Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
Prob best new show this year
Not a lol player, have played... not a fan.
That doesn't matter. This show was superb nevertheless. Excellent story telling, the pace is great, stunning visuals & art, top tier voice acting... this is what turns the tide showing that video game adaptations CAN be done well and not suck.
Looking forward to season 2!
Home (2015)
Ok, but below average. Kid will prob only watch once
It's bright, the animation is smooth, my kid enjoyed it but it is missing that "something". Ya know, the special something that most disney movies have. Dreamworks found that magic with how to train your dragon 1&2 but have not quite been able to recapture it.
The thing that sticks out the most is the music. I get it rihanna is the voice of the main character so of course a song will be in there. I was thinking the end credits maybe or one song in the movie. Nope, every 20 minutes is a song and it lasts too long. It feels very shoehorned into the movie and out of place often. Like or hate her music, it doesn't fit with the feeling or setting of the movie. If they had her do music made for the movie it could have worked, but they just play her radio music during the movie for long stretches at a time. The rock is not a good singer, but having him sing in Moana worked because the song was made to fit the movie, this is just taking a radio so g and shoving it into the film. My kid who dances along to all the animated Disney musicals didn't budge during the music sections even when the movie literally tells you to dance for the music. It truly was immersion shattering and really damaged what could have been an otherwise good movie.
As a voice actress, rihanna did pretty well actually. Not stunning but I was actually pleasantly surprised. J-lo did very well playing the mother too which was another pleasant surprise.
The lessons and story are a little shallow and very predictable. There isn't much here for teens + and is clearly a kids movie.
I think part of what makes the Disney movies so successful (and how to train your dragon for dreamworks) is they aren't afraid to address serious or adult themes. This doesn't really have any, it's more about what makes a friend, and not giving up.
I give it a 4 because the kid did enjoy the bright colors and some fun animation, but I didn't get the vibe from her that it is going to be a movie she requests multiple times (unlike Moana which is basically on loop, and I'm totally on with that). As an adult watching with your kid, you aren't going to find yourself entertained or moved as if you were watching a Pixar movie or something. Mix that with the very forced in rihanna tracks and it just makes for a sub par experience.
Not a totally terrible dumpster fire of a movie, but below average for sure.
Baby Shark & More Kids Songs: Super Simple Songs (2017)
Who votes this down
For real. Its exactly what you think it is. Super simple songs for kids.
The Legend of Korra (2012)
This is how you make a strong woman character
I'm new to the Avatar universE and started watching this with my daughter before the original series, and I love this show (3/4 seasons watched so far).
The writers know how to make a strong female lead that you come to care about without it coming off as some sort of pc lecture of men bad girls good. The supporting characters are likewise well written and have dynamic story arcs and character development.
The stories are fun, the universe is interesting, and as one who enjoys japanese anime this show did a nice job of capturing the character development and story crafting that makes that medium so great. I was truly surprised as I originally clicked this thinking it was just a kids show my kiddo might enjoy, but I ended up getting sucked in too.
On more of a surface level, the art and animation is very attractive And well done, and there are some absolutely awesome fight scenes later on in the series.
Looking forward to going to the original series after we finish this one.
Dragon's Dogma (2020)
Art is good, Animation is atrocious
The obviously took some shortcuts in the animation, it is pretty horrific to watch which is unfortunate since the background art and scenery is great. Only watched the first episode, seemed like it might be interesting enough to watch... but just can't get past the animation. :/
Absurd Planet (2020)
Cringefest narration
The beautiful high res footage is fantastic (hence score of 3 and not 1) but this is totally ruined by the cringiest narration. Tries to do the dad joke thing, but the narrator cannot pull it off and it is absolutely eye-rolling. We chuckled at the guy pretending to be david attenborough at the very beginning, but that lasted only a minute. Then mother nature started talking and it is so cringe we couldn't handle it. We typically give a new show a fair shake at least watching a full episode or two, but we couldn't even take another monute of this dumpster-fire of a show. Waste of footage, hopefully nat geo or bbc can get rights to it and make a proper show with it.
Into the Dark: Treehouse (2019)
Woke movie could have been interesting but...
They managed to cram "me too" "wage gap" and "patriarchy" down my throat so hard it hurts. If they didn't try so hard I could have gotten into it a little.
Future Man (2017)
Some of the episodes i couldnt stop laughing
It's vulgar, it's funny, and it has nerdy references. At first inwas like 'its ok...' by episode 8 or ao i couldnt atop laughing. Highly recommend if you arent thin skinned
Growing Up Wild (2016)
Amazing footage, not a fan of Narrator
The shots are great, definitely worth a watch. Not the best narrator voice though.
Beautiful People (2014)
Written by a fifth grader, filmed by a freshman
Even for a movie entitled "dead house" this was worse than expected. I went into this expecting a b-rate typical zombie movie... but this. The very first scene I was like, hmm ok, this movie os going for the twisted thing, this could be fun ala hostel, but that quickly dissipates. Most of the movie is dialogue of one of the bad guys forcing families to say/do things. While gritty at first this gets boring after 20 minutes. The lead-up to the zombies is idiotic. There are SOOO MANY PLOT HOLES in this movie! It feels like it was written by a fifth grader and shot by a couple freshman in college film class for a project over the weekend.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Didnt see in theatre out of protest...my mistake
As title says, after the last jedi, this latest installment did not appeal to me at all. Wathing on Netflix I was pleasantly surprised to find this a fun, exciting and charasmatic action show inside the sw universe. When the franchise doesnt try to force a square peg in a round hole it works for some great fun!
2036 Origin Unknown (2018)
Not so bad if you pay attention
Addressing the myriad of bad reviews that seem to be an over reaction:
Its a dialogue movie so if you are looking for action that is not what this even tries to be.
If you pay attention it is not hard to follow... but you do have to pay attention.
Sure it could have had over the top special effects but I dont think this had the budget of a movie like Interstellar. Some of the themes are rehashed sci-fi movies blended together which comes of as nt that original but still a solid and enjoyable experience.
Tomb Raider (2018)
A fun basic action/adventure movie, a great video game adaptation
If you changed the title it would be a basic summer action flick, not going to win awards but its good enough to have some enjoyment.
If you thought this was going to be an award winning thought provoking movie, that's on you. I came in expecting the worst since video game to movie adaptations generally are rotten but i came out very pleasantly surprised.
Lost in Space (2018)
Looks nice, but....
As many have said, for a tv show it looks nice. The sfx are decent, the sets are pretty, costumes look good... but the story. Yeah, some absolutely crazy stuff is going on here. Not "crazy enough it just might work" just plain "yeah right, whatever" crazy. And they wayyyyy overdid some of the chatacters.
