Mary & George (2024)
I wanted to like this
I enjoyed episode 1 and from then on it went rapidly downhill until we eventually abandoned it at episode 3.
The sound on the dialogue was quite hard to make out without subtitles as it was very badly mixed. After straining to hear and then attempt to grasp what the convoluted plot was actually about it wasn't actually worth the effort.
Just another one of these tedious series which descend into a garbled mess after a promising start.
Who is actually approving the script? The costumes and the sets were fantastic so once again it's the writing that insults the viewers intelligence.
A wasted opportunity!
All That Breathes (2022)
Top notch Documentary
Loved this film. It really was like being a fly on the wall. So unobtrusively filmed with some stunning almost invisible camera work.
I felt immersed in the location and was gobsmacked by the selfless work of these inspiring people to rescue the city's wildlife despite many setbacks and difficulties.
There's not many films I'd watch again but this is definitely one of them. The way it captured the atmosphere and reality of Delhi was incredible.
I was left feeling both relieved to be lucky enough to live in relative luxury in my beautiful Scotland and conversely quite jealous of the close bonds and unspoken communication that exists between Indian people who are not still not entirely consumed by the disconnection of Western culture.
Definitely my film of the year!
RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) (2022)
A masterpiece
This amazing movie is an absolute masterpiece in film making. The special effects are incredible but they never detract from the compelling storyline.
The acting is astonishing and it's one of the very few films I would actually watch again and again. The music and choreography are phenomenal too.
The two main characters strength and agility is so impressive and their skill in portraying a huge range of emotions just blew me away. Each scene must have taken ages to produce. I'm running out of superlatives here as this movie is beyond doubt the best I've seen in a long time. I'll be thinking about it and reliving it for a long time to come.
The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (2022)
Excellent!
Great acting and cast in this funny, mind boggling and excruciating drama. I remember seeing the story in the press at the time and this production does it justice.
Anatomy of a Scandal (2022)
The anatomy of a bad ending
It starts so well and then the twist came in episode 5. It turns out that even very young people can suffer from Alzheimer's too.
When the fashionable flashbacks happen you don't recognise the main characters and then.., in the present day they don't recognise each other either.
Confused? You will be.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Enjoyable fiction
Julia Garner was great in this well cast enjoyable romp. Ok so it was partly fictional but once you get over that it's an engaging entertaining story.
La promesse (2020)
Poor storyline gets progressively worse.
This really can't be compared to Spiral which apparently is from same production team and the reason I watched.
A female police detective who's bad at her job surely isn't the ideal protagonist for this flawed series.
It just about gets to episode five with some credibility before bringing on a series of risible belly laughs - which is obviously not the audience response the producers are hoping for.
Maybe just one day there will be a detective who has a supportive partner, that would be radical. And that is just one of the many cliches that abound in the poor script.
The Tourist (2022)
Not bad but not great
Had to watch this to the end having invested time in the first few episodes but it gets increasingly silly as it goes on. Almost abandoned it but not quite so I guess it wasn't TOO bad!
Den som dræber - Fanget af mørket (2019)
Season 2 is awful. Don't waste your time.
Unless you want to witness the worst criminal profiler ever, and unless you're the sort of person who doesnt try to piece together the story of a script, Don't bother with this.
This series is awful.
After about the fifth episode I abandoned this and then decided to give it another try and go back to it... Big mistake!
Time (2021)
Excellent
Really enjoyed this series. Sean Bean gave a stellar performance. Up till now I wasn't a great Stephen Graham fan but he was superb in this drama. Well worth watching.
ZeroZeroZero (2019)
Astounding series.
This was high-class drama and a multifaceted story which never failed to engage. One of the best series I've ever seen with incredible cast and script.
Extremely violent in places but not gratuitous as all part of the plot.
Long Strange Trip (2017)
Priceless
This is one of the best music documentaries I've ever seen. Nearly split my sides laughing but the music and integrity of the band is truly astonishing.
Leonardo (2021)
Excellent series
Really enjoying this series. Aidan Turner shows the depth of his acting skills. The sets and costumes are a visual treat.
Vikings: The Viking Sagas (2014)
Awesome.
This was one of the best series I've ever seen. Just keeps getting better right to the end. Amazing cast and production.
Mosaic (2018)
Baffling
.... but not in a good way.. inconclusive... I feel like I've lost 6 hours in my life that I'll never get back.
The Dig (2021)
Beautiful film
Loved this poignant, beautifully crafted movie. It captured the period and the acting and casting were stellar
Engrenages (2005)
Amazing.
Quite simply the best crime series ever. Whoever wrote the storylines must have been there and done it as it comes across as totally authentic. I'll miss the characters as apparently there won't be a sequel.
They definitely went out on a high!
Vis a vis (2015)
Loved it
What a pleasant surprise this series was. Really great cast and script. Highly recommend
Vivir sin permiso (2018)
Gets progressively worse
The first series was great but the script in the second series insults intelligence. When you find yourself laughing when it's supposed to be drama you know it's all going wrong
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019)
Amazing film
This was my favourite film of the year so far. Amazing acting and the entire cast was stellar.
The Undoing (2020)
Hammy acting
I felt the main protagonists were overacting all of the way through this and as a result I just couldn't be convinced of the storyline.
His Dark Materials (2019)
Disappointing ending
The series seemed to improve as it developed but the attempt to tie everything up in the final episode failed miserably.
Britannia (2017)
Convoluted rubbish
It's depressing to see an extremely expensive production with such a rubbish storyline. Hopelessly inappropriate music doesn't help.
Killing Eve (2018)
entertaining but not believable
I felt the second series lost the plot the more it developed. As is so common, particularly with UK & USA TV series the script let it down and became so convoluted that you had to suspend your disbelief to be able to bother seeing it through to the end.
I know it probably was meant to be more of a caper than an intelligent thriller but surely that doesn't mean it has to descend into farce. It felt like another sad case of script by committee to me. A shame because the cast was good but for the reasons already mentioned...not a classic!
La casa de papel (2017)
Zany and intelligent
Absolutely fantastic series. This is up amongst with the best series I've ever seen. Really good casting and I fell in love with all the characters. A great combination of thrilling, funny and totally engaging with a clever storyline that doesn't insult your intelligence.
