The Old Guard (2020)
It's Like They Re-Imagined 'The Highlander'
I loved this movie. It feels like the re-imagined 'The Highlander' storyline somewhat, but not in a derivative way. Just a different direction.
The story behind the immortal characters, and how the film explores the downside of immortality is super rewarding. Tackling the struggles of anonymity in an age of tracking and cameras being in everyone's pocket is cool, too.
Getting to see the newest immortal, Nile, come to awareness of her immortality was great. Her character, along with Andy, were two of my favorites.
If you liked the Highlander movies/TV show for the philosophical questions behind immortality in a mortal world, this film is for you.
Fear the Walking Dead: Follow Me (2022)
I 'fear' new episodes
This show ran off the rails when the nukes went off. Prior to that it was actually pretty good and was giving the flagship TWD a run for its money.
This episode was bad. I don't want to see more episodes after this.
Ted Lasso: Inverting the Pyramid of Success (2021)
Nate is the Devil
Not much spoiling here if you've seen the previous episode....but Nate is the devil, and I shall refer to him as Natan.
This episode was great. Ted opens up, and is transparent with everyone about his struggles. He faces those struggles amidst a pretty massive betrayal too.
Ted Lasso: Beard After Hours (2021)
What did I just watch??!
I've loved every episode of Ted Lasso. Until now. This was high-concept, low value filler.
This is not what I watch Ted Lasso for.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond: The Tyger and the Lamb (2020)
Saved by the Bell: The Zombie Years
I WANT to like this show. The premise is really interesting. The female leads are great too. But it just doesn't pop.
The show brings to mind elements of A Wrinkle In Time, and a little bit of Stand By Me . Except it lacks the magic that made those stories magical.
I don't feel invested in the characters AT ALL, and the show just falls flat. At this stage, I'm really just watching to learn more about the Commonwealth.
Designated Survivor: Suckers (2017)
So disappointing.
Season 1 of this show was amazing. Season 2 is flat. It's like they skipped ahead of all the great storylines and shifted ahead into a weak West Wing clone.
It's almost like the writers decided to capitalize on the descent of House of Cards and turn this into a political drama. Gone is the 'catch' of Designated Survivor. Now it's just formulaic political drama.
Gary Busey: Pet Judge (2020)
Is this for real?
Is this show for real? I'm really curious to know that. It seems too ridiculous to be true but it's funny.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Loved it.
This was such a good movie. I enjoyed it immensely. It has all of the themes that you've come to expect from the Star Wars series: friendship, redemption, and hope.
I did feel like the scenes with Leia were a bit long. And for Obvious reasons, the dialogue seemed with her seemed odd.
The story of Rey's family didn't disappoint. The old characters they brought back were perfectly timed.
Some purists may or may not like this movie but I love it.
Cobra Kai: Mercy (2018)
What happened to the show?
Spoilers Follow. Read with caution.
I found this episode to be a bit of a letdown compared to the first 7-8 episodes of the season. This show has an awesome premise - a 'where are they now' theme on a beloved 80's classic. The writers have done an awesome job up til now of making the show about the relationship of Daniel and Johnny - humanizing Johnny, almost making his character an anti-hero.
The last few episodes of the season have devolved into more of a teen soap opera. The kids are a critical part of the story, but the storylines are cheesy at times, and this episode pays the price for that.
The scene where Sam does her kick, symbolizing her return to karate was goofy and full of cliche.
And the finale's final scene was cringe-worthy; the character of Kreese - the ultimate one-dimensional movie bad guy - shows up at the end with an eye-rolling monologue, surfacing from the shadows chomping on a cigar. This is your cliffhanger?? Nooooo!!!!!! There were so many other great cliffs you could've hung this from - why bring this goober back??
I hope season 2 can right the course of the show by taking it back to what makes the show so interesting - the relationship between Daniel and Johnny.
