Loudermilk (2017)
Brilliant, and Canadian
This is easily one of the best tv series current or vintage.
It is funny as hell, we always have a few laugh out loud moments in every episode.
It is also extremely witty, setting up situations and watching them play out in hilarious ways.
Every episode begins with a short vignette that sets the tone for that particular episode, and they are all really funny.
Two of my favourites are the female barista, and the lumberjack time travelers. If you don't know what I'm getting at, expect a treat when you do watch them.
Great cast, fabulous writers and of course the actors presenting all of this greatness have impeccable timing and delivery.
Since other reviews have commented on the lead not being very likeable, I'll just say that he is the best part of this series, and very likeable. IMHO :)
Watch this show!
Infinite Storm (2022)
Great movie full of suspense
This was a very emotional ride for me and my wife. A few tears were spilled, especially near the end when certain things are explained.
I don't want to provide spoilers so I'll let you watch it all unfold on your own.
Back in the day I used to do a lot of cross country skiing and while never experiencing what happened on Mount Washington, I have come close to it.
On one trip I had to spend the night in a snow hut, hand built.
The reality presented in this movie brought all that back home to me.
It is a beautiful, emotional movie with a lot of sweat and tough going brought to life in a believable manner.
Highly recommended.
Calamity Jane (2024)
Amusing
Man this movie sure got blasted, and doesn't deserve it.
I thought it was an amusing way to spend some time. The leads are attractive and work well together.
It is not Academy Award material, but it is at least amusing.
Calamity herself is very likeable and I found myself rooting for her. She's very pretty too, which I do not think is an accurate representation of the real person.
But then I did not go into this movie for a history lesson.
Oh and BTW, I've been to Deadwood and the Badlands area many times. It's great for a holiday break.
But I kept remarking on the landscape, "There's no mountains in the badlands!"
It was apparently filmed near Tucson, AZ and although not representative of the Deadwood area, it is very much how Hollywood likes to represent the Old West.
Pretty good movie overall. If you're looking for something lightweight.
Man of Tai Chi (2013)
Keanu owes us all a huge debt
Keanu owes everyone involved in any meaningful way in the Internal Arts, including Taiji, a huge debt for this absurd mess of a movie.
He perpetuates, or attempts to, absurd claims about Taiji that have long been debunked.
Associating Taiji with magical abilities is absurd, flying though the air is.. absurd.
I have been working with legitimate Masters for more than 40 years and none of them have laid claim to any of these magical powers.
What does happen in Taiji, if you are consitent and properly taught, is that your physical abilities rise to 'the level of wonder'.
All explainable by physics and all repeatable, but still wondrous.
Wondrous is not magic however and that is where his debt comes from.
Come on Keanu, I like you, you seem like a man of integrity, but not with this messy bowl of BS.
You can do better, and now you owe it to us real practitioners to do that.
Make another one but stick to reality. Reality is amazing enough.
Dalíland (2022)
Excellent movie
I had no idea what to expect on viewing this movie, but I was not at all disappointed.
It was fantastic and so very well filmed.
We see little of the genius at work, instead what we have is a peek into the mind of Dali, and his followers.
The film reminds me that some people have minds that simply work differently from yours and mine.
The great geniuses see the world differently than we do. In other eras I am sure some of these geniuses would be unrecognized and cast out as insane.
And it has occurred to me that many such persons die early.
There is a price to pay for fame and genius.
Anyway, the acting was terrific, I actually felt like I was back in the 70s again in some of the scenes.
And the filming is most beautiful.
All in all a great movie that should be enjoyed by all.
The Time Capsule (2022)
Skip it
Bad writing, worse acting, just skip it and save yourself some pain.
We gave it a try, and both my wife and i agreed to give it up about a half hour in.
The characters have no charm to them, no likeability, and the writing is cheesy at best. Poorly filmed, poorly acted, just skip it.
The idea could have been good, but their apparently very limited budget did not allow any reasonable fleshing out of the story.
Good try, next time get some actors that can help you feel something for them, and some writers that can help the actors do their job better.
Come to think of it, I'm going to rewrite this entire movie and submit it to the studios. I'm sure mine will be better.
Assholes: A Theory (2019)
Great humorous documentary
This was fun and educational to watch.
To those giving it a low rating because, 'it went political', the best reply is similar to what happens when kids from small towns attend University and return home as Liberals.
No one indoctrinated them, they just learned more about how the world works, or should work, and became Liberal as a result. Educated people are more likely to be Liberal.
Same here, especially today, the Repubs have a lot more a$$holes in their ranks than do the Liberals. That's a fact. And their A$$hole in Chief is an orange a$$hole who is also a narcissist clown. Get over it.
John Cleese adds some humour, the cast is good and is pulled from the ranks of University profs and other professionals, giving this documentary the ring of truth.
So why is $$holism so much on the rise lately?
One explanation is that The Commander in Orange gave license to them all, and their fascist buddies, to crawl out from under their rocks without fear of reprisal.
Too bad for the rest of us that now have to deal with these cretins.
Great movie, very well done. A fun idea to explore.
Aline (2020)
A great enjoyable movie
Where the heck did the low ratings for this movie come from? It is fabulous.
There is humour, love, great music and some very good acting. Everything a person could want in a movie, and its a tear jerker, which I kind of like too.
I have always loved Celine's voice, but not so much her choice of songs. IMHO if her song choice was better she would have been a total rocket.
This movie lets us see and understand the inner workings of Celine in a very profound way. From her humble beginnings and the stumbling blocks she had to overcome to achieve her goals.
Also her love and marriage to her manager. When I first heard of it I admit I wondered.. quite the age gap. However if things really went the way the movie portrays them, then I'm 100% on board. Love cannot be dictated.
In all this is a first rate movie, ignore the haters and their whining about trivialities, this is a movie that should not be missed.
Old Henry (2021)
Great Western with a somewhat predictable ending,
My wife and I both were glued to the set watching this.
Usually we watch half a movie if it is so-so and then watch the second half the next day. Superb movies, like this one keep our attention enough that we don't notice the passage of time.
Good vs Bad, every good western has a battle between the two going on. This one is convoluted and keeps you guessing all the way through.
Good movie, highly recommended.
A Vigilante (2018)
Definitely an A list movie
Not hard to watch, not a Hollywood revenge movie, not a repeat of what you have seen before.
This is a brilliant take on domestic violence primarily. So well done that it feels real.
The violence seems like a lesser part of the story of how men, women and children are abused, murdered, manipulated and terrorized on a daily basis.
Acting is first rate and the story has enough twists to keep you glued to your set.
My wife and I usually take a break during regular movies, or turn them off to finish the next day. Not this one.
Highly recommended but bring some Kleenex.
The Birdcatcher (2019)
Beautifully told story about a horrible time
This is very good movie. It should be rated much higher than IMDB shows.
From the great acting, which immerses you in the time and this particular story, to the incredible camera work and scenery, this is top notch.
I highly recommend you watch this and see for yourself how good.
The characters are believable. It is told in a bit of a fanciful way at times, with flash forwards and dream like montages. Very creative and imaginative.
Finding Graceland (1998)
Great but far underrated
I have to admit that this movie made me a bit uncomfortable for a while.
Harvey Keitel does not look like Elvis at all, and sadly we all do know that The King is dead. But the characters and dialogue were great, the scenery and filming were fabulous so I watched on, and was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
This is a smart movie. Its also fun and full of music. I don't want to give too much away but suffice it to say that Elvis does not have to be actually living, to live on.
Highly rated, if you're a fan give it a go.
Scottish Mussel (2015)
Good movie, definitely worth a look
This is not high art, nor is it meant to be. Its a slightly corny, family movie with likable characters.
I enjoyed the interaction between the two leads and thought they were very compatible. The side kicks did what side kicks always do, provided comic relief and some goofiness.
The soundtrack is worth mentioning, great music throughout. I only wish there was a link to the players as I would like to buy some of this music.
