I am not a big fan of Angelina Jolie and never cared for the older movies, so I don't have the issue some reviewers seem to have about this being "not the real Lara Croft", which doesn't really make sense anyway. I've been a fan of the games since the very first one on the first Playstation. I really liked the recent reboots and I think this movie and this version of Lara Croft is perfectly in line with those newer games. The movie itself is great action-adventure, with good pacing, great visuals, and I think Alicia Vikander does a very good job with the character. Much better than the reviews led me to believe, I should have watched it years ago!
Echoing a lot of the reviewers, this is not as bad as the ratings or critics would suggest. But it's hard not to be disappointed when you consider all they had going on for them: big budget, great special effects team, big name actors, etc. These were all the elements to make a great action entertainment movie but it all ends up falling a little flat. The biggest issue is that it's not quite clear what audience they are targeting; the movie is a bit too grown up for kids, yet has too many silly/childish elements that feel out of place in the final result. All in all a decent time if you keep your expectations in check.
I saw it a long time ago and barely remembered it so I thought it was time to revisit it. I was afraid it might feel a bit dated as this type of movie usually relies on familiar tropes, which have been used and abused by now. But to my surprise it still feels pretty fresh and I think anyone younger person watching it for the first time would still enjoy it greatly. The cast is great, the plot fairly original and well-written, with great pacing that ties everything together nicely. And seeing such a young Kevin Bacon is a funny little extra! So all in all I still recommend it for anyone looking for a good thriller.
