Letters to Defiance (2005)
A very good film which deserves wider distribution.
This human-interest documentary was as good as any other I have seen on the subject of World War II and its effects on ordinary people. I know Fran Seibert, and his charming and self-effacing personality came out clearly in the film. I liked the fact that the story was told simply, with the actual cartoons and Fran's words at the forefront. The feelings Fran expressed in the letters shed much light on the ways young men and their families coped with the long separations forced by wartime. The emotions which emerged from his letters were tempered with humor, which saved the story from sentimentality. I also liked the period music added to the soundtrack. I hope this film can be distributed more widely--and wish that someone would put the letters into book form.
