Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Very Similar to The Original Series
Extremely enjoyable and clever. The character of captain Pike is spot on for that time period, with even a bit more wit than Kirk.
Spock is Spock, with a few things answered from his mysterious past touched on in the 1960's series.
The stories were all fresh and exciting, with a touch humor in the right spots. The special affects and tech are excellent. Sometimes they seem more advanced than equipment that Kirk had.
Looking forward to season 2.
Oh that is new, I am now being required to provide six hundred character for this review to be posted. So now I will have to open another application so I can find out what my word count is. This is not enough.
Day Zero (2021)
Water Problems well defined, Need other films for possible solutions.
I am very glad that I watched David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (2020) & KISS THE GROUND (2020) before seeing this documentary. They are more general and provided a Problem-Solution approach.
This documentary has done a good job of bringing together
locals, advocates and experts from some of the affected areas of the world. The Brazilian Rain Forest scientist is really dedicated and inclusive of all populations. He readily offers up that the native people understood the dynamics of the forest correctly, long before modern science.
NASA satellites are used as a key element to tie together some regions of the world and the whole planet. Coverage is impressive and visually stunning. Overview to specific to connectedness to overview to specific to...
For instance: The Cape Town water shortage footage, interviews, and expert perspectives provided valuable insights to help identify the causes of the problem - Past, Present and Future. Dry reservoir compared to 3 yrs prior was especially interesting to see, up close.
Yet it appears that so many problems exist, without the populations understanding why these issues are happening, that the documentary budgeted it's time to explain many of the problems we face, and so offers few solutions. The American farmer was able to say only one sentence about Regenerative Farming techniques.
The Adam Project (2022)
Finally, the BIG question answered: Time Travel with Multiple Missions
I am guessing the standard time travel movie 'cliche', has been : "You can not talk to yourself", is simply that no one thought it could be so funny and so serious at the same time.
The old "Don't take yourself so damn serious!" Finally paid off and I got to see a great movie.
Laughed a lot and got choked up once or twice and laughed a bunch more.
Space: 1999: Collision Course (1975)
Excellent visuals, fast FWD button needed for slow acting
The concept of the episode is very intriguing and the guest actor is amazing.
Sadly there were just too many very very slow and repetitive acting sections that required pushing the 5sec fast forward arrow repeatedly.
Honestly some actors in the series would have me skipping the rest of the series. Lucky fast forward is an option and the overall concept of the episode is worth missing the multiple slow segments.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Ha ha ha, What a fun adventure: Indiana Jones meets Pirates of the Caribbean
The only question is which Indiana Jones and Which Pirates of the Caribbean?
A for sure solid ten for this specific genre. The bad guys are will also seem familiar.
I would also say that a dash Around the World in 80 days was added to the mix.
Thank you Disney for the Dad Jokes, Glad to see they still live on.
The Rebels of PT-218 (2021)
False Title and Obviously didn't hire any veterans / consultants for this film
If this is based on real events, then why are none stated at the end of the movie?
Beside the obvious absence of anyone with military experience working on the film crew or production staff, it appears that Production failed to even invite anyone from the US Navy or the Merchant Marines to advise on this film.....
It seems too incredible that they even didn't ask one of the many WW2 groups to help with costumes.
I did learn from this film to stay away from anything these production companies.
I feel sorry for anyone connected with this film...... OUCH.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
Visually, intellectually and emotionally right on the money!
Real Human problems don't just go away, they get worse, much worse with time and technology.
I find the series extremely realistic about the struggles of youth, family, class systems, and very cool technology being a double edged sword.
The Animation is off the charts and the music fits perfect.
Plenty of action, explosions and truly genuine family issues that can make life tougher as the characters get older. There is HOPE, and plenty of it with characters trying to do the right thing, despite psycho parents and very unstable technology.
Foundation (2021)
Thnx IMDB critics, Reading the book, Both excellent
Both the series and the book keep me interested, Intrigued and curious for what is coming next.
After reading the section covered by the Series, I am extremely impressed with the adaptations
of the writers and the AWESOME visual concepts. For me the series goes int much greater detail and depth
the science of space ships and human manipulations.
The mysteries of human connections throughout the series adds something I found lacking in the book.
My only sadness about the series is they filmed in ICELAND and expect views to believe that Harry Seldon's band of scientist is less clever than Vikings Or they want us to assume that all the biologist got killed in the journey
and all the other scientist have no clue about growing anything. The lack of anything green after so many years, seems inhuman.
Free Guy (2021)
Finally, Revenge on GTA, I am so happy
I am so glad I am not the only person on the planet that wished
the pedestrians could fight back. Good Humor, Good story, Great Twist.
Ld like to type 150 words, but the lag for typing is like 60-75seconds. I never noticed this 150 minimal, guess my other reviews were always longer.
Just speed tested the local servers and thats not it....
This information is fitting, since the Movie
(FREE GUY ) is also about the people running the video games. Ha ha or at least they try to..... HA HA good movie.
Paths of Glory (1957)
BLACK AND WHITE makes if stronger
Very glad that Kirk Douglas did this film in B/W. I found it helped to focus on the essence of the situation and the absolutely imperative lesson from WW I.
Whenever a group of elites have the power to treat others without fairness and dignity, THE WHOLE WORLD SUFFERS. After seeing this film, it is no wonder that a pandemic followed directly after WW I ended.
Free State of Jones (2016)
BONUS: Real History and great acting
I guess Byron was right, ' Tis strange - but true; for truth is always strange; Stranger than fiction; if it could be told, How much would novels gain by the exchange!'
I would not have believed that something like this happened back in the 1800's .... very advanced stuff, even by today's standards.
The very end of the movie got it right too: "Those who fall to learn history are doomed to repeat it."..... Why has this history been kept out of schools??? Probably to amazing for kids to believe.
Down to Earth with Zac Efron: Iceland (2020)
Great Start of a Series about 'Using what we got."
Much more than natural wonders, this Iceland episode shows how the decedents of Vikings have been using
their rugged traditions and common sense to work with nature, instead of against it.
Good humor and good food ideas show that Iceland is is much more than bubbling hot springs and volcanoes.
No Sudden Move (2021)
FINALLY a crime mystery related to nearly everyone
WOW! The twists in this movie keep coming until the final closing sentences of historical fact at the end.
Well worth the watch. Great cinematography and acting.
Enjoy.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021)
Has Depth and Weight
From the one sentence 'words of wisdom' thru the tie-in with past mysteries of "Order 66" / Non-Clone Storm Troops / Empire Erased Clone War history until the last episode...... this series combines the best of Clone Wars and Rebels.... The detailed graphics are much appreciated.
Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984)
Lucas feel to it. Brave little girl, very helpful Ewoks
Logically, since the girl is smaller than most of the Ewoks, they are eager to help her. The brother gets the treatment he earns. Well thought out group dynamic for such an adventure. Team work seems realistic.
BONUS: Burl Ives voice as the narrator is timeless. Obviously its kids movie.
All for Liberty (2009)
Interesting American Revolution film for high school students
If we had films like this to watch back in school, I think history class would have been personal, well rounded and interesting. American Indian, 'Free born black man', women spies and a non-English immigrant all working together to be rid of Aristocratic domination. The film even goes further to include the story of those Americans who supported the British by tormenting and killing fellow Americans.
School schedule: The story line also fits time wise for viewing over two class periods.
Brazil (1985)
1984 OTT ( over the top)
I prefer 1984. Even tho the message has less of sting in Brazil, somethings are so beyond human capacity, the impact faded away for me.
Great visuals, even if they are absurd.
Sense8 (2015)
Wow, Full length Novel-Logical SciFi, Unique Plot, Believable Action, Sexy scenes & plenty of humor.
And to top it all off, the characters are intriguing, realistic, and actual develop as the mystery of WTF is going on. Acting was spot on for me.
A complete (start - to - finish) series in 2 seasons.
Oh yah, and lots of parties that fit into the diversity and Amazing spectrum of this series that is "complicated", but in a good way. I had a list of series "like 'The OA' and Stranger Things"... I am very thankful the coin toss worked out this way!
Dispatches from Elsewhere (2020)
Unique, Engaging, Clever, Funny, Mysterious..... Enlightening
After watching the whole first season, I can see why there is such a huge gap between IMDB scores and comments. The show seems to be for a specific audience that can "get it". If I saw this 10 or maybe even 5 years ago.... I don't think I would get it at all.
Great series for a few deeper perspectives on 'what life is about' from a different perspectives. The characters seemed very realistic to me, and the questioned they asked relevant. Thanks for the series.
Monster Hunter (2020)
Big Budget....eerrr Lots of Dead American soldiers?
Amazing graphics and a plot..... What was the plot?
I am scratching my head to figure out who is the target audience for this film......
Cargo (2009)
More than Expected
Glad I watched it. Great space scenes and an excellent plot.
The subtitles were fine given the movie could have been watched without reading them.... well most of them.
Glad they made this movie.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Similar to Star Trek: The Original Series
A few people mentioned over the years that Star Trek TOS got less quality "air time" & a lower budget, then canceled because is started to get too close to real issues in society.
Watching the social issues and finale that Falcon and the Winter Soldier deal with reminds of the last 4* episodes (S3) of Star Trek TOS and how the audience felt watching it back in the 60's.... no surprise the the 3rd season was shorter and final. *especially s3 e21 "The cloud minders"
As with many modern series out there these days, the 2nd season can be better, much better even. As Shakespeare said, " all the world is a stage". Looking forward to season 2, since both the MCU and the world keep coming up with plenty of material.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Power corrupts, Absolute power corrupts Absolutely
Glad that I stuck around for the 2nd season. Watching this series (S1->S2), has been feeling like going thru the hazy fog and growing pains of puberty in the hopes things make more sense later. Season 2 was better than I hoped! The character development and human themes are starting to make sense. Looking fwd to S 3. *One thing does surprise me still: How come Umbrella Academy didn't pop up when repeatedly searching for "Time travel films" ..... this series certainly is that, on multiple levels.... and with humor :-)
Big Fish (2003)
Burton's Dad? Wouldn't be surprised
Any look at the broad spectrum of films from Tim Burton will give you a clue what the film is about and how it will circle back to the beginning. A little bit of everything in this film, including deep philosophical questions will delightfully simple answers.
The Four Feathers (2002)
Saga in the Sands
Adventure, action, mystery and credit to Love and God throughout the film.
Deeper questions of duty to family, "God and Queen"..... even the repeated theme of giving your life for "X" as the greatest honor.
Not surprisingly, this film is a remake of a 1939 version, since the
Answers are still timelessly meaningful. Great acting by all, and amazing cinematography ensures the film is worth watching for many years to come.
