Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
It's definitely epic with a couple loose screws
As a whole, The Rise of Skywalker is a fitting epic conclusion to this amazing saga. Don't believe for a second that this movie is worse than the prequels. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver especially give powerful performances each showing how their friends and family influence the side they belong on. That's not to saw a few slip ups occur throughout. The way is which Palpatine returned is especially annoying to not see an explanation. New characters introduced will most likely be forgotten after they exit the screen. But overall a satisfying end to the epic saga strung together with exceptional directing and story.
Joker (2019)
Left the theater with a happy face
All that Joker accomplishes in its two hour run time is astonishing. Making a psychotic murder sympathetic and layered is quiet an achievement. Using its R rating to explore the deep and explicit world Arthur lives in greatly affects how we perceive this characters representing the lower class in modern society. I wouldn't dare end this review without a mention to Joaquin Phoenix's magnetic performance making us believe he is the clown prince of crime from the comics but also retain a sense of humanity in his interactions with his city and people. Phoenix better not be cheated out of his Oscar.
The Turning (2020)
Turns a little too much but too little
Right of the bat the movie looks promising with a beautiful location and atmosphere. This is wasted barely halfway through when cheap jump scares ensue. Ghosts in a window reflection don't get scarier throughout a films run time. Mackenzie Davis gives it her best but is wasted on a convoluted script. When you think the movie is heading into its third act and will answer all its baffling questions, the credits begin rolling. Its biggest crime is teasing creepy scenes in its promotional material and not including them. The spider on Miles' face especially.
