Sunnyside (2019)
Silly but funny once you get used to it.
I'm glad I gave this show another chance after not getting/not liking the pilot that much. I feel like it has been getting better every week and the 8/10 reflects the strength of the 4th episode as well as the work of Kal Penn and many of the supporting cast ("the twins," for example, can be a bit annoying, but more often then not I laugh at loud at how ridiculous they are).
It feels like this show might be starting to hit its stride, but it currently has a 4.6/10 rating. It is sad that networks are so quick to cancel quirky shows that don't find their audience right away.
The Unicorn (2019)
Nope
I do not know a widower who was emotionally prepared to date a year after their wife's death.
The premise of this show is cruel and insensitive to people who have gone through loss.
I thought the cast looked amazing until I heard the plot. Then, just from the trailers, it was clear that the writing was poor.
What a waste of everyone's time
Big Mouth (2017)
Please keep renewing this show.
This is laugh-out-loud funny and I never say that. Sometimes I'm grossed out, but I'm always laughing.
Parents - don't watch it with your kids.
Kids - don't watch it with your parent
Maron (2013)
Wish there were more seasons.
What a great show.
Marc Maron is one of the funniest comedians we have.
I would have watched a whole lot more of this show.
The Simpsons (1989)
Still my favourite show.
I hate it that people who grew up with (and loved) The Simpsons have stopped watching it. You can't say that the quality has gone downhill if you aren't watching it.
The early Simpsons seasons, yes, were amazing. They were iconic and they were a big part of our childhood. If you compare new episodes to what the Simpsons meant to you in the 90s, then of course it is not going to hold a candle to that. The Simpsons was ground breaking and made a huge impression on my generation (and a whole lot of other people). Are the new seasons as good as classic seasons? I wouldn't say that, but I also would argue that it is not fair to compare them.
New Simpsons episodes are for the most part good. In the range between B and A/A+
They are not the same as classic Simpsons and they are not all consistently the same quality, but I look forward to it every week and it rarely disappoints.
It is comfort food TV. It had been on for most of my life and has been a constant staple. In my opinion, still the best show on television.
Stumptown (2019)
Very Solid.
I think this is my favourite new show in the Fall 2019 season. The main cast is amazing, the supporting cast is really good, the writing is crisp, the characters are nuanced (i'm going to track down the graphic novels it is based on).
Also, Jake Johnson. One of my favourite actors. His performance is always low-key and spot on.
This Is Where I Leave You (2014)
A 6.6 rating?! Oh my goodness.... Why?
This movie is really good. It just is. Adam Driver and Tina Fey... I mean, c'mon.
It is based on a really, really good book. Maybe read that first? But then definitely give this movie a shot.
Land of the Lost (2009)
My guilty pleasure.
I'll admit that this is my guilty pleasure movie. I don't know if it is good. It might actually be kind of bad? But it makes me laugh.
Also, "Chuck" from Pushing Up Daisies is in it
Life in Pieces (2015)
Cancelled? Noooooooooo
I can't believe this show got cancelled. It had at least one more good season in it.
It was strong from beginning to end. Reliably funny and one of the best casts on television.
The West Wing (1999)
My favourite (drama category) TV show of all time.
The Simpsons wins the award for my favourite show of all time, but The West Wing is my favourite drama.
Worth investing the hours to watch it from beginning to end.
Sports Night (1998)
Aaron Sorkin! How do so few people know about this show?
This show is a hidden gem. It was amazing for its time and has held up for the most part. Definitely worth watching.
Incredible cast.
Trophy Wife (2013)
Underrated.
Bradley Whitford. Need I say more?
This show was so underrated. I wish we'd gotten a few more seasons. It wasn't perfect, but the supporting cast was amazing.
The Mindy Project (2012)
The. Best. Sitcom.
I mean, what else is there to say? It was a Perfect romantic comedy delivered to your living room weekly by an incredibly talented writer and actress (and, of course, the writers, crew, and cast).
Amazing guest stars. Sharp writing. I miss watching a new episode every week.
That '70s Show (1998)
Bland sitcom at its worst.
I'm sorry, but I just don't get this one. I watched a few episodes and tried to give it a fair shot, but not for me.
Topher Grace is a better actor that people give him credit for, but this is not worth watching (in my opinion.
Also worth mentioning that seeing Danny Masterson on screen might be triggering for a lot of people (knowing what we know now).
Still Standing (2015)
Really cool concept.
This is such a cool concept. I love the idea of focusing on one small canadian community per episode. It makes ordinary, hard-working people feel like stars for a night.
The comedy is hit or miss, but I love the concept so much that I'll definitely keep watching it.
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Rollercoasters in quality from season to season and episode to episode. Still must-see TV
Everyone says SNL used to be so much better than it is now. I love the "vintage" episodes, but I also look forward to watching the new SNL every Sunday morning (yes, I PVR it. I'm either out or asleep when it airs).
The episodes are inconsistent. Some episodes are amazing all the way through. Some episodes are just terrible. Some of the sketches make me cry laughing. Others I can only watch a minute of before I fast forward.
Definitely still must-see TV. If you gave up on it, then maybe it is time to record a few episodes and give it another shot.
Mulaney (2014)
Worse shows are on their 5+ season. Not the greatest but not awful.
John Mulaney has admitted that this show didn't work out the way he hoped.
However, he is funny enough that even his worst effort is better than a lot of syndicated sitcoms.
I gave it an 8. I'll be the first to admit that is extremely generous. I was disappointed when I watched it the first time, but I gave it a second shot after it got cancelled. High expectations are a huge reason (I think) that so many people hated this show.
I also gave it an 8 in the hopes that that will encourage someone to give John Mulaney a chance at redemption. I think he'd do a better Netflix, Amazon, or HBO one hour drama. I think maybe some combination of the NBC platform and the sitcom genre took this show down in quality.
Still, if you're a John Mulaney fan it is worth watching at least an episode to see if you like it. Don't be too put off by the low star rating.
Prodigal Son (2019)
Dark. Entertaining. A little melodramatic. Worth watching
This is my 2nd favourite show of the fall 2019 season (favourite is Stumptown).
It gets a little melodramatic at times. I've eye rolled a few times and the actor who plays the sister needs to work at bringing more authenticity to the character.
However, enjoyable to watch.
Four Weddings and a Funeral (2019)
Underrated. Well-written.
One of my favourite new shows. Well-written and clever.
