Inheritance (2006)
Haunting story of survival
This is an amazing story of two very powerful and proud women. One who survived the holocaust as a victim, the other brandished a victim by her patronage. The story revolves around two women meeting for the first time, one a survivor of a concentration camp, the other the daughter of the commandant of the camp, amon goeth. It begs the question: are we responsible for our father's mistakes? It's hard to imagine the courage both women would have to convey in order to meet each other but they both do brilliantly. I would definitely recommend a viewing, if for nothing else, for the amazing composure of these women who prove tolerance knows no bounds.
Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996)
guilty or not, talk about the movie.
Even though I felt that this documentary was well produced I had some serious problems with some of the subject matter. The little boys should have always been the main focus but it almost seemed like they were props. They were very rarely discussed in any other situation than the murder and I thought that did an injustice to their memory. The murder of an innocent, in my opinion is one of the most unforgivable crimes one can commit.
That being said, I will not voice my opinion on their guilt or innocence on a movie site but I will say that their trial was a sham.... Give me a break. Besides other things and I won't go into too much detail: The cops mysteriously losing evidence, not having any physical evidence to place them at the scene or having a motive, other than the satanic cult ritual theory; which has to be debunked because they couldn't prove any of them were satanists(I know someone will probably say something and no wiccan is not satanism).
I think the true injustice is that IF these teens didn't murder those poor little boys the horrific murderers who did will be walking free forever and 3 Innocent kids and 6 Innocent families have to suffer, the boys who were murdered and the kids who were convicted of it. I'm not saying that they are Innocent but don't those men at least deserve a competent trial and legal defense? Those who argue they are guilty, what is another trial gonna do? If they are guilty they'll just go back to jail and if they're not maybe the real killers can be brought to justice.
Overall I found this movie was an emotional one, and hard to watch, but for someone who has no previous knowledge of the case, like I was, it's worth watching and considering. There's one last thing as a mom I have to say; God rest those poor little boys.
Exposing the DaVinci Code (2005)
If you have half an objective mind, watch something else.
Let me begin by saying that religion will always be a questionable subject for some people, myself included. I personally have struggled with faith all my life. I consider myself a relatively intelligent, open minded person but am infuriated after seeing this movie. It attacks Dan Brown for writing a book he believes is historically accurate. Do I think every theory in Dan Brown's book is correct? No, I wanted to watch this special based on the fact that I am open to interpretation and wanted an objective rebuttal to the book. I never expected to be preached to about the historic value of the bible and its religious implications.
The church has publicly documented that the bible is a collaboration of religious and historical theology as practiced by early catholics. Most catholics believe the bible is the word of god. This is a problem for me. In my objective opinion it's the word of man. Men wrote the documents, Men put the documents together, Men distributed documents as a religious text and preached the contents as gospel. Did God inspire the men to write, There's no way to prove or disprove that theory. Is it fallible, of course, Man Wrote It.
This documentary uses the bible as it's evidential proof to disprove Dan Brown. That's the real problem I have with this movie. Every statement the experts made were then referred back to the bible as proof. The only historic evidence they give is on some of Leonardo Divinci's work, what little they do provide. I thought this movie would be more objective, religious, but objective. They even provided scripture as "proof."
I think that everyone should be able to believe what they want to. Catholics should able to believe in god and the bible. I personally think it's wonderful to have unfaltering faith. I just wish they wouldn't try to convince me it's a historical text. This movie is perfect for a devout catholic who needs reassuring that The Divinci Code is a work of fiction. For the rest of us, we don't need convincing. Dan Brown might believe everything he wrote, but as most people that I know who read the book, including myself, realize it's no more infallible than the bible itself. It's just a darn good book....
