Ghost of Tsushima (2020)
The pinnacle of digital art and programming
I've been playing computer games since the 80s and there are few titles I've missed. So I believe my playing experience gives extra weight to this brief review of this masterpiece.
The Ghost of Tsushima is a game that is probably closest to perfection in the gaming world. There is not a single aspect of the game that is not great! The story is compelling, feels real, impressive and emotional. The characters are strong and memorable, nothing is done superficially. Also, the learing curve is just right, you can really enjoy the game, there is no frustration. All the decisions made by the authors were correct, sometimes there is no need to be too "real" and consistent if it will make parts of the game slower or boring. This game has the perfect balance in that. And I think that's terribly important.
The characters, objects and surroundings are incredibly detailed and convincing, everything is done with great care. You can just wander the landscape for hours just enjoying the open world of Tsushima island. The music and sound effects are amazing, I play the game on a powerful multichannel surround system and the player through the sounds can really immerse into the world of ancient Japan.
There is so much you can do, explore and achieve that you can enjoy this game for months. The photo mode that the game offers is the best I have ever seen and it simply invites you to perform fantastic screenshots. It is a special pleasure not to rush through this game. I rarely gallop a horse, preferring to slowly enjoy every detail of the landscape and great story.
I try to remember some flaw, but I don't find it. It's also amazing that in such a big game and all these months of playing I haven't come across a single bug. In my opinion, without much discussion, Ghost of Tsushima enters the top five games ever.
And an important tip for the end: to enjoy the game and its authenticity as much as possible, be sure to set the language to Japanese with subtitles. Trust me, the difference in the impression of the characters and the whole story is huge.
Thank you Sucker Punch for such an amazing journey!
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
One of the best Star Wars stories ever
Sensational! For a moment I was a child again. They pushed all the right buttons. It's so cool and never pretentious. The whole season was amazing, but the end is really perfect. Every single piece of a good old Star Wars fun and emotion was there. I bow to the whole team who produced this. Star Wars universe is saved. And I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that the Mandalorian is the best thing that happened in not-so-happy 2020. Thank you!
Dix pour cent (2015)
Dynamic, classy and witty show!
What a great surprise this series is; there is no violence, murders, guns and still it's so dynamic! It has everything: talented writing, complex characters, great acting, good humor and flawless directing. It's so enjoyable, never boring and often full of unexpected turns. After so many generic Hollywood series Dix pour Cent was such great pleasure to watch. Highly recommended for connoisseurs!
The Mandalorian: Chapter 8: Redemption (2019)
All that The Rise of the Skywalker should be
The last episode of The Mandalorian concludes this brilliant series in most satisfying way. It's hard not to compare this already epic series with the last Star Wars movie failure. The Mandalorian has it all: vibrant storytelling, tension, suspense, great editing and rhythm and, most importantly, the characters that you can connect with. I was on the edge of my seat so many times during The Mandalorian that the last Star Wars movie feels like some generic fast-food-movie-making instead of an original saga ending. For me, this is the real Star Wars, it's so enjoyable and done with great care and love. This is the way!
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Like a two hour long trailer for some epic saga
I am a life long Star Wars fan and this was the first time I came out disappointed. And I am not picky, I was mostly happy even with the last two movies, but this one is the worst Star Wars movie yet.
It's hollow, unnecessary hectic, without soul and the good old Star Wars magic! And it's not that I am "old fashioned", I love the Mandalorian as a new production, so it's not about "generation gap", it's about the rhythm of the movie, it's like you are dropped in a two hour long trailer for some epic saga! You get tired, characters are like pawns on the table, there was no time for build up of any feelings, mood, everything happens just like on a factory assembly line.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 2: The Child (2019)
Star Wars comics for the 21st century
I love the Mandalorian. We used to read Star Wars comics to fill in the gaps in that large universe. There was never enough screen-time in the movies to explore so many creatures, races, technologies... and we have just that, all neatly packed in a series of half an hour episodes - and it's superb! The quality of the production is not far behind the movies. Characters, cinematography, music, sound, everything is just right. Can't wait for the next episode!
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Don't underestimate the audience
Some medium spoilers ahead!
I am huge fan of the series but this is getting worse and worse. And it's a shame because of a huge potential. They should just remake the whole Covenant movie but without the stupidest cosmic crew ever assembled for a space mission. I just can't stand all those completely illogical moves! The group of randomly chosen citizens would act with more sense than the highly trained spaceship crew in this movie.
It's a complete mess, not in a good way. If I compare this movie to the Aliens, my favorite in the saga, the Covenant is like some child got the enormous budget and super-talented production crew to make a naive movie for audience of an elementary school level. Ridley just should hire one serious QA person to check the script and point out what's plain stupid and completely unlikely.
Actors could be great - if given a chance. I guess they must be frustrated. This way all of them except two androids are just fast cannon fodder, plain, shallow and forgettable. What a waste!
Still, I recommend to see the movie if you love the series. Visually, the movie is fantastic. See it in 4D cinema because the special effects are ten out of ten.
I was so eager to see it as I expected that they'll correct and make up for all bad things that has ruined the Prometheus, but no avail. What a disappointment!
Battlestar Galactica (2004)
One of the best SF series ever
I love Star Wars, I love Star Trek, I love Aliens and just when I thought that there is nothing more that can match the thrill in sci-fi domain - there it is - Battlestar Galactica! I truly enjoyed it. It's different, it's exciting, it's superbly directed and produced. The actors are so vivid, the visual style is fantastic, the music is inspiring, the plot is great, everything is just done right. One of the best, if not the best, SF series ever. I'll go even further and say that for me it's one of the best series on TV all around (including Twin Peaks, Sopranos etc..). I remember the original, yes it was fun, but even then it was a bit cheesy. Not so with the new series, it's as cool as it can get on TV. The only thing that can bother some audience is that this is so different - I'd say this it the biggest strength of this series. Star Trek looks a bit sterile after this - just compare a holographic doctor in shiny sickbay there and a man with a cigar here. Brilliant work! Can't wait for the next season!
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Mediocre, cheesy, boring and uncreative
What is this hype all about?! I read reviews here and went to see it with great expectations as fantasy movies are my favorite. What a disappointment! I never read the book but what I saw in the movie is bad, very bad. It feels like you meld abandoned scenes from Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter with weak story, bad direction and completely uncreative fantasy world. Everything there was just recycle from many genre classics and even worse from computer games and intros - some scenes are direct copy from Warcraft III intro! There is also a Matrix scene, a lot of LOTR stuff and so on. Not a single new and interesting point in this movie. It looks to me as "one more generic fantasy" created not by human, but by very limited CSG - Computer Screenplay Generator. The voices of animals are bad (except for the beaver), and especially The Lion.
OK, it's not a complete waste - it's probably a very good movie for 7-10 year old kids, and CG is correct (but nothing special). Also, I guess that those who read the book may see it differently, but from my point of view it's awful. To compare this to LOTR is like to compare a week old BigMac with a finest dinner in a royal restaurant. Consume this movie only if you are starving. Overall 3/10 is more than enough.
Immortel (ad vitam) (2004)
Flawed and yet brilliant
It's a visual master piece, much different to Hollywood style production. It's obvious that the budget was nowhere near to Hollywood SF blockbusters but it has very special charm. The story is interesting, visually attractive and mysterious. The atmosphere is superb and there is a great deal of nice details everywhere. You'll be disappointed if you expect SF blockbuster movie, but you'll be pleasantly surprised if you look at this as an SF art movie in 3D cartoon style with some live acting. Only minuses are that there is a lot of Blade Runner and Fifth Element style all around. The good thing is that many ideas from those movies are upgraded and has class of its own. Even the music is nice - but still far away from Vangelis soundtrack for Blade Runner. Movies like this are very rare and financially always a great risk, so I think it deserves attention of any SF fan.
Blade Runner (1982)
A true SF classic
I've seen thousands of movies but Blade Runner is my favorite, my No. 1 movie ever. Even after all those years it looks impressive and fresh today. Everything is superb - from the Philip K. Dick's idea to Ridley Scott's direction, actors, Vangelis soundtrack and Syd Mead's visuals. It's deep, balanced, inspiring, a true cult movie. Blade Runner inspired so many more movies, books, computer games... it's a milestone in a film industry. When I look at the Blade Runner today in a technical way I enjoy the real-life look of old-school special effects - no CGI that oversaturate today's fast-food blockbuster movies that look more and more like Playstation intros. I appreciate it even more today than in 80es as in over than two decades no SF movie succeed to be so compelling and complete as Blade Runner.
