Mr. Pip (2012)
Very sensitive story
I think this movie about the transformation of ordinary South Pacific girl through a Charles Dickens novel is moving and touching in a non sentimental way. Matilda is well portrayed, as is Mr. Watts. Seeing Matilda awaken through the story and seeing Mr. Watts as much more than the lout thought by the original Mrs. Watts is a wonderful thing. Well worth your time and you may come away with your soul a little more full.
White Bird in a Blizzard (2014)
A bit boggy at times
I like the premise of this story, I like the subtle back story telling, I didn't like the depiction of Cat's casual promiscuity and the nudity was a bit gratuitous. The so-called plot twist at the end is not in keeping with the story. To start, the wife is obviously unsatisfied with their sex life, but since she is an emasculating bitch, it's not surprising her husband is unable to rectify that situation. He does exhibit upset when she dallies with a neighbor and has enough mojo to jerk off to a Hustler magazine. Cat and her boyfriend are very interested in each other and the sudden ghosting goes along with the wife's overt behaviour towards the boyfriend. The twist comes when we see the husband and the boyfriend in bed and that's when the husband kills the wife? Again, there is virtually nothing that points in that direction, it would be more sensible keep with the story line already presented. I think the insertion of homosexuality is just bizarre and spoils the movie. The Mrs. Robinson aspect makes more sense and is more true to life.
Cargo (2017)
Fantastic example of human love
Great story, well done without being too gory. The theme is a father's love and the lengths a father would go to for the sake of his daughter, plus the human experience of another father's sacrifice to save his family from a terrible death. Well worth your time!
Novitiate (2017)
More Catholic bashing fun
This film could have been so much more, it could have been The Nun's Story, except it was made in the same vein as any other Horror of the Catholic Church movie. So many obvious fallacies, where to begin? Oh yes, how about NO unbaptized girl would be admitted to any convent. No nun who was enduring a crisis of faith would be the Novice Mistress. No Mother Superior would viciously crush a postulant for breaking Grand Silence a few seconds early. No obviously insane Mother Superior would hold her office as long as it took to scream the house down, much less take on the formation of postulants. Professed nuns would not be afflicted with the company of unformed girls, nor would they titter with amusement over the antics of a sister who suffers from dementia. I do not see any deathly ill person rising from her sickbed to engage in wild lesbianism because her friend held her hand for a few minutes. All this movie manages to convey is how rabid, dark and perverse is the mind of Protestantism. It's no different than the Maria Monk nonsense of the last century. I did like the mother-daughter story line, I am sure it is agony to see your daughter leave your world, at least that part seemed true to life. Don't waste your time, unless you like anti-Catholic porn.
