Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Groundhog Day meets Aliens
I'm not a huge Tom Cruise fan, but I have to give him props where they're due. He is good in this film. He is greasy, smarmy, and not at all likable at the beginning of the movie, with the personality of a crooked used-car salesman trying to sell you a load. But by the end of the movie, I'm almost dancing on the couch with him on Oprah.
While admittedly I am a sucker for a time-travel film, still this movie has a lot going for it. It's intelligent, first of all, and doesn't assume you are half-watching while scrolling through social media (you probably should put the phone down for this film). There are small details you might miss if you aren't paying attention. It is fast-paced, and the scenes just before you gasp and jump back to the day before hit you in the gut. It moves along at just the right pace, and you actually feel you're getting the hang of it at the same time our hero does -- never ahead or behind.
Chicago Fire: My Lucky Day (2021)
Idiotic writing.
Firefighters taking an elevator on an active fire call.
55 gallon drums which "weigh 1100 lbs" that had been hauled by one man with a regular 2 wheeled dolly initially, but two firefighters have a hard time just standing up (not lifting).
Lots of standing around yacking instead of doing their job.
Coiled elevator cable so heavy it prevents sliding a hatch to the side under it until dramatically necessary, then it's tossed aside easily.
Idiotic firefighters pouring flammable liquids down a hole in an elevator to reduce weight in the elevator. Who cleaned up that 100 gallons of highly caustic, highly flammable floor stripper?
Christ I feel stupider having watched this episode.
Three Days of the Condor (1975)
Uncomfortable spy thriller
As sexy as Turner's (Robert Redford) eyes are, and as nice as Stockholm Syndrome looks on Kathy (Faye Dunaway), it is difficult to get past what would be in today's day and age glaring, unforgivable plot devices. Did people in 1975 simply accept that a woman who is kidnapped at gunpoint, forced to drive to her home, and left tied to a toilet while her kidnapper steals her car would then, when the kidnapper returns, simply go ahead and make love to him? It would seem so. But seeing this movie for the first time in 2020 leaves me uncomfortable.
Other than that, the movie has a good plot, moves along at a good speed, and has a pleasantly funky 1970s soundtrack.
A CIA researcher uncovers something which, when discovered by higher-ups, gets his entire office killed (except for him, because he was literally out to lunch.) While trying to figure out what is going on, our idealistic hero kidnaps a random woman, and in trying to figure out whom to trust, almost gets himself killed.
If you can overlook that the kidnapping device could have been solved by him taking a taxi to a random hotel and checking in under a false name, and you like spy-thriller movies, this might be for you.
