Shapath (1997)
GOOD/ABOVE AVERAGE - Mithun on top form ** Contains Minor Spoiler **
Mithun made lots of stupid & pointless films in the 90's but out of those countless films, he made about 6-10 good/watchable films and Shapath is one of them, Yes thats right!! Shapath is good. The film has its own storyline which is not exactly new but it is overall very entertaining and Mithun-Jackie as usual deliver good performances, However it is Mithun who steals the show yet again. The film has a great song by Altaf Raja "Ishq aur pyaar ka mazaa lee jiye" (Altaf also has a guest appearance in the song video). The only thing that lets the film down was the end fight/action scene at the hospital which was inspired from Hard Boiled (but then again Bollywood has been doing this for a long time so it doesn't really matter). There are a lot of films starring Mithun-Jackie: Aaag Hi Aag, Phool Aur Aag, Ustadon Ke Ustad, Ganga Ki Kasam, These films were totally brainless, boring & crap all thanks to the director T.L.V Prasad however the 2 films starring the Mithun-Jackie combo Shapath & Yamraaj were good, these were both directed by Rajiv Babber. Yamraaj is much better and leagues ahead of Shapath but Shapath is also a good movie in its own right. BOTTOM LINE:- Don't expect a masterpiece and watch it only as sheer entertainment & you will be entertained.
Yamraaj (1998)
WoW! - Mithun Rules - PLAIN & SIMPLE !!!
Yamraaj is a fantastic film I'm telling you, a superior action flick. It has a gripping storyline which keeps you glued to your seats & entertained all the way through. The whole cast have done an exceptional job in the film, especially Jackie & Mithun. Jackie as usual, has done a great job and does justice to his character but it is Mithun who steals the show with his power packed performance, his bihaari accent bang on target! - very authentic. This is one of his best performances of the 90s, the other is in the film Jallaad. In my opinion he should have won an award for his performance in Yamraaj as well. Anyway, Gulshan Grover does a good job of portraying the main villain "Yamraaj". The film has some great action scenes (not copied from any film) and most importantly it has some great acting & dialogues. The songs weren't all that good but it's not something I cared about. It has a few minor plot holes but it doesn't affect the film in anyway whatsoever. This film was not directed by T.L.V Prasad (luckily) cos if it was, he would have messed it up big time and I wouldn't be writing all this. The only decent film T.L.V Prasad ever made was Jallaad. BOTTOM LINE:- Watch this Explosive Action Flick and you'll be surprised at how brilliant yet underrated it is. Its one of those films which make you reach for the rewind button time & time again!!
Jallaad (1995)
Excellent - Mithun at his fiery best !!!
I just saw this film and thought i'll find out what people say about this film on IMDb. Guess what, NOTHING AT ALL!! Mithun in a totally convincing double role plays the main villain Amavas and the son Shakti who is an inspector. What can i say?, This film has everything action, romance, great storyline, great songs, the background score every time they show the villain Amavas (Mithun) is slightly chilling yet tense which totally adds to the quality of the film. And also the great Mithunda is in his best role ever for which he even won a film fare award 1995 (best villain). This is the only film directed by T.L.V Prasad that is actually brilliant (its also the only one to receive an award & some critical acclaim), he tried recreating the magic of Jallaad in his other 20+ films with Mithun but they weren't this good. Trust me, this double role is not like the one mithun played in the boring "Swarg Yahan Narak Yahan"(1991) which is a copy of Amitabh/Dilip kumar film "Shakti". People think that Mithuns films like Surakshaa, Wardaat, disco dancer and commando (amongst others) are his best. There are good but are in no way up to the standard of this film. This film is an action film too but not those brainless ones that mithun made in the 80s and 90s, This one actually has a brilliant storyline which touches on politics, childhood abandonment, hatred and ultimately revenge. BOTTOM LINE:- Watch this entertaining film and you'll enjoy it, GUARANTEED!!!.
