Jesus Camp (2006)
a brilliant condemnation of the dangers of the twin evils of fundamentalism and conservatism
This is a film everyone should see. Think of it as a horror film, but with the events actually occurring. The plot concerns a group of children being brainwashed by right-wing fundamentalists into becoming dangerous fanatics supporting the political right's doctrines of hate, fascism, and xenophobia. As an anarcho-socialist and atheist I strongly recommend this as a demonstration of how right-wing views are inherently dangerous to everyone. An antidote to all of you who fell for the lies expressed in such cinematic rubbish as 'god's not dead'.
Uchûjin Tôkyô ni arawaru (1956)
an odd mix of unintentional humor and genuinely interesting scenes
this is one of my favourite films. it has a peculiar mix of bad special effects, weird and accidentally humorous scenes (notably the one where one of the pairans uses her super jumping powers to play tennis with a group of random teenagers while disguised as the star of a popular musical), and some genuinely atmospheric moments on the pairan ship. the plot is somewhat derivative of 'the day the earth stood still' with its moral about the co-operation of humans and aliens, but there are enough interesting moments to make it worth watching. highly recommended.
Frankenstein's Daughter (1958)
the film that sparked an obsession
This was probably the film that changed my life the most. It sparked my obsession with terrible films. I saw it on a television rerun as a teen-ager and my life was never the same. I realized that a film can be just as enjoyable, if not more so, if it is ineptly made. soon I was watching such classics as 'plan 9 from outer space', 'manos, the hands of fate', 'santa clause conquers the martians', 'space mutiny', 'laserblast', 'warning from space', and countless other b-movies, for I realized that an unintentional comedy is far superior to most intentional ones.
The Light of the World (2003)
absolutely the worst, makes 'the little panda fighter' look like a masterpiece
This is a contender for the title of worst film of all time. It is a ludicrous mess of propaganda that has no logic to back up the viewpoints expressed and the artwork is comical. The logic seems to be 'do what I say or go to hell' which is absurd. There is no evidence for the existence of hell, god, Jesus, or many other things mentioned in this slideshow, and jack chick has proved himself to be a very unpleasant individual. If you want a film about space fascists (which is essentially what this 'god' character is) just watch space mutiny (not a good film, but better than this rubbish).
The Catcher in the Rye (2008)
pretentious and phoney
first of all, I would like to say that i am an absurdist and that this is not absurdism, this is a get rich quick scheme. despite the claims that this is a "demonstration of the meaninglessness of the work" or the "artists" "personal interpretation", it really isn't. it would require no effort to create this film, and it serves as a demonstration of the "director's" narcissism more than anything else. despite my interest in experimental cinema, I strongly dislike pretentious films such as this or 'wavelength'.
