30 Days of Night (2007)
One of the best vampire films
If you like your vampires bloody and exotic and monstrous, you will enjoy this film. The plot is a bit contrived, but it is also a superbly crafted piece of horror that gradually builds tension for the viewer. The dark and snowbound setting creates a hypnotic atmosphere for the story.
Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection (2012)
One bright spot in an otherwise badly made movie
Was the night drive scene featuring Sule Rimi going down dark country roads in a car that is running out of gas. It was actually quite creepy.
Parfum (2018)
Story would work better as a movie
I do not mind a slower paced feature, but the series format resulted in long stretches of no action punctuated by graphic violence. The ending, when it happened, was not recognized by me to be the actual ending due to this strange pacing.
Green Room (2015)
A good effort ruined by technical factors
This film has so much in favor of it- a fresh take on Indy pop horror featuring The DIY punk scene, a firmly grounded aethestic, gore for those who like gore, Patrick freaking Stewart, and a decent script. There may have been meaningful dialogue, but I couldn't hear it. There may have been fun punk Easter eggs in the background, but every scene was dimly lit to the point of muddiness. I streamed this on a high end PC with professional photographer monitor and speakers, to no avail.
American Experience: The Donner Party (1992)
A Modern Horror Classic
Ric Burns documentary is based on diaries, correspondence and historical photographs. The diary entries are read by a cast of famous actors to a haunting classical score to relate the horrific series of events that befell the Donner Party. The story is well known, but this film draws the viewer into the events on a very personal level. As a result, this documentary has become well known to fans of the horror film genre.
The Exorcist (2016)
Outstanding writing and casting
As a long time fan of the Exorcist films, I decided to keep an open mind regarding this series and was not disappointed. Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels tend to get most of the PR, but the entire cast is strong, and meaty roles are given to older women actors like Sharon Gless and Geena Davis. I also enjoyed the "slow burn" style of art direction where small visual details gain horrific importance over time. Watch the background! This is a worthy addition to the Exorcist Canon, and I hope more episodes are produced in future.
