Witness (1985)
Multiple theme
Rachel who has lost his husband and his son, Samuel plan to go to village where their relative live. However, Samuel observes murder at the station on the way. John Book who is the detective in charge of the murder case brings the mother and the child to a police station. Samuel sees a newspaper clipping there and he notices that one of the murderers is o detective in the police station. John Book is informed on it and he faces up to make a stand against their army to solve the case. I think that this film involves not only suspense but also the theme of romance, because John Book and Rachel are in love each other. Most film has double theme like suspense and romance in John Book. So I believe that we should watch movie from multiple angles to find the deep theme in that film.
Room (2015)
Based on a true incident
This film is based on a true incident in 2008. Jack, five years old, long hair lives in "room" with her mother. They live to cook, clean the room and do physical exercises from day to day. Things in the room are all the world for Jack. Jack thinks what happens on the TV is fancy. Sometimes a strange man comes into the room and leaves some foods. One day his mother, Joy tells Jack the truth. There is a real world outside this room. Jack gets confused, but Joy attempts to escape from the room
I think that the real thrill of this film starts since Jack and Joy has get away from the room. How can they accept outside world? How can they get used to live outside world? This theme is so big, principal and deep in this film.
Rain Man (1988)
Bond of brothers
This film is a family love story between brothers. Charlie, a dealer of luxury cars is not getting the results he wants. One day Charlie hears of his father's death. His father has left his family when Charlie has been 16years old and they have broken off their relations. Charlie goes to home to get estate, but he learns that Raymond, his elder brother and having autism inherits most estate. Charlie attempts to take Raymond from home, but he finds his brother's talent and reminds memories of his childhood. At first we might think that this movie's theme is money, because Charlie desires his father's estate and behaves inhumanly to get it. However, in the end of the movie we find this film shows us the strong bond of brothers. Charlie gets a chance to change himself by meeting Raymond again. So this is a road movie of Charlie.
Fish Out of Water (2009)
a sense of precept
My first impression for this film was boring, because I thought this film describes one man's commutation of unvarying routine by rowboat. However, after watching this film I found this is so funny film. An ordinary salaried man brings his oars to commute every day. He has to cross a sea from his island. After crossing the sea a woman who is fishing waits him. They look at each other and smile. One day, a strange but beautiful career woman waits the man a side of the seashore. The man puts her on his boat and rows lightheartedly. The fishing woman's face betrays a mixture of emotions. Next day however, a fat man waits the salaried man with that career woman. And another person who wants to ride the man's boat increase day by day. The man becomes disgusted and the end of the film is so shocking! I find this film tells us the importance of modesty and a hint that how should we get out of pinches.
Paperman (2012)
One of the famous short film
I think this film is one of the most famous short film of Disney. This film had a great response on the Internet, and I watched this a number of times. The main character of this film is an extremely ordinary salaried worker. One day he comes across a career woman at the station. They part immediately, but the man doesn't forget that woman. He becomes disgusted with his assignment at his office, but he finds that woman who is in the building in front of the man's office by chance. So he attempts to throw paper planes to let the woman notice. However, it doesn't go as he hopes. The end of the film is so romantic. I think PIXAR's film are just fancy and unrealistic. But most of them have the ability to heal and give a dream for audience like "Paper man". So I suppose to they become popular from adults to children.
The Lunch Date (1989)
Heartwarming
At first I thought this film is strange and felt fear of what will happen next, because the screen is black and white and there is little conversation. However, this film is heartwarming story of ties of people who are not related. The main character is middle age woman who wants to go to somewhere by train. She misses the train she has been supposed to. The woman is puzzled and enters the restaurant near the station. She orders salad, puts it on the table and returns to take a fork to eat salad. During this time she is frowning. However, when she goes back to her seat a strange black man eats her salad. She tries to stop him, but he continues to eat it. You might feel strange just hearing this story, but the end of this film is so amused and peaceful. If you will be in a melancholy, please watch this!
Lifted (2006)
Complication and resolution
This film is one of works of PIXAR by Disney. I thought this is science-fiction movie at first, because UFO appears in farmland. However, in fact this is a heartwarming story of an alien. One night a farmer's room becomes veiled in blue light. A farmer is sleeping. His body floats in midair and goes to window. He seems to be kidnapped. However, his head hits a wall. A small green alien tries to move the farmer by control board. He bashes the farmer's body against the wall or the ceiling or the floor by mistake. The big green alien who is the small green alien's boss stares at his manipulation. The small alien can't manage it, but he regains confidence in the end. I think this movie is merger between complication and resolution. The small alien fails many times on route, but he recover his confidence the end of the movie. So this film is the most important work of complication and resolution.
Blow Out (1981)
Good film!
At first I thought this film was just the rule of right hero story, because Jack tries to rescue Sally from invisible evil and the screen and story is brighter than other movies which we watched already. However, after watching this movie I feel this film has something in common with films which we has watched till now. In concrete there are two points. The first point is Hitchcock's film("Vertigo", "Psycho", "Conversation" and "Blow out" ) have one of the theme of beauty of women's death. Every film has scene which a woman is killed or depiction of murder. I think it is transiency of beautiful woman's life. Also, it shows the idea of women as possession. That reason is that sometimes women are considered that their position or status is lower than men. This is so strange for me. The second point is the guilty that main character feels in each film. In "Vertigo" and "Conversation" it is connected to religious thinking. This is thinkable that the director Hitchcock has been Christian and he has been affected. In everyday life there is a possibility people get guilty, so I think Hitchcock and other director who was influenced by him wanted to show that.
The Conversation (1974)
Multiple theme
This film started to depict usual park. It was so funny day. There were some couples, parents and children and performers. But one couple was tapped by some men. I thought this couple was just main character in this film, because they looked victim indeed and this seemed to center around this couple. So I had no idea about Harry Caul who was the real main character and the incident waiting for him at first. I think this film has multiple theme. One of the theme is the fear of surveillance. We go several places and live in everyday life. There are some surveillance camera everywhere of town. Then, does one might say that our privacy is protected? The answer is no. Our privacy is infringed unconsciously. This film might want to say about that.
The Birds (1963)
Consistency of Hitchcock's film
At first, this film didn't give me any shock, because characters merely talked each other and their speaking and subtitles speed was so fast that I couldn't understand substance in places. However, the scene suddenly began to change from halfway. A large number and many kinds of birds attacked on people. I think this film is a little different from other horror films, because even if some ghosts often appear, we might guess their mind by their background. However, in this film, the birds don't speak anything so we don't be able to find the reason why the birds attack people to the end. (But possibly, it'll be revenge on human or demand of releasing lovebird.) So this point is weirdness and frightens us. One of the theme of this film is change of relationship between Melanie and Lydia. Lydia felt suspicion about Melanie, because Lydia had strange feeling for his son. In this point incest like "Psycho" was described in "The Birds". I think there's consistency of theme of women in Hitchcock's film.
Psycho (1960)
Terrible love
I have met this movie for the first time. I felt that this movie was the kind of horror all the time, because in a play the multiple murder were repeated and the fact of matter wasn't shown at the end. Moreover, the sound track gave us the feeling of impatience and tension.
I think that "Psycho" and "Vertigo" have something in common with women. In "Vertigo" Scottie tried to appropriate Madeline for his personal use by making ideal woman. Whereas in "Psycho" there is the description comparing women to stuffed birds from Norman's lines. I felt that these express the men's will wanting to make women their own. I wonder if women are passive compared with men is really the case.
Also, this film shows strange relationship of gender, because Norman and his mother have the reference of incest in Norman's brain. Of course mother and son are not lover but family by thinking about blood relationship from commonsense. So the love of between parent and child is "abnormal". That unusual love invaded Norman's spirit and ate in his heart. That sounds like so terrible.
Vertigo (1958)
Deep theme
I have met this movie for the first time. To be honest, I expected this film was kind of horror at the opening, because the screen was so dark, and the sound was terrible. However, in fact, this film shows much deeper thing! I think one of major theme of this film is feminism. I was so surprised to have put a foreshadowing of phallus: stick and the Coit tower. Also Scottie made Judy like Madeline. This description shows power or freedom of men. I intend that "Vertigo" has accelerated feminism movement later. Then still now, we should have a think about states of women with comparison to men. Actually, I couldn't bring myself to this movie. Because the climax rapidly developed and I couldn't understand this film perfectly. Certainly Judy cheated Scottie and she committed serious crime, but she regretted her sin and she looked to be self -examination. So I was so shocked at the end.
The Crush (2010)
Pure affection of one boy
This film is a didactic story of a little boy. This film involves a very tense scene, but ends as happy. A elementary boy falls in love with his school teacher and wants to get married. One day, however, he runs into the teacher and her fiancée during shopping with his mother. The boy learns intuitively the man is bad guy. Another day, he challenges the guy to a duel in order to protect the teacher and the guy accepts the challenge in the fool. At that night, the boy observes his father hides a gun in his closet. In that day, the guy doesn't bring his gun. And the boy levels the gun at the guy to make him confess. The end of the film is amazing!! This film shows us the pure sense of justice of a boy and his affection for his teacher. He looks like a hero and his attitude might impress many people.
Section 44 (2008)
A short comedy film
At first this film seems like a serious or suspense movie. However, after a while, you can find that this is a short comedy. You might not be able to anticipate the end of the film for a minute. A man who is the main character appears in this film. He is suddenly kidnapped at the beginning. He is put into the pitch-dark room and sits face to face with a man who is in a suit. The main character is lighted up and carried out an inquiry. He has no personal knowledge of anything and pleads his innocence. At last he shouts his friend's sin and the ending is anticlimax. This film is a mere comedy. There is no deep theme for a few minutes. The main character's attitude is so funny for audience. How can we find the meaning from this film?
Whacked (1998)
Shocking film in a sense
The beginning of this film is so shocking, because many pedestrians in downtown area fall one after another. Why do they fall suddenly? Is that sniping? Or virus? You can find the answer in the end of the film. A man works as a staff of golf course. He is so stressed out by his work, because he gets tired of picking up golf balls and, of his unchanging life. So he tries to take revenge on society. He goes out the roof of the office building and does something unexpected. Acutually, this film is a comedy film. However, you might think the genre of this film is suspense or horror by only reading the log line. This film fails to come up to our expectations in a sense. Also, this film point out the mistake that. We are biased too much when we watch movies. So I think we should watch movies from every angle in our life time.
Head Over Heels (2012)
The bonds of marital affection
This story is that an elderly couple restore the bonds of marital affection. The setting of this film is a little strange, because the couple lives upside down in a house. We can't know the reason why they live like that. The husband walks on the floor and his wife walks on the ceiling. Their house flies in the air and it goes up and down by turns. At the beginning, the couple quarrel about trifles. Their life quite looks inconvenient and it irritates them. One day the husband finds old shoes which his wife worn on their wedding day. He tries to mend and give to her. A good point of this film is how the couple reconcile and how they deepen their ties in a strange situation. I think this film shows us the importance of love and the weight of our connection whatever the circumstances.
Tootsie (1982)
Being true to myself
This film is a comedy about an odd actor who appears as a main character. However, another theme of this film is the development of the actor as a person. He can't become famous as an actor, because he makes too much fuss about acting. So he is held in deep antipathy by some companies. However, he becomes famous as an actress by chance. Then, he meets a popular actress - Julie, and they make friends. In this film Michel notices true love by performing as a woman. At the beginning he has everything his way, but he changes in mental state when he meets Julie. Also, Michel lets Julie be true to herself. So I think this film seems like a comedy apparently, but there is a deeper theme than we expected.
Porcelain Unicorn (2010)
A real love for someone
This story is a moving story during World War Ⅱ. The film is constructed by only six phrases. It is surprising that three to four minutes screen time is made by limited words. An elderly man holds a box in front of an apartment. Then he remember the past under Nazi occupation. The boy - the elderly man's childhood - and his friends explores the collapsing building. There is no wonderful thing, but he finds a noise from a shelf. His friends go away and he tries to check inside of the shelf. Inside of the shelf is like a cave and there is a little girl. She holds an unicorn doll and there is a yellow star on the arm. Suddenly, some Nazi soldiers enter the apartment and the boy sets the girl free. The last scene of this film gives us a great impression and a sense of security. I feel a real love for someone comes through some hardship.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Happiness of family
This film is a family drama centered on an event in Kamakura. The main character, David who is English preschool teacher and Keiko who is David's wife are suffering from that they haven't had a baby, and harassment of their neighbor Mrs. Yamada. One day, a boy comes to them by chance. Their life looks happy apparently, but this film shows emotional turmoil of David and Keiko at the climax scene. This film tells us what the real happiness of family is. The sadness of loneliness in family blinds what the reality is or what the real happiness like David once in a while. However, David finds the best happiness of them and affection of his wife in this film. So, you can get a clue to your way of life in the end of the film.
Father and Daughter (2000)
whether real or dream
A father and his daughter appears in this film. They rides on the bike. One day a father goes somewhere leaving his bicycle and his daughter. We don't know where he goes and why he goes. Four seasons and a few years have passed since the daughter began to wait for her father. She looks at sea which her father has left and waits he'll come back. You might think the last scene is beyond imagination. We don't know it's the dream or real in the end. We take delight of result in this film, but also sorrow of uncleanness real and dream.
