeat!!!!!
The Mule (2018)
Clint Eastwood
Well it's a Clint Eastwood movie what can go wrong. It's based on true events and the movie just grows on you. Watch it for Eastwood the beautiful shots of the highways. On the end the movie does make you reflect on what choices you have made and should have made.
Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
Fun as hell
So a lot of people have given ok ratings but I am going to give it a nine. Here's why:
1. The characters are still the same and same actors as the first one.
2. The plot is even better
3. It has very subtle but many laughs out loud moments
Just watch it for pure entertainment
Even better watch them back to back
Zombieland (2009)
Zombies and fun
A very believable plot and even more believable characters. I love woody harrelson as an actor and in this his comic timing is superb. The character of Emma stone breaks the stereotype of how women are generally portrayed.
Pure fun, thrills and a lot of shooting
Yeh Ballet (2020)
Beautiful
After Gully Boy one more inspiring story if two dancers from the slums. A good plot very realistic and great acting by all the debutantes. Loved the choreography of not just the ballet but even the freestyle.
