Socrates (2018)
Amazeballed - Highly Recommended
Apologies for the tawdry headline but I was just now a bit blown away by this flick. I had recently seen director Alexandre Moratto's "7 Prisoners" (also excellent) so dug back into time (via IMDB LoL) to check out his earlier work.
WOW there was so much unexpected raw honesty and imagery and emotion in this movie I was flabbergasted. And it was produced by young students!!
Exceptional.
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019)
Not Amazing
I cannot agree with all the enthusiasm for this film. Yes, there were a few nice shots, but nothing extraordinary. Some music might have helped, as would some exterior shots of the estate, and some costume changes (why only one dress for the lead character for her entire stay?!). And it was slow. Skip this and watch The Piano (1993) instead. Some similar themes (forbidden love, being enslaved by tradition (arranged marriage), but far more engaging -on every level.
Die göttliche Ordnung (2017)
Wonderful, Spot-On Styling
Just saw this film, read a scathing review here, and felt compelled to balance the scales for this great movie.
We loved it! Visually it is 100% on point: the cinematography, costumes, hair, sets, and styling.
The acting was also very strong, and the script solid. Not sure what the negative reviewer watched, but we felt it was a great ensemble cast that achieved many emotional, nuanced moments.
I am drawn to "period pieces" like this and found it to be quite wonderful. I will be recommending it to friends.
