Hereditary (2018)
A fantastic horror film
Movie doesn't get much love from audiences, so I thought I'd chime in with some quick thoughts. This movie is incredible, but not for everyone. It definitely falls under the art-house category, although on the more conventional side (except for the last 10 minutes). The movie is a slow burn, and builds tension incredibly well through not only the weird stuff that happens, but the incredible sound design. Also, how could I not mention Toni Collete? She really didn't get enough love from the Oscars. As for flaws, there were a couple of scenes I found to be unintentionally funny, but those are short lived.
Overall, 9/10
Silent Hill 2 (2001)
Had to put my thoughts into words...
Wow, I adore this game. I just recently finished this game, but I think it may be my favorite game of all time. Whether it be through emulation, the PC edition with the enhanced mod, an old ps2, (anything but the HD Collection, really) I urge EVERYONE to play this game. A game that, on the surface, is an effective atmospheric horror game, has one of the best stories I've ever experienced. Filled to the brim with symbolism, as you walk through the town of Silent Hill, you begin to empathize with James, the main character, unsure if what you're seeing is actually real or a product of the imagination, while also becoming more and more detached as more is revealed. James is one of the most tragic characters I've ever seen, and as you continue through this story of pain, depression, and guilt, what originally was thought of as an ordinary man becomes increasingly dark and bleak. The ability to tell this depressing and complex tale so effectively with such a little amount of words is nothing short of an accomplishment. A story of pain, guilt, depression, and pain. Please pick this one up anyway you can, as long as it isn't the HD collection.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Offensive, Shallow, and Boring
Absolutely horrendous show. Not only does 13 Reasons Why fail in every aspect required to tell a compelling story, but it also happens to have one of the most offensive and ignorant representations of a serious issue ive ever seen. To get the obvious out of the way, this show is horribly written, with horrendous on-the-
-nose dialogue and cardboard characters. These afformentionrd "characters" have absolutely no depth beyond the mental illnesses they happen to have. The only character with some depth beyond that is Clay, but still, if you take away his relationship with Hannah, you have an absolute bore of a character, with absolutely no personality or charm. The only reason I'm giving this a 2 is because there is SOME Interesting camerawork, but it's in the vast minority of boring cinematography.
Now, to get to the real insult of this show, we have to look at its portrayal of mental illness. This show treats suicide as a revenge tactic. That in itself is the absolute worst thing a show about SUICIDE AWARENESS can ever do. By portraying such a topic in this way, it tells impressionable audiences who may be struggling with these thoughts that suicide is a viable way to get revenge on people who wronged them. This is only further pushed by how much this "plan" actually works in the show itself. The tapes start an absolute riot and an uprising against who wronged Hannah. I have no doubt this will push impressionable and vulnerable audiences further to this decision. Beyond that, the rest of the mental illnesses in the show feel as if they only exist to fill out a checklist. Every character has to have a specific mental illness that defines them, simply so the show can say that it "represents" these topics, no matter how absolutely horrendously it portrays them.
Overall, not only is this show comepletely inept in terms of quality and entertainment, but it remains a perfect example of how NOT to represent some of the most sensitive topics in modern society.
Overall, don't watch it.
