Music (2021)
Music: A Symphony of Love and Understanding
As someone who typically steers clear of musicals, with exceptions only for classics like "Singing in the Rain" and "The Sound of Music," Sia's "Music" took me by surprise in the most unexpected ways. This film is a masterpiece that transcends genres, delivering a powerful message of compassion and understanding.
At the heart of "Music" is Maddie Ziegler's breathtaking portrayal of the titular character. Ziegler's performance as a non-verbal autistic girl is nothing short of extraordinary. Despite initial concerns about potentially being accused of mocking autistic individuals, Ziegler's dedication to the role shines through in every scene, adding depth and authenticity to the character and elevating the film to new heights.
Sia's foresight in casting Kate Hudson in a pivotal role pays off immensely. Hudson demonstrates both dedication and talent through her exceptional acting, breathtaking singing, and her courageous decision to shave her head (a poignant symbol of commitment from a woman known for her beauty).
Right from the start, "Music" establishes that it's not about mocking or belittling those with special needs; rather, it's about building a bridge of love and empathy between different worlds. As someone on the autistic spectrum herself, Sia brings a personal touch to the film, adding a layer of complexity that sparks both admiration and debate among audiences. Initially, Sia attempted to work with autistic individuals for the role, but encountered significant challenges. Her decision to cast Maddie Ziegler, while controversial, proved to be a stroke of genius.
However, beyond its surface, "Music" serves as a mirror, reflecting back the biases and prejudices of its viewers. Perhaps it's discomforting for some to confront their own preconceptions, leading them to project their discomfort onto the filmmakers. In truth, Sia's vision and execution deserve commendation.
In conclusion, "Music" is not just another musical; it's a symphony of love and understanding. Maddie Ziegler's remarkable performance as the titular character makes this film a true standout, a masterpiece that will echo in your heart long after the credits roll.
Viper Club (2018)
Probably the most underrated movie of 2018.
This movie is not just the story of a mother. It's much more than that. It's about human connection. We all need to realize that what for us is a mere statistic, for others is everything.
On the Beach (1959)
THERE IS STILL TIME . . BROTHER
I watched this movie because Christopher Hitchens mentioned it at the inauguration of the Festival of Dangerous Ideas. The movie is a bit dragged-out but its black-and-white cinematography and Ava Gardner's stellar performance more than make up for it.
