A Fun Story About a Story
16 March 2022
Though at times it's a bit cheesy, it's a fun mashup of ballet and anime. Nothing terribly deep or life changing. Just magical storytelling that allows you to get lost for a while. Some wonderful characters too. Now, I'd love to see a mashup of Cirque du Soleil music and storytelling, and anime as a second season.

I'm starting to regret watching it
2 February 2022
I first watched it New Year's Eve 2021 while visiting family, and liked it. It was cute.

It was late though, and I felt like some things were missed. I'm a sucker for details and animation. So I watched it again at home. Then again... and again... There was always something new in the background. A growing amazement at the dance sequences and the subtlety of expression and movement. Took a couple times to better know all the characters, being a fast paced movie. Then again, it always takes a couple times at least when meeting a new family.

Above all, the songs and their sequences have been stuck in my head for over a month now. They will not leave. The worst is when trying to sleep. Please make it stop!! Very few films have achieved that level of impact and annoyance for me. Ones that I want to keep watching again and again. This one took me by surprise big time.

It is brilliantly animated, casted, written, and torturously soundtracked with ear worms. It also needs a sequel. Mostly, it has stuck with me completely unexpectedly, which is a 10 in my book.

It's like rediscovering anew something familiar
23 July 2021
I remember watching the original on CN's Toonami after school. Found this version on Netflix recently, and was a little confused if it was a sequel or some reboot, as it's been some 20+ years. The biggest let down I have of it so far, is it needs the original song. The characters appear much older than described too (not uncommon with anime's though). There are a lot of story problems, but that's not really the intent of the show though. It's meant to be fun and uplifting, especially for young girls.

After all the madness and politics of recent years, a cheesy nostalgic series is extremely welcoming. Usually, I'm not a fan of updating animation/film, but this one seems like it benefits from the newer technology. The heart and substance is still there. Got me binge watching anyways, and in a happy place. It's new, but feels like childhood.

Makes me cry

I don't cry for movies, except this one. It'll hit you where you don't expect it to.

Surprising
4 December 2020
I wasn't sure what to make of it at first. A late night choice. It was a strange concept of undersea people, and an undersea town, but the story works very well. More so, the character development is some of the best I've seen in a long while. Keeps you guessing too, which is refreshing with so many shows becoming formulaic. Planned to only watch a couple episodes, and was surprised how quickly scenes became memorable. A little sad to see it's a limited series.

Excellent film
19 January 2020
There's controversy for those looking for it. Many of the negative reviews I read, I feel, didn't watch the movie. Or, were expecting something else. However, the ending quote sums It up. Its an emotional rollercoaster of ups, downs, uncertainty, uncomfortableness, and clarity. The artistic elements create a surreal, dreamlike quality; reminding the viewer that it's about a child and his perception of the world. It shifts as he grows. There's many Story interpretations, which to me make it brilliant. Along with the theme of balancing tragedy with comedy, it's really a story of the unsung hero's of WWII, and life. The brave cunning rabbits that make it through the dark times and ultimately win.

Holy Wow
20 September 2019
Well, I wasn't in a rush to start this series. Been years since I'd seen the film, and remembered it being rather creepy; granted I love Brian Froud's illustrations, and Jim Henson puppetry. I'd intended to only watch one or two episodes, but couldn't stop. Finally had to call it a night, and have spent the whole day looking forward to finishing the last two episodes of the season; and the original film.

The only critique I have is at times the expressions are stiff, and remind you that they're puppets. However, the vast majority of the time it's forgotten entirely; as you're just entranced by the story. And the environments/sets are stunning! In a time of easy remakes (lookin' at you Disney), this brings back so much fresh creativity in storytelling, and cinematography. So much so, I'd forgotten how much I'd missed it.
