The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Absolutely stunning!
As a lifelong fan of the videogames, I've wanted an adaptation of these beloved games ever since kindergarten. Seven year old me would've loved it! And I love it now!
The soundtrack was a bit odd at first. Hearing popular songs such as No Sleep Til Brooklyn and I Need A Hero in a Nintendo movie was strange, but the feel of the songs lined quite well with the scenes they were playing in.
The casting: better than given credit for.
Chris Pratt is an amazing actor, and while he may not have been a popular first choice among the fans (some of which wanted Charles Martinet, the original voice actor for Mario, to reprise his role), his chemistry with Charlie Day as Luigi was unmatched and I could almost feel the brotherly love myself.
Jack Black as Bowser was an unexpected but absolutely perfect choice. No one could've mastered the goofiness, yet evil of Bowser better than he did. Sometimes, I forgot it was even Jack Black speaking. His voice transformation is flawless and he fit into that role quite well.
I used to think Seth Rogen was a terrible choice for Donkey Kong. But watching the movie, I can't look at Donkey Kong and imagine hearing anyone else. He played that role quite well.
The music was stunning. This unique and epic take on Koji Kondo's original scores gave me chills. Hearing tunes such as Peaches Castle theme and the original Super Mario Brothers theme playing in the background of the scenes brought back many fond memories of mine. I'm sure most can agree.
Finally, the visual effects. From Bullet Bills to blue shell explosions to rainbow road, every frame of this movie was fantastic and it felt like true cinema and a perfect childhood favorite blended beautifully into one carefully crafted film. Props to all of the actors and creators that worked so hard on this movie. It deserves every ounce of love it's getting and more.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)
Just as weird as you expect!
The casting choices in this movie may put off some viewers but is excellent nonetheless. Daniel Radcliffe nailed his role and definitely did the strangeness of the real Al justice. The dry, satire humor was sometimes played for cheap laughs and the chemistry between the characters wavered at some parts, but not nearly enough to be bad or noticable to many. The pacing was crazy and at some parts, it felt like I was watching a whole new movie. Regardless, I still very much enjoyed this movie and it was worth the wait. Celebrities such as Lin Manuel Miranda, Patton Oswalt, Al Yankovic himself, and even David Dastmalchian snuck their ways into this movie and really added to the fun, light hearted tone of the movie.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
An emotional masterpiece
Spoilers below
This incredible movie lived up to the hype, and probably exceeded it. At least from my standpoint. It was thrilling and exciting to see familiar faces return to the big screen and revisit their roles. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield snapped right back into their old roles and it was like I was watching one of their movies again. Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina did an incredible job and it was like nothing changed. The acting and cinematics we're on par with Avengers: Endgame, perhaps even better. I look forward to what marvel has in store for these characters in the future, if they ever return.
