Invincible: I Thought You Were Stronger (2024)
Amazing Finale, But Slightly Unsatisfactory
This episode is objectively an amazing Season Finale, with fantastic animation, cool action, great emotional moments, and amazing writing. I will admit, though, that it did leave me rather unsatisfied. They didn't do nearly as much with the concept of the Multiverse as they could've, it wasn't as jaw-dropping as the finale of Season 1, and didn't feature *that* character that I know a lot of comic fans (myself included) were very excited to see
It is a fantastic episode and sets-up a great Season 3, but there's a lot that could've been done way better!
Here's to hoping that Season 3 is worth the wait!
Echo (2023)
Way Better Than Expected
Although I'm not sure if I'd say it's good, Marvel Studios' Echo was a huge surprise! I really disliked the character of Maya when she appeared in Marvel Studios' Hawkeye back in 2021, so when it was announced she'd get her own spinoff series, I was very much *not* excited. But, it surpassed my expectations!
For the most part, it's a solid series with good characters, great action and an alright story. My biggest problems, though, stem from the inconsistent tone (sometimes it wanted to be very serious like Marvel's Daredevil, and at other points it wanted to be way more dramatic and exciting like other MCU shows), the meh script, the predictability of the story, the bad finale and the messy pacing throughout.
It's definitely way better than I thought it would be, though! Maya went from being a character I hated to being one that I actually quite like, Vincent D'Onofrio was fantastic as Kingpin, and it was great to see Charlie Cox back in the red and black Daredevil suit!
It's worth a watch if you were a fan of the Netflix Daredevil series because it's one of the best things to come from the MCU in a couple years!
Echo: Taloa (2024)
The King Is Back!
The highlight of this episode is quite easily Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk. He was such a sinister and attention-demanding presence as he gives one of the best performances in any live-action superhero project. His take on Kingpin in Marvel's Daredevil is a fan favourite, and it's incredible to see him back!
'Taloa' is a really good penultimate episode to Marvel Studios' Echo. It's nothing outstanding and I definitely have my problems with the story, but the characters, performances from the cast, the action and the soundtrack are all solid!
Aside from some issues with the story, pacing and script, it's been a really solid show! Hopefully the Series Finale is worth it!
Echo: Tuklo (2024)
A Significant Improvement
Episode 3 of Marvel Studios' Echo is a significant improvement over the first two. Although it's not exactly great so far, on the whole, it's miles better than most of what we've gotten in the last few years (not only looking at Marvel Studios, but the comicbook movie industry on the whole).
It's quite predictable, but it's telling a good, short story with interesting characters and unique stakes. The action is great and overall, it's shaping-up to be way better than I ever expected!
Back when it was first announced, I was questioning if I'd even watch it, but here I am on Day One binging it and actually enjoying it! Hopefully the next two episodes of the series can be as good as this one!
Echo: Lowak (2023)
Overdramatic
Although it's a solid second episode, 'Lowak' just seems to try too hard and doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. Does it want to be as serious and gritty as Netflix's Defenders Saga, or does it want to be the epic spectacle most MCU content is supposed to be?
Alaqua Cox is doing a fantastic job portraying Maya and this series has so much potential to bring another dimension to live-action Marvel that has been relatively unexplored since The Defenders Saga and Agents Of SHIELD were cancelled.
That said, even though the script is solid, something just feels off. It's no where near as bad as Secret Invasion, but it's just not the dark and thrilling adventure it could've been.
Echo: Chafa (2023)
Turning Back The Clock
This was a solid first episode to the series. Although most of it goes over Maya's backstory and retells the story told in Marvel Studios' Hawkeye for the people that haven't seen it (or maybe can't remember about the character over two years after that series released), it's pretty good! It expands on Maya's character in a way Hawkeye never did, shows the triumphant return of Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk and sets-up the rest of the series very nicely
One of the key points with this episode is that it's much darker and more violent than anything else we've gotten in the MCU. It very much reminds me of watching the Defenders Saga on Netflix in the mid-late 2010s, and it's exactly the gritty and street-level content the MCU has desperately needed for some time now!
Blue Eye Samurai (2023)
Netflix's Best Series In A While
Blue Eye Samurai is pure art. It's an incredibly well animated series set in 17th century Japan with a number of great characters and arcs, a story that spans eight epic, yet heartfelt, episodes (so far), an amazing cast of voice actors, and a beautiful soundtrack. All of this comes together to provide an incredible experience that pays homage to iconic samurai classics like Seven Samurai and Harakiri!
It is breathtaking from beginning to end, and is undoubtedly one of the best Netflix original series in a while! I'm very hopeful for a Season 2, as the characters' journeys are very much unfinished by the time Episode Eight ends (although it does mostly provide a nice sense of closure in the event that it doesn't receive the viewership Netflix desires)
The Marvels (2023)
Spectacular Embarrassment
Going from the Loki Series Finale this morning to The Marvels this evening was (for lack of a better word) bonkers! The finale was perfect, and a beautiful ending to the show, while The Marvels is a complete mess. It's honestly given me whiplash
The Marvels is just an all-around bad movie. The script is awful and the story is super rushed and poorly executed, which both have an impact on how well the characters (and in-turn the actors) come-across on-screen
The action and humour are kind of alright, and the VFX are definitely better than anything we've seen in an MCU project since Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (with the obvious exceptions of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 and Loki Season 2), but that still doesn't exactly make it look great
This movie is just painful to watch at points! Early on, it has some really fun moments, and felt like it could have actually been somewhat entertaining, but that feeling vanished as soon as it came. It's barley better than Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, so you can do with that information what you will.
Loki: Glorious Purpose (2023)
Glorious Ending
Here we are. After two great seasons, Marvel Studios' Loki has seemingly come to an end... And it's beautiful
This episode, almost an hour in length, provides us with possibly the best episode in Marvel television. It gives an incredible conclusion to the series, and the stories and characters within it
I'm honestly feeling lost for words after finishing it. It's just a perfect episode that's amazing in aspects all across the board, and puts the rest of recent MCU media to shame
In contrast to the majority of Phases 4 & 5, this episode left you with a lot to think about, and I really hope the responses this series has had from fans motivates the Studio to do better
Perfect ending to a fantastic show. This is art.
Loki: Science/Fiction (2023)
Almost There...!
This was a great penultimate episode to the season! It's exciting, mind-blowing, awesome, and just everything the show is all about! It has beautifully set-up the Season Finale, and was one epic and emotional ride, not missing a single beat after Episode 4's jaw-dropping cliffhanger ending!
At its core, this episode is intimate. Although the story is, of course, very large-scale, it has a heavy focus on the characters, and relationships between them. There are many moments that pull on the heartstrings, and I'm genuinely so excited for the final episode of Season 2
Going into this episode, I didn't know where they were going to the story, but it was a great choice by the writers and creative team! Regardless of how the finale is, this season had been great!
Loki: Heart of the TVA (2023)
Intense & Jaw-Dropping!
Season 2 Episode 4 of Loki is easily one of the most intense episodes we've gotten in an MCU TV series. It's going to be difficult to talk about it without spoiling anything... But I'm going to try!
This episode was just breathtaking. It was incredibly well-made, with an awesome script, fantastic visuals and great performances. One of the things that I love the most about this series are the deep philosophical conversations, and this episode nails it in that area!
Honestly, I was very concerned for this episode. I wasn't the biggest fan of Episode 3, and critics' reviews for the first four episodes have been very mixed, so I assumed that after the great first couple episodes, Episodes 3 & 4 would be the ones the dragged the ratings down. Fortunately, I was very much wrong, and this is easily one of the best episodes in Marvel television, and alongside the Season Premiere, it cements Loki Season 2 as one of the best pieces of superhero content we've gotten since Avengers: Endgame back in 2019!
Loki: 1893 (2023)
Underwhelming
Although it's a solid episode, it might be my least favourite in the entire series so far. It continues the story very nicely and definitely isn't a bad episode by any means, but it's just not that good (if that makes any sense).
I'm trying to say that I've not really got many issues with it (except for a few historical inaccuracies), but it's not a great episode. It was very fun and intriguing, however, to see the plot progress, and to see what came of Ravonna's Season 1 ending, which has gone unexplained up until this point.
I'm very excited to see what comes next, and don't take my below-average rating as me not really enjoying this season so far!
Rick and Morty: How Poopy Got His Poop Back (2023)
Poor Execution
This had everything it should have needed to make a good episode. Rick gets-together a bunch of friends to hold an intervention for Mr PBH, but leads to a crazy night of fun, adventures and guest appearances. Unfortunately, aside from a handful of jokes, it just wasn't good. The concept of the episode was honestly just so great, and feels like what classic Rick & Morty episodes were, but it's just done quite poorly, and wound-up being one of the worst episodes of the series
I love the new voices of Rick and Morty, though! We didn't hear much of Morty in this episode (though he sounded great in the trailer), five minutes into the episode, the knowledge that Rick had a different voice actor went completely to the back of my mind. The new actor did such a great job, and I did completely forget about the change.
Loki: Breaking Brad (2023)
Not The Show's Best
Honestly, it's probably one of the worst episodes (if not THE worst) in the series so far. That's not to say it's not great, though! It's intriguing, and continues the story very nicely, with some awesome action and visuals effects!
The sole purpose of this episode was just to move the story forward. I'm not going to go into any specifics to avoid any spoilers, but it just felt like an episode that needed to happen in order for the rest of the season to be able happen.
Overall, it just wasn't anything special, which is a little disappointing considering how amazing most of the show is. Still a pretty great episode, though, that's probably better than anything we got in Secret Invasion!
Loki: Ouroboros (2023)
Starting With A Bang!
A lot of critic review dropped earlier in the week, and they got me very nervous for how it was going to be. Because of the mixed response from critics, I went in with honestly quite low expectations, but the season premiere absolutely blew me away
It's been over two years since Loki Season 1, and it's so amazing to be able to jump right back in as if there's not been that time difference! It picks-up right where the Season 1 finale left-off, and keeps the momentum going in such a fantastic way!
The writing is fantastic, the visuals are stunning (which is a huge surprise given how they've been in other recent Marvel projects), the chemistry between the actors is great, and it was all-around such an incredible start to what I'm hoping will be a great season!
Ahsoka (2023)
Fan service at its absolute BEST
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the Star Wars franchise ever since Disney acquired it, and especially after the unsatisfactory second and third installments of the disappointing Sequel Trilogy. Hope for the franchise returned, though, with the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, and the climactic final season of The Clone Wars. Recently, however, content hasn't been nearly at that level.
Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book Of Boba Fett were opportunities to put the spotlight on fan favourite characters, expanding on the characters and the journeys that they've been on without them sharing the screen with other characters. Unfortunately, the were low-quality, anticlimactic, felt unloyal to the characters and stories George Lucas created, and relied on failed attempts of fan service to keep viewers engaged. The Mandalorian Season 3 was no different, and both seasons of The Bad Batch were ran mostly by filler.
The only pieces of Star Wars media to really grasp the interest of the audience since the Siege Of Mandalore and finale of The Mandalorian Season 2 have been Andor and Tales Of The Jedi. A lot of pressure was naturally placed on Ahsoka to join them, especially with it being the long-awaited Ahsoka Tano solo project, and also the highly anticipated follow-up to the series finale of Rebels, which came around half a decade ago!
So... Does it meet those expectations?
The series brought so many characters from animated content like Clone Wars and Rebels beautifully to life, was filled with service for fans of those shows, and the overall Saga (that I'll add didn't feel forced, and actually worked well with the story), contained good visuals, a decent script, a fantastic soundtrack, some amazing characters (old and new), and great action choreography!
The story also does something never before seen in Star Wars history (including Legends), looking beyond the only galaxy we've gotten to see in the franchise up until now.
The series just did so much right! Now, although it's not one of the all-time best pieces of Star Wars content, it's definitely one of the best things we've gotten from the franchise since Rebels ended! It delivered in so many areas, having stuff for everyone in the fanbase to love!
Ahsoka: Part Eight: The Jedi, the Witch and the Warlord (2023)
Better Than Expected
Every week I've said that the show has been great, but also that I've been nervous for the finale. A lot of Disney+ show finales (Star Wars and Marvel alike) have been of a... Let's say lower quality. And after the underwhelming finales of The Book Of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian Season 3, it made me very much anxious about the Ahsoka finale, especially after last week's episode left so much for the finale to do in a 45 minute runtime!
Fortunately, I was wrong. This finale was great and surpassed the honestly quite low expectations I had for it. It was fun, had some great fan service, an awesome soundtrack, and some fantastic lightsaber combat. That stuff aside, though, it's not an amazing ending. Some parts felt kind of corny, but it provided a solid ending to the series (or at least the season), and beautifully set-up whatever comes next in the 'Filoniverse' (which, for those who aren't huge Star Wars fans, is the name given to the side of the Star Wars universe that collects shows like The Mandalorian, The Book Of Boba Fett and Ahsoka).
Ahsoka: Part Seven: Dreams and Madness (2023)
Underwhelming
Honestly, for the penultimate episode of the show (or at least the season - depending on whether or not it gets renewed for a second season), and after the super high quality of the last few episodes, this was a little bit disappointing. Although it was still pretty solid, with great action and visuals, I'm not the hugest fan of how it was written, and it leaves a lot for the finale to do.
With complete honesty, I'm very concerned about how much needs to be wrapped-up in the finale, and how it could feel rushed, like a lot of other Disney+ finales. Between Marvel Studios' WandaVision and The Book Of Boba Fett (and The Mandalorian Season 3), there haven't been a ton of great finales. Really hoping that the same doesn't happen here, especially after how awesome most of the show has been!
The Continental: Brothers in Arms (2023)
A Great Start
This really surprised me. I didn't know what to expect going in, and I didn't have very high hopes for it. Fortunately, though, it's a great start to the 3-part limited series!
It introduces the characters, establishes the story, and sets the scene for the entire event. The action is also pretty great! It's not exactly on the same level as the John Wick movies, but it's really solid, especially for a TV show!
Gibson, Prada and Robson are great as Cormac, KD and Frankie, respectively, but my main point of focus here is on Winston and Charon. The two characters are beautifully brought back to life with great writing, and amazing performances by Woodell and Adegun! They feel exactly like the characters from the films, and I have huge respect for achieving that!
It's a really great way to start the event, and I'm very excited to see what parts 2 & 3 have in store.
Ahsoka: Part Six: Far, Far Away (2023)
Fan service at it's purest
This show continues to surprise me each week, giving us great episodes with great visuals, a great soundtrack, great action, great characters, and a great story & script. But where this series excels the most... Is the fan service!
It's turning-out to be one of the best pieces of Star Wars media that we've gotten in a long time, being great from a technical perspective, while appealing to the fans of the franchise, and the stories and characters inside of it. And one of the best things about it is that it all feels natural. A lot of attempted fan service in recent movies and shows (looking at cinema and TV on the whole here) features actors or characters that feel unnecessary and forced-in. But, the Ahsoka series manages to properly execute the fan service, while having it feel natural with the story.
It's just such an incredible way to take the journey set-up by the finale of Rebels, half a decade ago!
Ahsoka: Part Five: Shadow Warrior (2023)
Feels Like A Dream
This episode meant so much to me as somebody that grew-up with The Clone Wars, and who loves Rebels (despite some not-great episodes). Its difficult to talk about without going into spoilers, so I'm going to try and focus on the technical side of things, and the show as a whole.
The visuals were great (CGI de-aging at some of its finest), fantastic performances, really good writing, an awesome soundtrack, good choreography, and it is almost an hour of purely ecstatic fan service (which is absolutely not a bad thing!).
We now have three episodes left in the show, and although I'm scared it's going to have the same problems as a lot of other Marvel / Star Wars series finales, it's been an awesome ride, and really hope the writers keep it up getting into the end of the season.
Ahsoka: Part Four: Fallen Jedi (2023)
The Best Star Wars Television In Years
This was definitely one of the best pieces of Star Wars television since the series finale of The Clone Wars. It's got amazing action, awesome performances, a great script, a fantastic soundtrack, and I absolutely love what it's doing with the characters; old and new!
I'm especially loving the character of Baylan! Ray Stevenson was absolutely incredible in the role, and the character is so well written. So far, he's turning-out to be one of my favourite antagonists in the Star Wars Universe
We're also half-way through this series (or at least the season), now, and I'm feeling quite confident about it, which is something I've not said about any Disney+ shows in a while. It's a really great change of pace after a lot of underwhelming Star Wars and Marvel projects on the platform.
Ahsoka: Part Three: Time to Fly (2023)
Mixed Thoughts...
This episode was a mixed bag, and how good it was seemed to change from scene to scene. One minute, it was a fun space battle reminiscent of those in the Original Trilogy, and the next, Ahsoka is standing on the hull of the ship deflecting fire that surely should've breached the aforementioned hull.
Overall, this episode probably deserves a 6.5/10 rating. That seems fair, since some scenes were pretty great, and others kind of sucked. It was mildly entertaining, but could've been done in fifteen minutes, and should've been combined with the contents of the next episode. I feel as though that would've been a much better way to do it.
Ahsoka: Part Two: Toil and Trouble (2023)
Family Reunion - And Farewell
Going into the first episode, I was very anxious about how this series would follow-on from the Rebels finale, which is one of my favourite episodes in TV animation. Fortunately, it's not disappointed me yet, and these first two episodes have been really great, faithfully continuing the story and characters from Rebels. If the rest of the series follow-suit, this could honestly wind-up being one of the best things we've gotten from Star Wars in a while!
The action was great, the story was great, the characters are great, the visuals are great... And just everything about this episode was great. Can't wait to see how the series continues!
Ahsoka: Part One: Master and Apprentice (2023)
Return Of The True Jedi
I didn't get around to watching Rebels Season 4 until late 2019, but I made sure to watch it before The Rise Of Skywalker, which was supposed to Canonically end the Skywalker Saga. Although I was late to the party, that show's finale wound-up being one of my favourite episodes in Star Wars television, and I won't deny that it made me cry to watch the first time around. Four years later (and over five years after it's release), we finally have the follow-up to that incredible closing scene, with Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren gearing-up to find Ezra!
This Series Premiere did not disappoint. I was very concerned that it was going to be like Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion, Obi-Wan Kenobi or The Mandalorian Season 3 where its just not as great as it should have been, especially after such a long wait and huge hype train. Fortunately, it's not seeming to be the case (at least not yet). This was a very fun and intriguing start to the story, and I can't wait to see how things progress from here!
