A Gentleman in Moscow (2024)
Not remotely historically or culturally accurate but cute
I'm questioning whether the author has even ever been to Russia, has istorically & culturally this show is not remotely accurate. It is however very cute if you ignore all of that! I haven't read the book, but I am enjoying the cast & the aesthetics. It's a lovely concept to be stuck in a hotel (aside from the Overlook I guess) & has some cute Wes Anderson type vibes. But politically we are supposed to side with the spoilt rich royalty class? Does the author think the Romanovs & Rasputin were the good guys? To be honest this part of it I find jolts me out of enjoying this purely on an escapist level. Anyone who knows anything about the revolution would not side with the oppressors (yikes)
Resurrection (2022)
Makes perfect sense, brilliant movie
This film makes perfect sense to anyone who has experienced psychological abuse. The ending makes perfect sense, I don't know why some folks are so confused about it. Amazing acting, super creepy & stressful. Heartbreaking ending, that is clearly a trauma induced hallucination of what Maggie wanted all along. Her children safe from this evil man who tortured her & killed her baby. Not all movies are 100% literal all the time, I thought it was made very clear that the ending was her poor traumatised brain's desire, for peace & safety & her children. Especially as in the very last moment we see her alone in bed, wearing the clothes she was wearing when she killed him, clearly filthy, gasping with horror as she probably has a moment of realisation that although she killed her abuser & is free, she has now lost both her children. Make sense now guys? Ok.
Helstrom (2020)
Highly watchable fantasy horror
This has unfairly low ratings given how binge-worthy it is! I watched the whole season in one go, very interested to see where they take it in season 2. Watch if you enjoy shows about demons/nuns/exorcisms.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Pay attention to all the details
People who think this is not horror were not paying attention. This is a classic gothic horror, & there are hidden ghosts in almost every single shot. So impressively done! Beautifully shot, creepy & sad, wonderfully layered, & a tragic romance. The characters are so rich, I was very impressed with the child actors in particular as they had very complex roles to play. If you think they're "acting funny" - they ARE. On purpose. It makes sense if you bother to finish the story. I really hope this glorious team gets to make more of these. Finally, horror done right! So many horror pieces rely on cheap jump scares & gore without bothering to have any kind of a decent story (AHS I'm looking at you) & far too often they rely on crassly stigmatising people w mental illness (Ratched, I'm looking at you). The Haunting series has so far managed to create superior horror stories without resorting to either of these things. Thank god.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Colonialism! The Musical!
White saviourship has never been so catchy!!!! Where to begin, when a musical about a slave owner who was abusive to his "performers" completely avoids any mention of any of the realities behind the actual historical figure... ok forgetting all of that, the songs are horrendous & the costumes are so poorly made, do not even get me started on those cheap wigs... you had vintage circus as a theme & you still managed to make it look hideous! Low hanging fruit! Good grief. I couldn't even stand seeing this till the end.
Better Things (2016)
Incredibly real & beautiful
Wow. This show is something else. The writing & acting is so real it is sometimes maddening, as life with multiple teenagers can be. But the beauty is as intense as the tension. Just when you think you want to slap the ungreateful teens for giving their mum such a hard time, you remember that this is what teenagers are like, we all had these moments of acting this way. And when they have those pure moments where the guards are down & they can express their love & appreciation for their Mum, the amazing Pam Adlon... it moves me to tears. I really hope this brilliant & beautiful show is not hurt by Louis CK's shitty actions. Pam gives me life!
Atypical (2017)
An offensive & incorrect portrayal of autistic people
I shall start this review by stating I'm autistic. Btw we in the autistic community generally prefer to be called autistic people. Autism isn't a disease, it is a neurotype & we are not remotely ashamed of it. Why should we be? I do think however, the creators of this show should be ashamed of their incredibly inaccurate portrayal of autistic people. It's like they've never met an autistic person. I feel like they opened up the google & just wrote down all the stereotypical sh*t they could find. True story, when casting for this lead role, they auditioned autistic actors (because we exist in many areas & jobs in society, despite what terrible stereotypes like this show would have you believe... Anthony Hopkins is autistic on a major side note... ) & none of the autistic actors they auditioned were at all like the character they had written... because - surprise, surprise - a non autistic person cannot write an accurate autistic character, especially when all previous autistic characters in the media have been just as offensive & inaccurate... I digress... Even if we ignore the hugely inaccurate & offensive portrayal of autism (which I feel I should remind you that no autistic people were involved in this f-ing piece of sh*t) the storyline is misogynist. The men do not talk about women as people. They are merely prizes to be won, through harassment no less, for the purposes of sex. That is the premise of this show. It's disgusting. This is 2017. Women are human beings and deserve better. Men are also human beings and contrary to popular culture, have feelings too & autistic people - again, surprise - are also f-ing PEOPLE. HUMAN BEINGS. This portrayal of us as unfeeling non-humans is offensive at best but also DANGEROUS TO US. This constant dehumanising of us is directly harmful to us. We are not sociopaths. And we do have relationships with people. We have an entire autistic community & we love & support each other! This whole show is just one offensive & incorrect trope to another.
I have not even started on the fact that autistic people are ALWAYS portrayed as cis het white men. There are so many of us who do not fit into this category yet this false media portrayal just adds to the false narrative that it is a cis het white man's disease. Give us a show written & portrayed by autistic folks! Give us a show with autistic folks of colour, LGBTQIA autistic folks, autistic women! We are out here, crying out for better representation.
This show is not it. If you're not autistic- please listen to the community on this one. This is an offensive & incorrect portrayal & just largely a f-ING terrible show.
