Poolboy: Drowning Out the Fury (2011)
Satire
I watched this movie at a friend's tonight and I can unequivocally say that his is one of the most satirical movies...ever! It is smart (a number of self-referential levels, as well as allusions to other, commercially "good" (i.e. "popular") movies and TV shows: Rambo, Airwolf and the The Deer Hunter comes to mind. "American ideology" is deconstructed and re-imagined as (alter)native; the nativity of a clown.
But it's also so stupidly bad at the same time, you would sometimes forget you're watching a satire.
It's either brilliant or the worst movie ever.
I think it's both: watch it!!!
The Dividing Hour (2003)
Yes it's That Awful
Yeah. So. I picked this gem out of the .99 cent bin at our local movie outlet.
The folks who made this joke of a movie should be embarrassed. I don't mind indie/homemade films (in fact I hunt them out) but the quality of the stock is soooo bad. . .in terms of production value, it's a freak-show. But the ringer is THEY (the folks who actually made this visual feast) think it's a good movie. They even claim, on the cover, that Roger Ebert recommends it. Now I know he's been hard up for money and respect since Gene died (YES--people watched it for Gene, not the "populist--I'll give any old crap a thumbs up; waaaay up"--fat man), but I give him more credit than to put his (good?) name to such trash.
Run away. Run Away.
Ghosts That Still Walk (1977)
I have memories
of watching this as a child. Although I'll probably find it god-awful now, it was kind-of spooky stuff as I was only seven or so. I also recall working on a Saturday-afternoon puzzle while watching it, so I wasn't really paying much attention. However, the scene with the rolling boulders has been burnt into my mind ever since. I've asked numerous people if they've seen this flick but to no avail. 12 years ago, one person mentioned that, possibly, he had seen it, but he thought it merely a dream; a fanciful piffle like wind. It's no dream, my friend. No dreaming now. Again, I haven't seen it since then, but I can't wait to find a copy and stuff it into my VCR. Anything that can stay embedded in my mind's eye for 23 years deserves a '10'.
