Foundation (2021)
Impressive start... and for the 1 star reviewers, listen to the podcast
Yes, the story has changed from this giant storyline that Asimov composed. But when I read the 1 star reviews from so-called fans of the cycle here, I get angry easily.
The first volume of the cycle was published in 1951. 70 years later, the world has changed. If the creators had completely adhered to the novel template, there would have been an all white male cast in the series.
If they were to listen to the podcast about the series, they would know that Asimov had spoken out before his death that he would write the circle differently afterwards.
So sentences like: Asimov would not have wanted the show like this are simply wrong.
Ted Lasso: Inverting the Pyramid of Success (2021)
A disappointing season finale after a great second season
The whole season was a huge bless to watch. Fantastically written with a great and unusual depth for a comedy. But what happened in the season finale?
Suddenly, some plot holes cheated their way in, which remained completely unanswered. For example, where did Nate's gray hair suddenly come from? Why didn't anyone react?
The reason why Nate betrayed Ted was rather inadequate. When Nate says Ted dropped him, that's a reason. But where exactly did Ted drop him? I never had the feeling that Ted or anyone else did it. Okay, it was Roy's employment as an assistant coach, maybe. But was it the turning point for Nate? It wasn't explained at at all, but it could have been explained just in one sentence. But that didn't happen.
And the time jumps at the end I found also rather disturbing.
Really a pity, because otherwise the entire season was a ten out of ten.
The Morning Show: It's Like the Flu (2021)
They've build a problem and have a hard time to get out of it
Now with the second episode, the big problem with The Morning Show shows. It's still entertaining and well-produced television, with a fabulous cast. But if you need two episodes to get all the pieces back on the chessboard, then you've done something wrong in story telling. In my opinion, the end of the first season has left a total mess that the first two episodes of the new season have destroyed the viewing pleasure. I hope it gets better!
Lupin (2021)
Pretty entertaining, but the writing...oh boy
The concept of the show is quite cleverly chosen. You can not deny that the show has a quite high narrative speed and the fact that Omar Sy has taken over the lead role saves the series completely.
Unfortunately, the whole writing is not convincing at all. Too many mistakes of logic have crept in. One has to be very surprised that the events are supposed to take place in December and that France still has late summer, to list one of the most serious mistakes here. And some of the events that are told doesn't make sense at all. After all, the whole plot with a new version of Lupin doesn't work out at all, because all of Omar's tricks are pretty underwhelming. A lot is left to chance and is effectively staged and thus tries to hide the countless weaknesses of the series. A pity.
Das letzte Wort (2020)
Feel good comedy about death and grief?
A typical German dramedy series, with the German icon Anke Engelke, who could be known especially in Europe as the host of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf. The series is not outstanding, but it has a lot of charm and deals with the subject of death and mourning with subtle humour. The special for those who see the English dubbing version, the main character is also dubbed by the leading actress Anke Engelke herself, who was born in Canada and grew up and lived there for some time.
Tenet (2020)
Entertaining, but too complicated
First of all: "Tenet" isn't the best Nolan movie, because the film has some weaknesses. But that's not because of Nolan's unique talent for making outstanding films. It's more because of the overambitious storyline, which is partly unfilmable. It was obscure in some scenes what you see. If the premise had varied a bit here and there, you could even let the story go through as a very fresh idea for a James Bond movie. For a Nolan film, it seems a bit strange. But in the end, it has to be said that such a story and this twist can only come from Nolan and the 155 minutes are already very entertaining, even if Kenneth Branagh is in my view a complete mismatch.
