Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
Totally enjoyable!
My film critic son went with me to see PPZ, the day Deadpool opened! And yes we will be seeing Deadpool soon enough. He totally enjoyed PPZ - why: because it's a mix of action, horror, humor and romance.
Now the movie doesn't follow the book faithfully, but given that there like 6/7 different versions of P&P it's OK and yes I read the book - the book rocks by the way.
No the movie starts with Darcy arriving at a home investigating that someone is affected with the living dead virus. Mr. Darcy is admirably played by Sam Riley, his voice, continence is what you would expect from a male who has been fighting zombies for most of his life.
Lily James as Elizabeth - in the book she is the perfect warrior, when Darcy insults her at the Meryaton Ball she draws her knife out to slit his throat - after all it is a matter of honor - not so in the movie, she goes outside and weeps, just a little, but her warrior skills are very good as are her sisters.
Bella Heathcote as Jane - the way she looks in the movie, well she could be Heather Grahams little sister and as the character Jane, she is a wonderful sweet older sister for Elizabeth, who knows how to dispatch zombies quite effectively.
Another reviewer commented how good the movie is and I quite agree, if you want to see an entertaining movie with a smashing performance by Matt Smith as Mr. Collins (Dr. Who) after you see what movie you want - see this one. The audience was laughing, cringing and I even jumped a couple of points, that's how well done the movie was done - yes there are zombies that are as gory as one can imagine.
And I should mention Jack Huston as Mr. Wickham - what a villain - no spoiler of him - you will have to see for yourself.
Stay for the movie credits - it is quite an ending!
What makes a good movie? When your critic film son is talking bout the characters the two hours afterwards - you know that it was an enjoyable experience for you both!
Death Comes to Pemberley (2013)
If you read the book...........
you would know who Captain Denny's murderer is and why Denny was extremely angry with Wickham. You would know that the story came to a satisfying end; and there was never an estrangement between Darcy and Elizabeth; that they have two sons - Fitzwilliam and Charles; or that Mrs. Bennet never arrives at Pemberley being her idiot self, and finally you have the pleasure of reading about the Gardiners and their home on Gracechurch Street. In the book - Hardcastle never discovers the real reason Wickham was in Pemberley grounds, he never learned about Wickham's affair with Louisa Bidwell because he doesn't care - that is who his character.
Death Comes to Pemberley was PD James tribute to Jane Austen and reads extremely well - finished it in about 3 hours because PD James knows how to tell a story, keeps you engaged and I have to say she skillfully continued the Pride and Prejudice story that was about 8 years after Darcy and Elizabeth marry.
But alas, the PBS series made a hash of an excellent book and created something that doesn't fit the characters we know and love from Pride and Prejudice. I wonder if it was done all for an assumed need to modernize? The only reason I'm not trashing the entire series is well the acting isn't bad for what is it - otherwise if you want to enjoy an awesome tribute to Jane Austen - I highly recommend the book.
Must Love Dogs (2005)
Tired of gay endorsement
a good story with an excellent cast and it could have been great without the following. why does this movie have and endorse a gay couple to make the movie politically correct? not only do we have the typical male model and dork gay couple, but we have the heroine endorsing the gay relationship as perfect, "i wish i had the relationship you and whatever name his has." when can a romantic comedy be just that without endorsement of homosexuality? lately every romantic comedy has this endorsement "monster in law" comes to mind; and quite frankly i don't care if people take offense at my comment it's my opinion and i'm entitled to it just as anyone else is to theirs. as a result of this endorsement i can only rate the movie a 5 as a waste of time and talent. rent the DVD at your own risk.
