Xia tian de wei ba (2007)
A refreshing story about the innocent youth
The director gave us an entertaining yet refreshing story about the innocent youth. The first love of boys and girls is entwined with adults' earthly stories. There is no value judgement from the director to instruct you the right and wrong, which allows the audience to enjoy the movie with an objective and moderate perspective. Youth is innocent and painful, and yet is to be replaced by adultness, which may drive away friendship, fairness, pure love, etc. And in this story, the later, no doubt, spoils some boy's or girl's first love, as the life teach us a lesson now and then. But everyone have no choice but to grow up.

Just a outstanding imitator of Guy Ritchie
From plot to transition, from angle of lens to rhythmic montage, from editing to tone, from contrast to freeze frame..., you can get the impression involving Guy Ritchie, who may be referred as the Godfather of Film Noir. This story starts with a priceless emerald, a squad of slack guards and two gangs of thieves, one of which is amateur, while the other is professional judging from the looking. It is not difficult to speculate what would happen from this kind of stereotyped beginning. We can't tell which part is the imitation and which is the original. It's a concise and smart comedy, somehow, whose genre is quite different from traditional dramas we can watch at the Chinese cinema. Anyway, for the director, we can say, it's almost an perfect homework. It would make somebody laugh, but it is difficult to have the audience impressed as a milestone movie.

Can't tell anything worth any compliment in such an industrial product of HongKong
Can't tell anything worth any compliment in such an industrial product of HongKong Banal character, stereotyped script and humor. You can't see any performance in this movie. I was cheated by the rating at IMDb, otherwise I would have never watched this kind of "fast food" movie. The only thing I recognized is that this is another HongKong entertaining picture which was already old-fashioned by that time. Swordsmen film can be extremely touching or thought-provoking, but not in this way, adding some romantic plots as spice in a bowl of plain rice. However, it has a happy ending. The head of thieves decided to change their living all of a sudden. I just can't accept it especially the decision was made rightly after the lose of fight, and before which, they robbed a pretty girl. What a drama!
