The Bear (2022)
Just a slow burn like the best meal
Coming from a restaurant & dysfunctional alcoholic family myself this show was so meaningful on many levels. Rich in character development, in all the detail of the cooking scenes & just the all round kookiness of living with alcoholic dysfunction it just delivered. Often it was chaotic, you don't understand the conversations, the lingo, it was confusing trying to work out the relationships but then with flashbacks it all gets filled in .. and how! Sometimes I felt frustrated with the characters being slow being confusing being annoying .. then you have a whole episode set in Copenhagen making deserts & talking (with an epic actor) about cooking & family & irs sublime. Simply one of the best shows on tv.
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021)
Thought provoking
What would you do if you lived a day over & over? Philosophical questions about life, love & death. Really enjoyed this film
Doc Martin: Midwife Crisis (2009)
Dismissive of midwifery and offensive
I normally love doc Martin but this episode rankled
It was offensive and patronising about women's choices in childbirth and towards women centred midwifery
Grow up writers!
Most midwives are highly skilled and this was an immature look at childbirth
After the Wedding (2019)
Excellent remake
This movie is an emotional journey with a twist. The acting is superb from all the actors especially Julianne Moore & Michelle Williams. Michelle played the role with a poise and inner peace that seems to cone from the characters many years & meditation in India. A poignant movie about adoption, death, life, poverty, wealth, love and fate. It's an exploration of what happens despite or because of our choices. One of the final scenes with Julianne Moore is heartbreaking. I loved it. It's a thought provoking and understated movie. Recommended.
