Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Don't listen to the critics
A great example of why you shouldn't rely on critics. Had I listened to them, I would've missed out on one of my new favourite movies. Walking out of the theatre, I already wanted to watch it again so now I'm planning on buying the Blu-ray as soon as it gets released. Technically, it might have some flaws, but I can wholeheartedly say I fully enjoyed the movie from the very beginning to the end. And that's quite a compliment for a movie this long!
The acting is stunning and the casting is impressively done. Rami Malek is one of the best actors out there, in my opinion, and did Freddie Mercury justice. He did an excellent job at embodying the legend, and he's deserving of winning the Oscar that he is nominated for. There were plenty of moments during the film that I was in awe of him. All of the actors were great!
What they wanted to do with this movie was to honour Freddie and Queen, not making a full-on documentary about Freddie's life, as the critics "complained" about. I'm actually glad they didn't go down a dark path and instead focus on the highlights. But I'm also confused by how some critics think they shied away from the darker aspects of Mercury's life? I didn't feel like they did that at all. In fact, I think they handled it appropriately.
I'm happy with the soundtrack as well. I honestly wouldn't mind if it had been three hours long. Plus, the recreation of Live Aid is spot-on.
All in all, wonderful movie that made me happy and emotional, and gave me a bigger love for Queen. Ever since I saw the movie I've been listening to Queen songs on repeat.
Well-deserving of the awards and recognition it is getting, including Rami Malek who delivered a high-quality performance.
Buster's Mal Heart (2016)
Underrated
It's not the kind of movie that will leave you "speechless" of how amazing it was, but it is definitely underrated. If you're into these kinds of movies and like to be challenged mentally, this might just be for you. The storytelling is intriguing, wanting you to find out what happens in the end, and the acting (especially Rami Malek's performance) is nothing short of riveting. It is also confusing and makes you think, but I personally like that. I had to google it to read other people's interpretations because it's that kind of movie that'll stick a bit, and there are several ways you can interpret and analyze it. The best aspect of this movie is Rami's acting; he never disappoints. But I'd also like to give credit to the plot itself and director/writer, Sarah Adina Smith. I think it deserves a higher rating than it has so I'm gonna give it a 7/10. Give it a chance.
Mr. Robot (2015)
Highly recommended
Mr. Robot is, to put it simply, a brilliant series. You don't have to be a total tech-savvy in order to enjoy it and appreciate the marvellous storylines. The genius writing of the show is impressive (and its pretty much accurate portrayal of hacking) as well as the execution; the narration is intriguing, always leaving me wanting more at the end of an episode, and it never slows down. The interesting framing gives something unique to it, too.
The characters are well-rounded, three-dimensional; especially Elliot, the main character, is very well-written with the accurate portrayal of his mental illnesses and disorders. I believe I read somewhere that they had an actual psychiatrist read the scripts to get it all right.
The acting is superb and believable. Rami Malek, who plays Elliot, makes every monologue captivating with the way he speaks, which is the reason why the generous amount of voice-overs never feel "heavy" to me. That and the use of voice-overs works wonderfully in this show to get inside Elliot's mind.
Currently anticipating season 4 (which will also be the final season). Hopefully, it'll be as rewarding as the previous seasons. Kudos to the cast and crew!
Supernatural: Mint Condition (2018)
A fun episode
This is a very nostalgic episode, and I am SO happy that they continue to create episodes like these; a good mix of comedy and horror as well as funny interactions between the brothers. I really enjoyed it. I did feel like I needed a break from all the drama and the Michael-thing going on, even though I find it interesting, so this is a nice and fun "filler" episode. I hope there'll be more like these; perchance also ones including Castiel. That being said, I am intrigued to see what'll happen further ahead of the season with Michael and Dean, etc.
A Quiet Place (2018)
A Quiet Review
I'm not a huge fan of horror movies, but this one had my full attention. It's a very nerve-wracking experience and had me on edge. I really like the plot. I can't say I've ever watched a movie quite like this, so I gotta give them points for originality. The acting is amazing, too, so here's a bunch of kudos to the actors!
That being said, the writers have managed to completely miss some rational issues in the movie, as well the choices the characters make. First of all, I wondered why Emily Blunt's character, Evelyn, got pregnant while the monsters are still out there. Babies cry a lot, no shocker, so the risk of getting killed is immensely high. Not to mention the pain the pregnant mother must through, and she can't make a sound during the birth in order to survive. Probably not the best timing, just saying. However, maybe the writers had in mind that the pregnancy wasn't planned or something, but what do I know. Also, when she steps on that nail as she climbs up the stairs, why didn't she (or anyone, for that matter) remove it? I couldn't stop worrying if anyone else would eventually step on it. Then there's the corn field; how did they get the corn planted? And why didn't they try to soundproof the rooms so they could talk? I was also confused when John Krasinski's character and his son sits near the waterfall; if they're able to scream there without getting killed, why not spend more time at the place? And shouldn't the monsters be able to hear heavy breathing and such?
In spite of these remaining questions I have for the film, I still very much enjoyed it. After all, it is fiction, and I was entertained throughout the movie. So that's why I'm being generous with the stars.
Legion: Chapter 14 (2018)
A Strong Filler Episode
I absolutely loved season one of Legion, and as much as I wanted season two to be just as good, or even better, I can't say it is. I admit I enjoyed season one more than this season, but it doesn't mean I think season two is bad. This episode, however, I really liked. It's definitely one of my favourite episodes of this season thus far. I would call it a "filler" episode--but I don't mind great filler episodes! Also, I have to point out Dan Stevens' outstanding acting. His range is truly impressive.
Supernatural: Let the Good Times Roll (2018)
Anticipated episode
Was it the best season finale? No. That being said, however, I did enjoy the episode and I was very excited to see what was going to happen. I kinda saw it coming that Dean would become possessed by Michael in the end; Jensen Ackles talked about getting to portray another character for the first time, and a lot of people guessed Michael, including myself, since it would make the most sense. Don't get me wrong, I love Dean a whole damn lot, but it is intriguing to watch Ackles taking on another character, something we've never seen before. We've obviously seen him play Demon!Dean, but that was still Dean, just a "darker" version of him. I absolutely loved the ending scene with Michael/Dean as well as the wing scene. The fight scene, though ... it actually made me laugh. It was a bit cringe-worthy, to be frank. I expected more. But, all in all, an entertaining episode. I'm looking forward to season 14 and Ackles' outstanding acting!
I'm not a big fan of rating stuff, but I'm gonna go with a 8+ on this one. I couldn't give it a 9 or 10 because I feel like this episode could've been better with a more "decent" fight scene. It isn't my favourite episode either, but it's not bad. My favourite scenes were definitely the Michael!Dean ones.
Legion (2017)
It's confusing as hell, but I love it
I knew almost nothing about the show when I started watching it so I wasn't sure of what to expect. I was instantly enthralled by the outstanding visuals and sound design, as well the overall production of it all; not to forget the brilliant acting. Every episode is truly something on its own. Weird, strange, confusing, mind-blowing/mind-bending and captivating; I suppose these adjectives fit very well with the show in general.
Not only are the visuals, the sound design, the music, and the editing extraordinarily remarkable, the plots are interesting, too. And the fact that it's actually a Marvel show is almost unbelievable to me. It's nothing like the other Marvel TV-shows out there. This show is unique, and it's nothing like your typical or familiar superhero-story. Don't get me wrong, I like Marvel shows (as well as Marvel movies) but I find it so refreshing with a different take on a superhero show, and Legion serves just that.
This show is so damn confusing (at least a generous portion of it is) but I like it, and it's a part of what makes it stand out. I like thinking "what the hell is going on?" and at the same being entertained. This is why you might want to watch the episodes more than once, just to get a better grip on what is happening, as well as paying more attention to details you missed at first watch. Or do some research and read an explanation or synopsis of the episodes, like I do after watching.
Supernatural (2005)
The best supernatural TV-show
A few years ago, I watched the pilot episode and thought it's too horror-ish for me, so naturally (ironic choice of word) I didn't continue the show. However, a while after, I gave it another shot. And oh boy, am I glad I did!
I've watched a fair share of shows of all kinds of genres, but I'll have to say that this marks my top three. As the headline very subtly (note the sarcasm) gives away, I personally think Supernatural is the best TV-show about the supernatural out there thus far. Not only do I love the variety of genres and plots--the show's got a perfect balance of dark, funny and entertaining, at least in my opinion--I also really like the characters. The fact that it's on-going, with 13 seasons to this point, and I am still very much invested in the show, must be something quite special. It's one of those shows I find extremely hard to stop watching, and I've even rewatched a great handful of episodes--some more than twice. I would also like to point out the brilliant acting in the show, as well as how incredibly well the main characters, Sam and Dean, are played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.
