From start to finish this film is geared towards one audience - those of the Christian stripe.
There is nothing new or inventive in the film, nothing that provokes emotion in the cinematography or music (unless Gregorian chants to sleep by are your cup of tea.) This is yet another example of filmmakers with too much access to cash and not enough access to talent getting a chance to have their films splashed up on the big screens.
Sure, it is a safe bet for the holidays. This is not going to break box office records, but it should turn a profit - but at what cost? It does nothing but present a very dry presentation of a bible story. And at its running time, the amateurish production snoozes along from opening to closing. There are few spots where anything of real drama unfolds.
From the actors to the film itself this is a sleep-inducing production. Safe, vanilla, and not likely to offend anyone except those looking for entertainment value for their buck.
No doubt Christians will praise it for its depiction, since it tells the story from a Christian perspective. Ironically, it is not even filmed in the Holy Land.
For the moviegoer looking for something beyond a dry retelling of a story that barely qualifies as a half-hour special on television, this is one to miss. For Christians looking for something they can see and not be offended by, this might be the right choice.
