Shadow and Bone (2021)
Excellent Storytelling
It is refreshing to see an epic series in the ranks of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones that does not rely on profane language to woo an audience. The acting is believable and you can see the everyday struggles of race and creed in the characters.
I have to admit that I couldn't really place the historical setting it was based on. The Fjerdan look medieval, the castles look Victorian, the streets of Ketterdam look like 20th century England, other towns look like Pre World War 2 Europe and there is a World War 1 machine gun somewhere in season 1.
I have to admit that the plot gets a bit convoluted at some point because there is no backstory to explain for example why the Shu and Suli are so despised but one only needs to look at the real world to figure that out. I hope Netflix is working on a season 3 or a prequel.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
A Legacy in the Making...
I have to admit the writing so far has been marvelous. The concept of starting this story almost twenty years after with so many questions of what, when and how to answer sets the stage for what looks like a very exciting Star Trek spinoff. I will definitely be watching
In the Long Run (2017)
Optimistic and Orignal
When I heard about the plot of this comedy I thought to myself "oh-oh here we go again" I was expecting an angry African family dealing with the trials of life in London laced with political undertones of discrimination etc. Boy was I wrong.. I have watched five episodes already and I can say that this is nostalgic humour thats optimistic and does not dwell on the short comings of the characters. The plot is so fast that the characters don't dwell on thier problems for you to feel sad for them. There is always a silver lining and there is no heavy political undertone and the setting in 1985 London takes it out of context from the whole BREXIT conundrum. The writing maybe cheesy and the characters almost stereotyped but the optimism in the face of social and racial tensions of today is brilliant.
Doctor Who (2005)
If it's not Broken Don't Fix it!
Jodi Whitaker is an excellent incarnation of the Doctor. She's young, witty, intelligent and optimistic and a good transition from Peter Capaldi who started his reign as a dowdy, unsure and cynical Doctor. But the writers seem to be throwing a timetested formula (possibly due to pressure from BBC to reinvent) for something that could spell doom for the Franchise. Firstly, the first four episodes which should have been invested as usual in narrating the personal turmoil the Doctor faces after regeneration has been cast aside to develop the characters of the companions. Three is crowd when it comes to companions. The chemistry between Tenant and Billi Piper, Capaldi and Coleman and Matt Smith with Karen Gillan thrives with a smaller cast. It's easier to see how the Doctor becomes a better person by learning from the companions with fewer companions. I hope the cast gets trimmed in the future. Secondly, rumour has it that there will be no Daleks, cyber men or Angels in this season... REALLY? What makes this the longest running sci-fi franchise is that both the Doctor and his/her villains reinvent themselves just as often as the Doctor regenerates. This also brings into light the lack of continuity so far in the first four episodes. Each episode seems to be a stand alone. What happened to the "Bad Wolf", "Silence will fall" crack in the wall themes that added mystery to each episode and connected every episode leading to a season ending revelation? Yes it's awesome to finally have a lady play the Doctor especially after the Master became Missy (Which I might add would be cool if Jodi's doctor meets Missy) but we shouldn't have to rewrite the Franchise on that account. I may be wrong in the long run but let's see how the season unravels. The season is young. Stay tuned folks.
Titans (2018)
DC Got It Right This Time
In less than five episodes DC has been able to narrate the origins of the star characters and set an intro to a spin off (In the Doom Patrol) worth looking forward to. Finally DC seems to tell a very original story with a very original cast while maintaining a sense of continuity. Awesome! Can't wait to see what this new dimension of the DC Universe brings.
