Garden of the Dead (1972)
Not a good place to pick up your tomatoes...!
When I come home late from work and I had a rough day, I don't want to go to bed right away, but I don't want to start a 2h00 complicated movie either...So, this one is a very good option! About an hour long, dumb characters, scary ambiance music as well as jazzy, old Spider-Man-cartoon-feel music, the french dubbed version I have is totally hilarious! It goes down very easily with a few beers, there's just a good cheap feel to it. The prisoner I like the best is the one small bald guy with the big eyes, over-acting all the way through! Not that the other actors are better, but this guy does it like it was his last shot to make it big and be discovered! See it if you're a zombie-maniac-low-budget like me.
Le roi du drum (1992)
T'as-tu fini Nadon avec tes criss de casseroles?!
If I haven't seen this movie 300 times, I never saw it! It is so funny, touching, lots of good jazz music, drum solos (avec des cacannes!), people talking about there past lives...Guy Nadon is very outgoing, a little naive, listens to everybody but does not always agree with them, that makes good confrotations! I love the part when Vic tells him :You should have been a teenage idol. Nadon listens, but is not too sure...And of course the comment of Taika, she tells us what REALLY turns her on! There's also a part with Nadon talking with a music collectioner, they are not on the same planet, but they are both dedicated. I've watched it recently with my daughter, she had a great time watching Ti-Guy singing and playing the drums, like all the children within us would have...You don't have to be a jazz maniac to enjoy this movie, just enjoy the ride! There's no one else like Ti-Guy!
End of the Line (2007)
I think I'll walk home...
Very impressive low-budget film. Very intense right at the beginning, you slowly get to know just enough of the characters to care for them before they get kill. Scary parts, gory parts, it was all good. A mix between zombies, slashers, survival, with a touch of social/religious satire, I think a lot of horror movie-fans will get a kick out of it. I noticed hommages payed to Night of the Living Dead+Dawn of the Dead+The Shining, which made me smile! Opposite to what we are used to see in this kind of movie, the actors are pretty decent (Not that I don't like it when they're bad...). Nobody plays its part too much, no one looks so bad it's funny kind of playing, etc... Lâche pas la patate, Maurice!
Ô rage électrique! (1985)
...criss, on r'çoit des roches su'l stage, tabarnac...
This won't take long. If you're a fan of Plume, you've got to see it. Not just for the live music, but this man, every time he speaks, it's always fascinating. His points of view on the music-biz, the anecdotes, the introduction of his musicians...I love when he blasts the audience! There's also a scene where we witness the band rehearsing in the afternoon before the show. At the last minute, he decides to change some arrangements, and they all work together. It's also very fun to listen to some people of his entourage and get their point of view on some old stories.Cholet, his bass player, is now a waiter in a bar in Montreal. Every time he brings me a big 50, I'm the happiest Plume fan ever!
Tabarnac (1975)
Wezo is the man!
I have to say, I'm a huge fan of that period of Offenbach. Pierre Harel, who wrote some amazing song lyrics, was not a singer anymore from that point on (with Offenbach). But I have to say, he sang killer tracks on the 1st Corbeau album ('79). This is, to me, the very beginning of what would become a huge band in Quebec. To see those young men, playing live shows, drinking, rehearsing, drinking, tripping, and drinking again, is always fun to witness...well, not for two hours every time, but some passages are very fun. Johnny is very quiet, Gerry is the natural front man, Willie is very up front too, but Wezo is the coolest. He just looks like he doesn't take all that circus too seriously, except when it's time to play on his drum kit. We even see him french-kissing Francoise Faraldo, who later became Gerry's wife! Two years after they came back to Quebec, they recorded a television show (Le Jardin des Etoiles), and that ROCKS! I guess they had to go through Europe and the adventure of Tabarnac to find there unique sound...Mostly for the hardcore fans of the band, and for the curious ones, if you wanna see what goes on back-stage...and in their house! Don't forget the perfect companion, a pack of Labatt 50
Podium (2004)
Poelvoorde may be the funniest man on earth
I first saw "C'est arrivé près de chez-vous"(Man bites dog) about ten years ago and I was amazed by the whole thing. The darkest humor ever, sick violent scenes, and of course, the Man himself.Poelvoorde plays a violent maniac but he's funny and charismatic at the same time.Fast forward to 2005:I realised there was a new movie with that guy that I've never seen in another film.I didn't know that much about Claude Francois, but I had to see Poelvoorde in another role. Here he plays Bernard Frédéric,an ex-imitator of Cloclo. He stopped his "career" in show-business when his wife,Véro, gave an ultimatum. So now he has a boring job,9 to 5, a son, a "normal" life. But when he learns that there is an imitator contest on prime time TV,his passion takes over.So many funny scenes in this movie! The auditions of his "Clodettes"(he's so rude with them ,can't watch it without laughing)the psycho-therapist,the introduction of his partner Couscous, the sex scene in which he changes his love tempo depending what Claude song he has in mind,...Add to this a great soundtrack, dancing, beautiful women in there Clodettes suit, a happy ending and you have 90 minutes of pure joy.I can't wait to see the long version.
Le notti del terrore (1981)
...smeels of death...
"Burial Ground" has every ingredients a cheap zombie movie needs:and more!First, you have stupids dialogs from beginning to end.Bad actors(but, anyway, how can they be any good with these lines?!)Good atmospheric music, lots of gore scenes, beautiful women, beautiful setting(same castle as in "Malabimba")and as a bonus,we have Michael, the scariest character of all time. You have not to take this movie too seriously, but,if you are a euro-thrash horror fan,you won't be disappointed. The zombies looks like potatoes bags, they seem to "communicate"with each other, they work against the living as a team, and the bunch of humans are so dumb,it's so funny. One of my favorite part,is when this guy goes: "We should let them in.Maybe it's the house they want, not us!"And they all agree!Get the point? Then check it out!
