Great as Propaganda, below average as a feature film
27 October 2009
That pretty much says it all. It even has John Wayne! Except the Indians are played by Arabs with keffiyeh instead of feathers. Not to belabor the Dukery, but this movie does for Palestine what "The Green Berets" did for Vietnam. No one expects (or should expect) movies like this to be a documentary, but holy cow! At least if we'd have gotten a little more heat from Angie Dickinson it might have saved the picture. Even the combat scenes are boring. This is the kind of movie that I see coming on and think, "wow, Kirk Douglas, Yul Brenner, Palestine 1948, this is gonna be great" and then you get a movie that could make Leni Riefenstahl blush, and it isn't even entertaining! This is one you can definitely leave off your list.

Watchable but overrated

This is just "Panic in Needle Park" with indulgent camera effects and---with the exception of Ellen Burstyn---sub-par acting. Jennifer Connelly and Jared Leto mail it in. And when Marlon Wayans is on the screen I just keep thinking "White Chicks". And I didn't even see that movie. As for the goofy camera tricks, I just wished, as I always do with these goofy "wow, I'm SO drugged out" gimmicks, I could find drugs that work like that! In the pantheon of drug movies (and I've seen quite a few) this one falls down near the bottom. If you want a depressing, drug addled, waste of 100 minutes, do it the old fashioned way, drop acid and listen to some Pink Floyd.

Be careful fellas

Heterosexual males should not watch this movie in the presence of the other heterosexual males, because if the final scene doesn't make you cry like a little girl . . . you're dead inside.

An excellent opportunity to score sensitivity points with your lady friend, however.

Frankly, I find some of Chaplain's work a bit . . . (cue thunder) . . . overrated, but this movie has it all: classic physical comedy, a moving story, and wonderful acting by all involved. It's definitely a desert island Chaplain. As well as the perfect introduction.

One more example of how true genius can make less so much more!
