Town Diary (2002)
What happens when you go back in the past looking for a direction and you find the truth
Caught this flick at a private screening in Paris. Crowd stood up and cheered. Too bad no one from the crew or production team was there to bask. I know us French love Jerry Lewis but you can't blame us for acclaiming this film. A television producer returns to his hometown on Long Island and finds that a mysterious death by drowning could have been a murder. No Brian Jones or rockstar nonsense but a well thought out plot that kept the scenes interesting. The acting was balanced and "believable". A few of the actors went on to bigger things and by no means will they consider this effort a regret. A bigger stack of money would have given the film certain shots that were missing but over all what you have here is a well written story, that gains momentum. The dénouement (unravelling to those with less of a command of our gallic gibberish) rendered the tale credible; why ruin people's lives if you don't have to? Someone should give the Director a blank check and a blank page, I'm sure he'd put both to good use. This film is not for morons, it makes you have to think and in these times that's quite a compliment.
