The Covenant (2006)
Would've been better as a TV show
The more I watch this film, the more I like it, but the more frustrated I get at the fact that they tried to put such a complex plot into a 90-minute film.
The way the film was marketed, I thought that the four brothers of Ipswich were the protagonists, but when I watched it I found that they weren't - Caleb was. I didn't have a problem with this, but when you watch a film, expecting it to be about four warlocks an it ends up being about the classic, good vs. evil with the pursuit of a hot girl as the subplot, it can disappoint you.
The film had a lot of potential, but because of the way it was told it lacked what it needed to turn it into a great film, or even a great cult film.
Kidulthood (2006)
Controversial and clever
My friends and I went to see this as part of the BBFC's film week with our media class and found ourselves somewhat surprised. Although none of the cast are particularly well-known actors, there was good chemistry between them and the story lines were believable and realistic.
Some people may find the film offensive with over 70+ uses of the "F" word and somewhat graphic violence, but if you look beyond this it is a film that I think everyone should see, if not just to get a glimpse into the reality of "Kidulthood" in 21st century England. It's not as great as you think...
Hex (2004)
Bring it back!
This show rocked. It had something for everyone, love, hate, lust, magic, good, evil you name it, it was in there. It was the kind of thing that appeals to anyone who watches it, as it had the perfect balance between the supernatural and the natural, with great story lines between each of the characters.
Each of the characters were typical sex-driven teenagers, but they were being driven into a world of magic without realising it, and it was done in a painfully addictive way. This said, the adults in the show also played an important part, and without them (Jez, Azazeal etc) the show wouldn't have worked.
There's only one thing I don't get: Why did they cancel it?!
Fantastic Four (2005)
Brilliant? No. Amazing? No. Fanastic? Yes.
I originally watched this show for one reason and one reason only: Julian McMahon. I had been a fan of his in Charmed, and I thought there was no harm in going to the cinemas to watch a film that I would not normally pay any interest to.
Little did I know that this film would become one of my favourites. The film boasts some of the best special effects I have seen in a long while (this coming from someone who constantly watches her favourite TV shows such as Charmed and picks fault. Ho hum) as well as some of the best casting (despite however much some people beg to differ).
I enjoyed the background storyline involving Reed and Susan, as well as the constant rivalry between Johnny and Ben.
Although many people criticise this film, saying that it is a load of *fill in the blank*, I beg to differ. It is based on a comic book, the same as Batman and Spiderman, the first comic to be created by Stan Lee, it's (second) film version (and the only one to be released) took the longest. Why? I'll let you be the judge of that...
Charmed (1998)
Charming
I have watched this show since it first aired in the UK back in 1998. Even then, and the age of eight, I found this show magical and hypnotising (with no pun intended).
The story of three sisters coping with their everyday lives is a classic, as many stories are these days, but as always, there is a twist. Their magical powers are linked to their sisterhood, and this is why many people began to criticise the show when their original oldest sister, Shannen Doherty, was fired.
However, I think that Rose McGowan did a wonderful job of filling Shannen's shoes as the new youngest sister, Paige Matthews.
This is a show that combines many elements of today's popular culture such as the supernatural, family, comedy and drama. It is a must watch for anyone and everyone.
Vampire Clan (2002)
Not the best...but not the worst...
I had spent months trying to find a copy of this film, only to find that it was no longer in production, only three years after it's release. Little did I know, that my friend had a copy that she purchased for 99p! (With an Arnold Schwarzenegger film...)
The film tells the story of Rod Ferrell, a Gothic teenager convinced that he is a vampire. Although the film is not correct in details about the characters - e.g. Rod's long hair and Dana's short hair - it's not a complete let down. Admittedly, I have seen better films, but there have been worse at the same time.
The gory aspects of the film, such as the corpses of Heather and Jeni's parents, were very good, as was some of the make-up. However, I think that casting could have been better, as I found some of the actors a bit tedious to watch for seventy minutes, despite how nice Drew Fuller looked wearing eyeliner.
