The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
Best Teen Angst Movie in Ages
Great cast lead by the radiant Hailee Steinfeld as a high school junior navigating school, feeling like the odd ball out, dealing with an unstable mother after the death of her father and the unsure road to adulthood through interactions with classmates, boys and deceptively caring teachers. Nadine's quirky personality can be off putting but she is relatable. Even with the teen angst the film is hopeful, humorous, personal and full of heart. It is a rare, touching, yet liberating look at growing up and the much too real landmines one has to navigate to enter adulthood. Solid performances by Harrelson, Sedgwick and Blake Jenner. A new teen classic! Best indie I've seen in Ages!
The Game (2006)
Waste of time and talent
Admittedly I only watched part of this series online. I saw Momoa had appeared in the series and I enjoy his work so I found his episodes and watched only them. The stories and performances were stiff and uninspired and fell flat. Writing unimpressive. Talent was wasted. How a show can stifle the natural magnetism, goofiness and accessible, at times tangible vulnerability of Momoa I will never understand. Baywatch (not exactly known for it's deep content) did a better job of using his talents! Disappointing.
Debug (2014)
Odd Movie
David Hewlett's avant-garde space age concept movie is a bit odd. Not my normal cup of tea but I watched it all the way through. High point for me was Momoa's mesmerizing appearance as a devilish, male version of a temptress. Between Momoa's magnetism and the character's hypnotic appeal the girl didn't have a chance. 5 stars for Hewlett's imagination. 6 stars for Momoa's seductive performance.
The Red Road (2014)
The Red Road
LOVED this show! I applaud Sundance for bringing it to us but detest how they screwed it and us over by handling this gem so poorly. Ever heard of supporting and advertising a quality show?! They had the guts to try the series but not enough balls to support it!!Extremely disappointed that because of Sundance there aren't more episodes! The Red Road had superb acting, great story- so much going for it. Some of Jason Momoa's best work to date!! He brought layers of depth to Phillip Kopus that made the audience root for him even when he was doing bad things! Within The Red Road was the whole gray area between good and bad and what motivates people and the mental and emotional anguish...Great work by the principals and supporting characters. It had action but was about people and relationships, actions and consequences and the ugly way people can treat one another. It was intriguing and captivating. You've got an incredible cast including Martin Henderson,Julianne Nicholson,Tamara Tunie,Mike Farrell and Tom Sizemore bringing compelling characters to life. I recommend this show to people all the time!
Frontier (2016)
Frontier Season 1
Thoroughly enjoyed this mini-series. Momoa is delightful as "crazy savage" Declan Harp! He shows range and emotional vulnerability when he isn't taking out enemies with his knives and tomahawks. Didn't know what to expect from the story and was surprised to find out this type of thing was happening in Canada back in the 1700s. While there are arguments for lack of depth in the story line, I'd remind everyone that there is a lot of story to tell in 6, forty-something minute installments- details get lost and ideas must be combined. Really like the characters portrayed by Zoe Boyle (Strong interesting main character), Jessica Matten (strong sidekick could morph to a main character), and Tantoo Cardinal(loved her on Dr Quinn and hear as strong leader). Evil Lord Benton desperately needs to be brought to justice...perhaps he can get a taste of his own medicine!Would love to see him get what he dished out to his captives. Captain Chesterfield is a watchable bad guy that makes you wonder if he will continue to be bad or ultimately do something to redeem himself. Decent story, good action, nice scenery.Overall, an enjoyable watch that rests comfortably on Momoa's strong shoulders with a powerful assist by Zoe Boyle. Looking forward to the second season.
