La sociedad de la nieve (2023)
Amazing and inspiring film, very true to reality
I was very familiar with the story because I had seen the film, read the "Alive!" book and visited the "Andes 1972" museum in Montevideo.
But nothing had prepared me to the experience of seeing this movie.
It is excellent, a true tale of the fortitude of human spirit and team work. The title, "the society", is well chosen, because they survived the impossible only because they work helping each other.
I was also lucky to be able to watch the film in Spanish, and having chosen Uruguyan / Argentinean actors proves to be an excellent choice and adds to the realism.
The cinematography is amazing, the beauty of the mountains shown with its cruelty at the same time.
A movie I will remember for a long, long time.
El Último Vagón (2023)
Beautiful film
This film portrayes life in a simple, realistic and moving way.
It is a beautiful story about the importance of teaching, and it develops without oversensitive tricks.
It might seem simple but it is this simplicity which makes it realistic and captivating.
In the movie there are deaths and difficulties which are part of real life, and it shows how characters adapt and deal with life without heroic events.
What is heroic is, as Mrs. Georgina says, "life a good life", and I ended up crying at the end, with some characters leading a good life, others dying too young, and others having the courage to change and do something meaningful.
Highly recommeded, specially if you can see it in the original Spanish version.
Faraway (2023)
Charming
This is a rom com, so one cannot expect an oscar winning script or a Christoper Nolan universe.
However I found the film nicer and more relatable than usual, due to the leads being plus 45, but without stereotypes or actors/actresses who have undergone too many cosmetic surgeries.
It felt real, with the struggles of a woman who does not realise how unhappy she is until reality hits her in the face. Also the scenery was beatiful, and the fact that people talked in German, English, Croatian and with real accents, made it more real than the usual Hollywood rom coms.
I found the "Macron" reference and jokes specially funny.
Purple Hearts (2022)
Actually, better than expected
Ok it might be predictable but the development of the characters is slow and realistic, and you witness how they end up caring deeply for one another.
Good acting as well.
It is better than the usual romcom movies that netflix produces.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
I had so much fun.
It succeeds in delivering two hours of action. It is much better than the original, I loved the characteres and how they have developed over the years.
The people in my cinema ended up cheering. Enough said :)
Churchill (2017)
Not researched, bad, bad... bad.
This is the first bad review I post in IMDB. As the movie progressed I was left wondering... could all my readings, documentaries and research about Winston Churchill and WWII be so wrong?
The facts did not add up, the characters were ill-designed, the dialogues and interactions were just wrong and unrealistic; a very bad script which is an insult to a man who won the Nobel prize of Literature, of all prizes.
I went to IMDB to check other viewers' reviews and I found solace in the fact people can see through this utter garbage of a movie.
Just an attempt to twist the history to 'add a different angle' but that ends up in a perilous distortion of an historical figure and a very important period of recent world history.
Avoid.
Generazione 56K (2021)
Charming and fun
I only picked the title as I wanted to practice my Italian :), and I was pleasantly surprised.
It uses the nostalgia factor in a smart way, as it is fun, charming and fast paced. 30 minutes episodes that will keep you smiling. The characters and stories are believable and they do not dwell on stereotypes. Really recommend it. Bella Napoli :-)
The Man in the High Castle (2015)
Excellent series, great performance and food for thought
This is my first review in IMDb after 10 years, which goes to show how much I am enjoying this series. Now watching Season 2, I believe that this is a great show which makes you think about the consequences of war, dictatorships and compromises. Despite there is a clear distinction between "good" and "bad" sides, the characters evolve and show a depth that adds reality to the plot. You might despise one of them and after a couple of chapters, pity him. What can I say about a show that makes you want Hitler to survive at some point??? The atmosphere is a work of art and makes you believe that the greater Reich and the pan pacific states are truly real. The performances are excellent too and the actor chosen well; Obergruppenfuhrer Smith with his steel gaze and enigmatic maneuvers, Chief Inspector Kiddo and his sense of duty or the loyal Ed McCarthy. Perphaps the only problem I had in the beginning was with the cast of Alexa Davalos as I could not see her as the main character, but her performance gains in stature over the chapters and you end up rooting for her, and the love triangle between her and Joe and Frank is well constructed with a lot of chemistry - specially between Joe and Jules.
