Wajib (2017)
Slow and boring
After hearing about the movie, I finally watched it... But it was so painful to watch because it reached the point of becoming boring. The idea is good, but the story and treatment were unsuccessful. The movie's pace is so slow it contributes to boring the spectator. And the ending leaves us hanging on. And frankly I wanted more...
Lady Bird (2017)
Not Oscar worthy
I finally saw Lady Bird and... I was not happy to discover that it is not Oscar worthy. The movie is nice, but it is no match to other movies competing in the Oscar race.
I, Tonya (2017)
Margot Robbie is terrific... But...
I am kind of lost: Margot Robbie's performance is outstanding. She clearly stepped out of her comfort zone. But, the movie bothered me. Or maybe it is not the movie, but actually the real unfortunate story of the main character who inspired this movie.
Capharnaüm (2018)
Emotional blackmail
The only thing right about this movie is its title. Otherwise, the scenario is weak (if existent), the technique is so-so and the story is just a compilation of all the stereotypes we could have about underprivileged people. It seems that the director and her co-screenwriters didn't even bother to live for few days with an underprivileged family to explore their reality. They just resorted to the easy way: compiling stereotypes and prejudices. And holding people accountable for their own poverty without any mention to the political and social system's failure. And I am really disappointed because I really liked Nadine's previous movies.
Regarding the actors (if we can call them actors), people thought they were fabulous. For me (and I am not belittling what they did, don't get me wrong), they were living their daily life in front of the camera. The greatness of an actor is measured by the way he could embody someone he is not.... And obviously that's not the case here.
The spectator is left lost in front of all the babel-like movie. If we don't like it, we think we're incapable of empathy. But we need to go beyond this self-guilt as spectators. Let's just evaluate it as a movie. That's how we will be able to escape the emotional blackmail it was built on.
P.S. Please watch Salam Bombay to understand my point of view.
