Marius et Jeannette (1997)
Real Life love, not Hollywood Syrup
This film is how life should be portrayed. Those raised on a diet of Hollywood love stories where everyone has a new car, large house and unfeasibly white teeth will find this slice of Gallic realism a bit overpowering. Those of us who prefer our cinema with a bit of bite can appreciate the predicament the two leading characters are in and we can rally for them. A honest heartwarming film that moves at a slow pace (but then who meets a girl, falls in love, befriends her children and lives happily ever after in 97 minutes. I was lucky enough to buy this as a withdrawn VHS from my local library and I prize it as one of the 'top drawer' films in my film collection.
Sahara (1995)
A unknown little gem
I am ashamed to say as an ardent film fan I have not seen the original starring Humphrey Bogart. I do however have the luxury of being able to judge this film with an unbiased view. I didn't even realise it was a TV film until I saw the details on the IMDb site. Belushi gives a creditable performance but I think all the characters gel together well and the film carries a certain aura of the old British 40's and 50's war films such as Ice cold in Alex though obviously not in the same league. The characters are doomed and yet you feel for them. At the end as the camera pans across the line of makeshift rifle tombstones and Belushi recites the fourth paragraph of Laurence Binyon's 'The Fallen' you realise that you are not only at the end of a quite good film but also you owe a great debt to the fallen heroes of yesteryear.
Crime Spree (2003)
cest-magnifique
How hard are some people to please? I purchased this film ex-rental and consider myself lucky as it was never released for sale in the UK. As a lifelong lover of French cinema and someone who enjoys comedy I can honestly say this film is hilarious. If you can't appreciate the humour you must have had your funny bone removed. The characters are almost caricatures of themselves and it is an offence to buffoons to call them buffoons but in the same vein as the Great Laurel and Hardy you love them all the more. Loaded with in-jokes poking fun at several cultures it is a feel-good comedy that I could watch again and again, I know, I have.
